Patton. 438 pp. Part One of this study is a historical narrative that addresses the political, economic, and technological factors associated with the building of the first railroads in North Carolina, and their relationship to the railroad in Virginia. Both the Raleigh & Gaston Rail Road and the Wilmington & Raleigh Rail Road were completed in 1840. The latter did not run to Raleigh, as was the original intention when it was incorporated in 1833, but rather it terminated near the Weldon Toll Bridge on the Roanoke River where it connected to the Portsmouth & Roanoke Rail Road. The Raleigh & Gaston Rail Road, incorporated in 1835, connected to the Greensville & Roanoke Rail Road, a branch line of the Petersburg Rail Road, by its own bridge over the Roanoke approximately twelve miles west of Weldon. The two North Carolina railroads lacked the benefit of a connection that would bring them into a network. This part of the study concludes with the assessment that trade competition between the commercial centers of Norfolk and Petersburg adversely influenced early railroad development in North Carolina. Part Two of this study presents two spatial hypotheses. The first advances the position that early railroad development in North Carolina would mirror railroad development in southern Virginia to form an alignment of commercial centers north-to-south rather than east-to-west within physiographic regions. The second hypothesis suggests that the early railroads in North Carolina could have intersected north-to-south and east-to-west to form a productive network across physiographic regions. Of the many railroads proposed in North Carolina during the 1830s, the Waynesborough and Raleigh route seems the most likely component of an alternative network that would support the second hypothesis, if its practicality can be demonstrated by a plausible model. The empirical model prepared for this study replicates the conventions of a period railroad survey utilizing modern geographic tools and resources. The analysis of the resulting estimate supports the proposition that this railroad could have been built at that time had the interests in Raleigh and Wilmington agreed to one railroad to the Roanoke. The viability of other options suggests the possible that the rail network in North Carolina could have evolved differently under the same conditions. This was a particularly attractive assignment for the reason that my father, Edmund E. Burke, had frequently taken me to the facility as a child during the twilight years of its operation; and as an undergraduate in the 1970s, I had frequented the site before most of its structures had been demolished. After completing this assignment, I had a strong desire to continue the research. Under the guidance of Dr. W. Frank Ainsley of the Earth Sciences department at UNC- Wilmington, I began preparing a survey of the existing railroad-related structures and architecture along the 161½ miles of the route of the Wilmington & Weldon Railroad. Dr. Ainsley has maintained an unflagging interest in my research since that time, and I am honored the he chose to serve as the outside member of my dissertation committee. Upon entering the Historic Preservation program at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 2002, Dr. Jo Ramsay Leimenstoll encouraged me to continue my research by exploring the relationship between railroad development in Eastern North Carolina and the diffusion of stylistic innovations in domestic architecture within the rail corridor. This research served as a foundation for preparing several chapters and appendices presented here. iv In 2004, I was granted the privilege of being accepted into the Ph.D. Program in the Department of Geography at UNC-Greensboro, where I encountered a faculty that led me to expand the scope of my research to embrace the many spatial aspects of the topic. I begin by thanking my committee. Dr. Elizabeth Nelson devoted a considerable portion of her time to reviewing the maps in my dissertation, and offering her editorial skills to its final preparation. Dr. Zhi-Jun Liu introduced me to the area of GIS programming, and rekindled my interest in mathematics. Dr. Phillip Royall encouraged me to expand my inquiry into the realm of physical geography, a direction that had a profound influence upon the changing of my original research design.     THE PRICE OF BONDAGE: SLAVERY, SLAVE VALUATION, AND ECONOMICS IN THE ALBEMARLE By Jacob T. Parks April 2018 Director of Thesis: Donald H. Parkerson Major Department: History This thesis examines the economics of antebellum slavery in the Albemarle region of North Carolina. Located in the northeastern corner of the Carolina colony, the Albemarle was a harsh location for settlement and thus, inhabitants settled relatively late by Virginians moving south in search of better opportunities. This thesis finds that examination of a region’s slave economics not only conformed to, but also departed from, the larger slave experience in antebellum America. The introduction of this thesis focuses on the literature surrounding slave economics and valuation in antebellum America. After this, the main body of the thesis follows. Chapter one focuses on the various avenues slaves became property of white men and women in the Albemarle. This reveals that the county courts were intrinsically involved in allowing slave sales to occur, in addition to loop-holes slave owners utilized to retain chattel slavery cheaply. Additionally, this chapter pays special attention to slave valuation and statistical analysis. The following chapters revolve around the topics of: the miscellaneous costs associated with slavery in the Albemarle, such as healthcare, food, and clothing; insuring the lives of slaves and hiring them out for work away from their master; and examination of runaway slave rewards in statistical terms, while also creating a narrative of the enslaved and their actions. Nearly two dozen professionals and technicians are now employed at the North Carolina Underwater Archaeology Branch (N.C. UAB), the North Carolina Maritime Museum (NCMM), the Wilmington District U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (COE), and East Carolina University’s (ECU) Program in Maritime Studies. Several North Carolina companies are currently involved in conducting underwater archaeological surveys, site assessments, and excavations for environmental review purposes and a number of individuals and groups are conducting ship search and recovery operations under the UAB permit system. The results of these activities can be found in the pages that follow. They contain report references for all projects involving the location and documentation of physical remains pertaining to cultural activities within North Carolina waters. Each reference is organized by the location within which the reported investigation took place. The Bibliography is divided into two geographical sections: Region and Body of Water. The Region section encompasses studies that are non-specific and cover broad areas or areas lying outside the state's three-mile limit, for example Cape Hatteras Area. The Body of Water section contains references organized by defined geographic areas.

LEVY This flora is an enumeration of the vascular plants growing without cultivation in the Great Dismal Swamp. It is hoped that this work will be of value to the rapidly increasing number of persons visiting the swamp, particularly since the establishment of the Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge in 1973. Great pains have been taken to ensure completeness of the inventory presented here. Yet, the Dismal Swamp is difficult to botanize, and additional species will undoubtedly be added to the present list. Previous botanical work in the swamp is listed in Kirk et al. (in press). LOCATION AND EXTENT OF AREA The Great Dismal Swamp, which occupies about 104,000 ha. of North Carolina and Virginia (Figure 1), is one of the largest remaining swamp forests on the Coastal Plain. Although the swamp is considered to be centered around Lake Drummond in the Virginia cities of Suffolk and Chesapeake, it extends into the North Carolina counties of Currituck, Camden, Perquimans, Gates, and Pasquotank. Except for the western edge, which is delimited by the Suffolk Escarpment (Henry, 1970), the boundaries of the swamp are not sharply defined. TOPOGRAPHY AND DRAINAGE The Dismal Swamp is situated on a low, poorly drained flat marine terrace which ranges from 4.5 to 7 m.

This paper will deal primarily with the construction of this railroad which left Salisbury, climbed the mountains to Asheville, and continued to ter.ninal points of Paint Rock and Ducktown, on the Tennessee Line. The difficulties encountered during construction will be emphasized along with the political aspects that went along with construction. Emphasis will be placed on the time between the State's acquisition of the Railroad in 1875 and the completion to Murphy in 1891. An introductory chapter will briefly cover the start of the railroad in 1855, its role in the Civil War, and the delays in construction caused by the scandals of the Reconstruction Period. Starting with 1875, a vital element in the construction, convict labor, will be dealt with. The management of the railroad varied between state and private ownership. It suffered the financial pains that many early lines endured. Most of all, it was hindered by the ever present problem presented by nature as the track was built through so~e of the roughest terrain east of the Rocky Mountains. This was really the significant feature of the railroad because at many times its further construction seemed to be impossible. Political, financial, managerial, and labor problems testify to the trying task that was accomplished and to the desire of the people of the western part of the state to have their railroad.

Union Street Petersburg, Virginia 23803 Prepared By: Matthew Laird (Ph.D.) James River Institute for Archaeology, Inc. 223 McLaws Circle, Suite 1 Williamsburg, Virginia 23185 (757) 229-9485 September 2006 ABSTRACT Between December 2005 and April 2006, the James River Institute for Archaeology, Inc. (JRIA), conducted intensive archaeological testing of six sites within the Pocahontas Island Historic District. The objective of the testing, which focused primarily on properties owned by the City of Petersburg, was to evaluate the integrity and research potential of a representative sample of site types encompassing both the prehistoric- and historic-period occupations of Pocahontas Island. The resources examined included the archaeological components of the extant Jarratt House (44PG470) and “Underground Railroad House” (44PG471); the site of the former Richmond & Petersburg Railroad depot (44PG472); a domestic site spanning the eighteenth- through twentieth centuries in the vacant lot at 301 Rolfe Street (44PG473); the former site of the early twentieth- century Pocahontas Distilling Co. whiskey distillery at 343 Rolfe Street, which also included a nineteenth-/twentieth-century domestic component (44PG474); and one previously inventoried site (44PG5) with prehistoric Native-American and historic domestic components. In general, the investigated sites retained a high degree of physical integrity, and yielded significant concentrations of artifacts and evidence of intact cultural layers and features. Individually, the six sites retained sufficient integrity and research potential to be considered eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places under Criterion D.
