Here in southeastern New England, home of the Wampanoag Indians, many people of Native American ancestry are sorting out the pieces of their humanness. Our Indian culture and language are coming back. The proud and fiercely independent Wampanoag once walked tall and proud on this land. Within a span of 60 years, only 400 (3%) Wampanoag people survived the deadly foreign epidemics and King Philip’s War (1675- 1676). The survivors were confined to reservations, plantations & settlements within a Colonial culture and government throughout Rhode Island and Massachusetts. Then, little by little, the structure of traditional Indian culture was annihilated. The forces of disease, blood mixing, enactment of law, racist attitude, and isolation have disintegrated the looks, language and lore of the Wampanoag Indians. The essence of traditional Indian Spirituality—the Indian language—fell silent about 200 years ago on the mainland of Wampanoia. For so long many people of Indian ancestry have been burdened with shame. We have had to deny to others and ourselves that we come from an ancient civilization that survived here on Turtle Island for over 10,000 years. Very few books on our history and culture have been written by Indians themselves. Most standard academic books read like a clinical autopsy of a dead culture with big words few can understand. The Aquidneck Indian Council was founded by local Native Americans representing several Algonquian Wapanachki tribes. We were formed to produce programs and publications that tell our story and help bring back our ancient language.

    Losing the Language: The Decline of Algonquian Tongues and the Challenge of Indian Identity in Southern New England DA YID J. SIL VERMAN Princeton University In the late nineteenth century, a botanist named Edward S. Burgess visited the Indian community of Gay Head, Martha's Vineyard to interview native elders about their memories and thus "to preserve such traditions in relation to their locality." Among many colorful stories he recorded, several were about august Indians who on rare, long -since passed occasions would whisper to one another in the Massachusett language, a tongue that younger people could not interpret. Most poignant were accounts about the last minister to use Massachusett in the Gay Head Baptist Church. "While he went on preaching in Indian," Burgess was told, "there were but few of them could know what he meant. Sometimes he would preach in English. Then if he wanted to say something that was not for all to hear, he would talk to them very solemnly in the Indian tongue, and they would cry and he would cry." That so few understood what the minister said was reason enough for the tears. "He was asked why he preached in the Indian language, and he replied: 'Why to keep up my nation.' " 1 Clearly New England natives felt the decline of their ancestral lan­ guages intensely, and yet Burgess never asked how they became solely English speakers. Nor have modem scholars addressed this problem at any length. Nevertheless, investigating the process and impact of Algonquian language loss is essential for a fuller understanding Indian life during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and even beyond.

INDEX THE PEOPLE OF CAPE COD: CAPTAIN MARTIN PRING PEOPLE MENTIONED IN CAPE COD CAPE COD: It is remarkable that there is not in English any PEOPLE OF adequate or correct account of the French exploration of what is CAPE COD now the coast of New England, between 1604 and 1608, though it is conceded that they then made the first permanent European settlement on the continent of North America north of St. ÆSOP Augustine. If the lions had been the painters it would have been XENOPHANES otherwise. This omission is probably to be accounted for partly by the fact that the early edition of Champlain’s “Voyages” had CHAMPLAIN not been consulted for this purpose. This contains by far the most particular, and, I think, the most interesting chapter of what we may call the Ante-Pilgrim history of New England, extending to one hundred and sixty pages quarto; but appears to be unknown WEBSTER equally to the historian and the orator on Plymouth Rock. Bancroft BANCROFT does not mention Champlain at all among the authorities for De Monts’ expedition, nor does he say that he ever visited the coast of New England. Though he bore the title of pilot to De Monts, he was, in another sense, the leading spirit, as well as the historian of the expedition. Holmes, Hildreth, and Barry, and BARRY apparently all our historians who mention Champlain, refer to the edition of 1632, in which all the separate charts of our harbors, &c., and about one half the narrative, are omitted; for the author explored so many lands afterward that he could afford to forget a part of what he had done.

    63 A TRIPARTITE POLITICAL SYSTEM AMONG CHRISTIAN INDIANS OF EARLY MASSACHUSETTS Susan L. MacCulloch University of California, Berkeley In seventeenth century colonial Massachusetts there existed for a brief but memorable period about twenty towns of various size and success inhabited entirely by Christian Indians. These towns of converts were islands in a sea of opposing currents, for unconverted Indians scorned them, and un- trusting English opposed them. The towns and their inception is a story in itself (see Harvey [MacCulloch] 1965:M.A. thesis); but it will suffice here to note that in the established Indian towns the inhabitants dressed in English clothes, were learning or already practicing their "callings" or trades, and were earnest Puritan churchgoers. They were able to read and write in Indian (and some in English), took logic and theology courses from Rev. John Eliot in the summer, and sent their promising young men to the Indian College at Harvard. Furthermore, they had extensive farmed land, live- stock, and orchards, and participated in a market economy with the somewhat incredulous colonists. The picture, in short, was not the one usually de- scribed in grammar school history books of the red savage faced by the colonists. One of the most interesting aspects of the Praying Towns, as they were called, was their unique political system, made up of the English colonial and the traditional tribal systems; and superimposed on both of these was a biblical arrangement straight out of Moses. In order to fully appreciate this tripartite political system some background information about the native and colonial systems is helpful.

    A Day on the Thomas Laighton by David Ramsay May 24, 2021 O LORD, our Sovereign, how majestic is your name in all the earth! (Psalm 8 NRSV) During prayer in the morning, I recite one of my favorite Psalms and ending with a prayer that on our voyage out to the Isles of Shoals, we all may be inspired by His Presence, by the beauty of the ocean, the sparkling waters, the gentle sunlight and my words about history and the people that once called this lonely group of islands home. As we back out into the Piscataqua River, I offer a warm welcome and begin by orienting them to the second most rapid flowing rivers in the United States. In 1603 a young sea captain, age 23, Martin Pring came from Bristol, England to explore and exploit this river, hoping to find sassafras, then thought to be a cure for the French Pox. Not finding any, what he did discover was far more important, a vast abundance of tall White Pine trees, dearly coveted by His Majesty, the King of England, as ship masts! More stories: shipbuilding, the history of the Memorial Bridge, the origin of the lovely riverfront Prescott Park, created due to the generosity of two local schoolteachers, Josie, and Mary Prescott. And much more: The Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, several forts, lighthouses, including references to the lighthouse keepers, some quite humorous characters. As we leave the harbor, passengers have settled in and are enjoying the sea air and sun, expectant about reaching the Isles of Shoals and our tour of Star Island.

The first Europeans to interact with the indigenous people in the New Settlement Begins England area were some traders, trappers, fishermen, and Terminology explorers. But once the English merchant companies decided to The Sachem Nanepashemet establish permanent settlements in the early 17th century, Sagamore John - English Puritans who believed the land belonged to their king Wonohaquaham and held a charter from that king empowering them to colonize The Squaw Sachem began arriving to establish the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Local Tradition Sagamore George - For a short time, natives and colonists shared the land. The two Wenepoykin peoples were allies, perhaps uneasy and suspicious, but they Visits to Winchester were people who learned from and helped each other. There Memorials & Relics were kindnesses on both sides, but there were also animosities and acts of violence. Ultimately, since the English leaders wanted to take over the land, co- existence failed. Many sachems (the native leaders), including the chief of what became Winchester, deeded land to the Europeans and their people were forced to leave. Whether they understood the impact of their deeds or not, it is to the sachems of the Massachusetts Bay that Winchester owes its beginning as a colonized community and subsequent town.     Early Eastern Algonquian Language Books in the British Library Early Eastern Algonquian Language Books in the British Library Adrian S. Edwards Dispersed across the early printed book collections of the British Library, there are many important works relevant to the study of the indigenous languages of North America. This article considers materials in or about the Eastern Algonquian group of languages. These include the languages of New England first encountered by Puritan settlers from Britain in the mid-seventeenth century. The aim is to survey what can be found in the Library, and to place these items in a linguistic and historical context. Any survey has to have its limits, and this study considers only volumes printed before the middle of the nineteenth century. INDEX WAMPANOAG WAMPANOAG When the English settlements first commenced in New England, that part of its territory, which lies south of New Hampshire, was inhabited by five principal nations of Indians: the Pequots, who lived in Connecticut; the Narragansets, in Rhode Island; the Pawkunnawkuts, or Womponoags, east of the Narragansets and to the north as far as Charles river;1 the Massachusetts, north of Charles river and west of Massachusetts Bay; and the Pawtuckets, north of the Massachusetts. The boundaries and rights of these nations appear not to have been sufficiently definite to be now clearly known. They had within their jurisdiction many subordinate tribes, governed by sachems, or sagamores, subject, in some respects, to the principal sachem. At the commencement of the seventeenth century, they were able to bring into the field more than 18,000 warriors; but about the year 1612, they were visited with a pestilential disease, whose horrible ravages reduced their number to about 1800.2 Some of their villages were entirely depopulated. This great mortality was viewed by the first Pilgrims, as the accomplishment of one of the purposes of Divine Providence, by making room for the settlement of civilized man, and by preparing a peaceful asylum for the persecuted Christians of the old world.
