Collect for Stewardship Gracious God, giver of all we have and hold as stewards; grant the people of this church a deep and abiding awareness that all things come from you – our health, our incomes, our jobs, our talents and our generous impulse. Send your Holy Spirit to help us as we swim against the rising tides of materialism, envy, individualism and greed in our culture. When we are tempted to think of money as a private matter, remind us that you have asked for part of what we are given, to be returned to you as a symbol of our awareness that you give all we have. And further, help us to help each other in this grace of giving, for you are the lover of our souls and call us to nothing less than transformation in Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. • The Road Less Travelled by M.Scott Peck
INTRODUCTION The Road Less Traveled, 25th Anniversary Edition A NEW PSYCHOLOGY OF LOVE, TRADITIONAL VALUES AND SPIRITUAL GROWTH M. SCOTT PECK, M.D. A Touchstone Book Published by Simon & Schuster New York • London • Toronto • Sydney Introduction to the 25th Anniversary Edition Tomorrow a stranger will say with masterly good sense precisely what we have thought and felt all the time. —Ralph Waldo Emerson, "Self Reliance" The most common response I have received to The Road Less Traveled in letters from readers has been one of gratitude for my courage, not for saying anything new, but for writing about the kind of things they had been thinking and feeling all along, but were afraid to talk about. I am not clear about the matter of courage. A certain kind of congenital obliviousness might be a more proper term. A patient of mine during the book's early days happened to be at a cocktail party where she overheard a conversation between my mother and another elderly woman. Referring to the book, the other woman said, "You certainly must be very proud of your son, Scotty." To which my mother replied, in the sometimes tart way of the elderly, "Proud? No, not particularly. It didn't have anything to do with me. It's his mind, you see. It's a gift." I think my mother was wrong .1 saying that she had nothing to do with it, but I think she was accurate my authorship of The Road was the result of a gift—on many levels. One part of that gift goes way back.

  • THE BALLAD of the SAD CAFÉ Carson Mccullers
THE BALLAD OF THE SAD CAFÉ Carson McCullers Gothic Digital Series @ UFSC FREE FOR EDUCATION The Ballad of the Sad Café (Harper’s Bazaar, 1943) THE town itself is dreary; not much is there except the cotton mill, the two-room houses where the workers live, a few peach trees, a church with two colored windows, and a miserable main street only a hundred yards long. On Saturdays the tenants from the near-by farms come in for a day of talk and trade. Otherwise the town is lonesome, sad, and like a place that is far off and estranged from all other places in the world. The nearest train stop is Society City, and the Greyhound and White Bus Lines use the Forks Falls Road which is three miles away. The winters here are short and raw, the summers white with glare and fiery hot. If you walk along the main street on an August afternoon there is nothing whatsoever to do. The largest building, in the very center of the town, is boarded up completely and leans so far to the right that it seems bound to collapse at any minute. The house is very old. There is about it a curious, cracked look that is very puzzling until you suddenly realize that at one time, and long ago, the right side of the front porch had been painted, and part of the wall — but the painting was left unfinished and one portion of the house is darker and dingier than the other. The building looks completely deserted.

HE wonderfulcataract of Niagara, the most grand and stupendous nat- ural curiosity in the world, is annu- ally visited by so many thousands of people from the different countries of Europe and America, that a work which shall serve the purpose of a gvide to the Falls, and point out, in a plain perspicuous manner, a judicious routine of observation, so that the stranger may be enabled, by its assistance alone, to find his way without loss of time or unnecessary toil, to every place which it is desirable to visit, and every point from which a good view may be obtained, must be a denderatum to the travelling public. A work, which in addition to this, embodies a full account of this remarkable phenomenon, and the region of wild and picturesque beauty in ^hich it is situate, illustrated and embellished by accu- rate iQaps, and numerous engravings, from origi- nal and careful surveys and drawings, must pre- sent still stronger claims to popular regard, and INTRO DJJCTION, be, indeed, indispensable to the Niagara visitant.

  • The Poetics of the Erotic Gift in Early Modern Spain
Against Gracias: The Poetics of the Erotic Gift in Early Modern Spain Sarah Bogard Hollywood, California Master of Arts, Middlebury College, 2006 Bachelor of Arts, University of California, Santa Cruz, 1999 A Dissertation presented to the Graduate Faculty of the University of Virginia in Candidacy for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Spanish University of Virginia May, 2013 Alison Weber Ricardo Padron E. Michael Gerli Deborah McGrady Abstract The present study highlights literary representations of gift objects and gift exchanges, engaging the early modern discourses of love, sex, marriage, and courtship with recent scholarship on gift theory, social capital, and the novella genre in order to explore the points of tension between anxious reciprocities and unequal power relationships within the Spanish Baroque imaginary. Góngora’s Fábula de Polifemo y Galatea foregrounds how discourses of courtesy and courtliness become juxtaposed textually with notions of obligation, debt, and gratitude. In this erotic exchange, the gift of male sexual restraint is equivalent to the gift of female sexual consent. In Lope de Vega’s La Dorotea, the quid pro quo is interrupted by a rival suitor whose flashy New World wealth eclipses the impoverished poet’s gift of romantic verse. Society’s usual collective willingness to “misrecognize” gifts as spontaneous gestures with no strings attached, loses its tenability here. The female protagonist’s agency in the gifting game proves limited as her entire community—in this case, parents, servants, friends, neighbors—all work to sell her off to the highest bidder. Each love gift is exposed as somehow self-interested, which ultimately arouses suspicion and cynicism around all amorous exchange in the text.

  • Woody Allen's New Trilogy?
Spring 2005 111 Woody Allen’s New Trilogy? Maurice Yacowar Ever the one to serve up old whines in new battles, Woody Allen replays familiar themes and strategies in his three new one-act plays. Indeed, the familiarity of his material by now approximates to ritual. But a close examination finds fresh nuance and development. Moreover, as their coincidental language and themes make the plays a triptych, even a familiar element gains new meaning from the enlarged context. Like most of his films since Annie Hall (1977) and Manhattan (1979), the trilogy deals with amoral rationalization, betrayal, and infidelity among the urbane intelligentsia. As he anatomizes his neighborhood’s Civilization and Its Discontents, each title cites a location that connotes class, affluence, and sophistication— “Riverside Drive,” “Old Saybrook,” “Central Park West”—yet the relationships prove savage. The first and third refer to Allen’s own Upper West Side. The first play’s hero, Jim Swain, lives at Central Park West and 78th.1 The middle setting offers escape, to the Connecticut slick of Annie Hall’s alien gentile/genteel family—but which also includes the psychopathic brother Duane (Christopher Walken). As the setting returns home, the lead characters return to their original relationships, their escapes thwarted. They clutch their illusions with the bittersweet resignation that closes The Purple Rose of Cairo (1985), where Cecilia (Mia Farrow) sinks back hopeless into her fantasies. The first two plays were originally produced by Atlantic Theatre Company in New York under the title Writer’s Block (2003), with Allen’s debut as stage director.

  • The Image of the Journalist in Silent Film, Part One: 1890 to 1919
Journalist in Silent Film 35 The Image of the Journalist in Silent Film, 1890 to 1929: Part One 1890 to 1919 Joe Saltzman Professor of Journalism Director of the Image of the Journalist in Popular Culture (IJPC) A Project of the Norman Lear Center Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism University of Southern California Los Angeles, CA [email protected] with Liz Mitchell Senior Research Associate Image of the Journalist in Popular Culture (IJPC) Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism University of Southern California Los Angeles, CA [email protected] Introduction This is the first installment in the landmark study of “The Image of the Journalist in Silent Film, 1890 to 1929.” It covers 1,948 films from 1890 to 1919. Part Two will cover the years from 1920 to the beginning of recorded sound in 1929. This is the first comprehensive study of the beginning of cinema’s earliest depictions of the journalist, mostly newspaper reporters, editors, and publishers. Newspaper fiction flourished at a time when journalism “was a revolutionary force, tearing up traditions, redefining public morality, and lending voice and encouragement to the disenfranchised. It reflected currents sweeping through every phase of American life. The skyrocketing circulations, the manic search for exclusive news, the sensational headlines, and the concentration of newspaper ownership were signs of an America changing from a rural society to an urban and industrial one. Since journalism so clearly mirrored and so loudly supported the new order, it became the preeminent symbol for the mechanization, standardization, democratization, and vulgarization of culture.”1 Historian Howard Good points out that the 1890s “represented a watershed not only in American journalism but also in American history.
