LET US REMEMBER AND REDEDICATE OURSELVES TO AMERICA Memorial Day is a special holiday for me. It is a time to remember the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifi ce for our great country. We do this with solemn military ceremonies, 21-gun salutes and stirring musical tributes. As Abraham Lincoln said at Gettysburg, "It is altogether fi tting and proper that we should do this."

I believe the last day of May should also be a time to rededicate ourselves to the principles of freedom that our military heroes have fought to preserve for more than 200 years. If we use the occasion to unite in our pursuit of liberty and justice for all, we move that much closer to being worthy of the sacrifi ces made on our behalf.

Check the schedules of all fi ve WTVP channels this month for programs around military LESLEY MATUSZAK history, personal sacrifi ce and honor. Included are the return of the annual National WTVP President and CEO Memorial Day Concert, the Memorial Day Remembrance on the Riverfront and A Conversation with Lt. Col “Buzz” Hefti, as well as the fi nal episodes of two great war dramas on Masterpiece. Let’s pause to remember, move forward with new resolve and salute the active military and veterans who serve the noble cause of freedom.

WEST BY ORPHAN TRAIN SUNDAY, MAY 16, 6 PM

Between 1854 and 1929, nearly a quarter million children from the East Coast were resettled under what came to be known as the Orphan Train Movement. The goal of the movement was to get homeless and destitute children off the streets of growing cities and resettle them with rural families. It is estimated that between 6,000 and 10,000 children were settled in Iowa. This Orphan Train documentary explores the origins of the movement and the experiences of the young riders through archival photographs, historical re-enactments, expert interviews and fi rst-person accounts from Orphan Train riders. LOCAL CONNECTION Peorian Jim Kidder shared with WTVP his special connection to the Orphan Train Movement. Kidder’s grandmother, Emily Reese, was one of the young orphans relocated to the Midwest. In 1892, Emily was born the youngest of 10 children in New York City. Emily’s father left the family when she was about two years old. Her mother soon became overwhelmed and Emily and her older brother, Richard, were sent to an orphanage. At age 13, Emily took a life-changing train trip that led her to several temporary homes in Iowa and fi nally a home in Wisconsin. Jim Kidder smiled and shared stories of his grandmother, who lived a full and happy adult life in Wisconsin. Although her real story started on the Orphan Train.

NOTE FROM THE STATION MANAGER

EVERYONE CAN EXPERIENCE THE ARTS ON WTVP

My granddaughter has begun dance class, and the whole family gets to attend via the internet. Every week we gather in front of the television, which is linked to my phone, and watch her perform. After stretching, the class learns ballet, jazz dancing and tap, or as she calls it, “clickily-clack.” As I watch her and others mimic their teacher’s movements, I think of the great exposure to the arts these kids are receiving.

WTVP is like that class. Throughout the year, the station broadcasts a variety of shows featuring dance. We do so, not because it’s “art,” but to provide all our viewers exposure to the discipline, athleticism and grace blended with movement to tell a story.

The next time WTVP airs a dance performance program, I urge all our members to watch for at least 15 minutes. Some styles may not be your cup of tea, but like the members of WILLIAM BAKER my granddaughter’s class, you will be exposed to various forms of dance. Unlike her class, WTVP Station Manager it will be performed by some of the world’s greatest artists. And who knows, you might and Executive Producer discover a new interest.

I am grateful that my granddaughter has a chance to learn some of the basic movements of various forms of dance. I am also grateful for your support of this station that allows everyone in our viewing area to experience all the arts. William

NOTE FROM THE CHAIRMAN

STAYING RELEVANT IN A CHANGING WORLD

With all the membership drives and fundraising you see on WTVP, it would be easy to believe that funding is one of the greatest challenges facing local public media. Don’t get me wrong, fundraising is critical to keeping quality programming on the air. But adequate funding will only get us so far if the programming and services the station is offering are not relevant to our viewers and the community.

The question of relevance has been with WTVP from the very beginning. Programming has evolved, technology has advanced, digital media and streaming have expanded the ways you interact with WTVP. As long as the programming and outreach services of this organization are meeting a public need, we trust that public media will remain a relevant part of people’s lives.

WTVP viewers and members are parents, grandparents, business leaders, teachers, students, artists and curious members of the community. This entire organization continues to work hard at remaining relevant to every individual who tunes in to any of ANDREW A. RAND our fi ve channels. How are we doing? NOVA: GREAT ELECTRIC AIRPLANE RACE WEDNESDAY, MAY 26, 8 PM NOVA looks at the array of promising new electric planes on the horizon and takes you for a ride in some impressive prototypes that are already in the air — such as Burt Rutan’s Long-ESA that can fl y at over 200 mph and climb to 3,000 feet in under six minutes. Boeing, Airbus, Raytheon and other major companies are currently racing to develop practical short-haul passenger planes promising to slash the operating costs and emissions of regular fl ights. But fi rst, signifi cant hurdles of battery weight, energy storage and cooling must be overcome. How long will it be before the dream of super-quiet, super-effi cient airliners becomes a reality?

AFROPOP: THE ULTIMATE CULTURAL EXCHANGE BAKOSÓ: AFROBEATS OF CUBA MONDAY, MAY 3, 7 PM Bakosó reveals the infl uence of contemporary African music in Cuba as not just a thing of the past, but a phenomenon happening now!
