Emblem Glyphs in Classic Maya Inscriptions: from Single to Double Ones As a Means of Place of Origin, Memory and Diaspora
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Institutional Repository of the Ibero-American Institute, Berlin Emblem Glyphs in Classic Maya Inscriptions: From Single to Double Ones as a Means of Place of Origin, Memory and Diaspora Péter Bíró Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms Universität Bonn, Germany [email protected] Abstract: e use of more than one emblem glyph as royal title is one of the least explained features of Classic Maya politics. Epigraphers suggest that double or triple emblem glyphs indicate dynastic mergers, although in several cases it could point to the move of a dynasty from one place to another. Women played an important part in connecting royal houses but in many instances their role is not well spelled out in the inscriptions. ere is no overall pattern, however examination of several examples from dierent regions allows to propose plausible explanations on why certain rulers had double emblem glyphs. Keywords: epigraphy; emblem glyphs; politics; toponyms; Classic Maya. -

In this paper I will consider briefly those changes made in the last 1,400 years, when the changes were made, and provide the possible reason for each. I will work backwards to end with a consideration of the time of Bede. As we will see, changes to the calendar system have ‘Club Indenture Tripartite made the thirteenth day of occurred frequently. Calculating Time and the End of Time in the Carolingian World, C. 740-C

Alternatively, focusing on fear, people might try to do something to prevent it, to attempt to suppress the anxiety or its causes. Political ideologies could be redrawn as a result; social structures remade. The apocalyptic could provide a language and framework for inspiring and conceptualising what was going on, which made it particularly potent and its popularity enduring.2 Apocalyptic tradition in the period is often closely associated with significant years which might have inaugurated either the Last Times or a final heavenly kingdom on Earth: the 6,000th year of the world (= c. AD 500 or c. AD 800 by different calculations), or, more famously, the Apocalyptic Year 1000.3 Scholars have argued that such thought influenced key events in European history, such as the decision to restore empire *I am grateful for the comments of the anonymous reviewers, as well as the thoughts of Justine Firnhaber-Baker, Richard Landes, Simon MacLean, Henry Mayr-Harting and Elina Screen. Astronomy and Mathematics of Yixing
In Nakamura, T., Orchiston, W., Sôma, M., and Strom, R. (eds.), 2011. Mapping the Oriental Sky. Proceedings of the Seventh International Conference on Oriental Astronomy. Tokyo, National Astronomical Observatory of Japan. Pp. 171-178. ASTRONOMY AND MATHEMATICS OF YIXING Yukio ÔHASHI (大橋由紀夫) 3-5-26, Hiroo, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo 150-0012, Japan. E-mail: [email protected] Abstract: Yixing was a Chinese Buddhist monk and astronomer in the Tang Dynasty of China. It is well known that he made an excellent calendar entitled Dayan-li in AD 727, which was once used also in Japan. In this paper, I would like to discuss his contribution in the field of astronomy and mathematics. I shall discuss a possible influence of Indian astronomy on Yixing in his new definition of mieri in the Dayan-li. And also, I would like to discuss his method of interpolation which was used in the Dayan-li. Yixing introduced some new methods of interpolation. The meaning of his interpolation is controversial, and I would like to present my own view regarding the origin of his interpolation method and compare it with another view presented by QU Anjing. Anyway, his method of interpolation can be understood as a natural development of Chinese interpolation during the Sui and Tang Dynasties.1 1 INTRODUCTION2 Yixing (一行)(AD 683–727)3 was a Chinese Buddhist monk and astronomer in the Tang (唐) Dynasty (AD 618-907) of China. Yixing is his Buddhist name, and his secular name was Zhang Sui (張遂)(Zhang being his family name). He is sometimes called Seng Yixing (僧一行)(Monk Yixing) or Yixing chanshi (一 行禪師 )(Zen master Yixing).
