GENEALOGY of the HAM FAMILY ,uzd of the YOUNG FAIVIILY Compiled by Thomas Caverno Ham 159 Park Avenue Arlington, Massachusetts JUNE 1949 Preface Genealogy of the direct descendants of WILLIAM HAM who (probably) came from England and settled in Portsmouth, Hampshire, in 1645. Also Genealogy of the direct descendants of JAMES YOUNG who came from Scotland before 1750. He first settled in Philadelphia, later moving to Barrington, New Hampshire. No attempt is made to follow the collateral descendants of either family. It is admitted that the record is not complete, and doubt less there are some errors. Spaces are left at appropriate places for recording the births of new members of the families. Also the book is inter leaved with blank pages. It is hoped that those who receive this book will keep the records of their branch of the family current, reporting all changes to the author. THE HAM FAMILY First known in Portsmouth, N. H. Probably came from England. No attempt is made in this record to follow other than the direct line as shown. It is known that members of this family went to Maine and elsewhere. 1. WILLIAM HAM. -B about 1600. D - Jan. 26, 1672. Settled permanently in Portsmouth, N. H. 1645. had grants of land in 1652, 1660 and 1665 of about 160 acres. This land is located about two miles from the B. & M. R.R. station in Portsmouth along the Piscataqua river on the road to Dover Point, called Christian shore. It is near "Cutt's" lane and originally was also called Ham's Point, and later Freeman's Point. M - Honor ~•pit e ,v''$ Children- 2. MATTHEW.-B as early as 1626. D - 1664. 2. Married - It is to be noted that Matthew died eight years before his father died, and so he did not inherit his father's property. He had grants of land, acreage not known, adjoining his father's land. So far as is now known he left no will. Children- [ 5 ] 3. THOMAS. - B as early as 1653. Was a mariner. Settled in Rhode Island. 3. WILLIAM. - B as early as 1656. Was executor of his grandfather's will. 3. MATTHEW. - Bas early as 1657. Was a cooper (prob ably making barrels for shipment of cod fish.) 3. JOHN. - B as early as 1660. D - 1731. "The Fisherman" most of his papers are signed "John Ham Fisherman". 3. JOHN HAM. - B - about 1660. ·, D - 1731. ', · He inherited part of the land in Portsmouth owned by his grandfather, William (1). He also had a grant of land in Barrington, N. H. The town was chartered May 10, 1722. Grants of land in the town of Barrington were made to inhabitants of Portsmouth who had paid "rates" (taxes) for four years last past and in accordance with such rates. The History of Rockingham and Strafford Counties com piled by D. Hamilton Hurd and published in 1882 lists the "Original Proprietors of the Town of Barrington", and the acreage allotted (Page 608). John Ham is listed as receiving 48 acres. He left a will and a settlement giving land and property to his sons and daughters and to his son (John Ham 4) rights to the land in Barrington. William - B Dec. 9, 1781. M - Mary Roberts. 6. SAMUEL HAM. B Dec. 9, 1763. D - Probably was! born in Barrington. He settled in Mad bury, N. H., buying land from Jonathan Huckins and possibly the house, known later as the "George Berry place". He was a farmer and trader. As there was little currency he made his own currency by giving and taking notes for wood lots, yokes of oxen, etc. These notes were used like checks and cleared through banks. Married Lydia Tibbets Sept. 28, 1788. She was the daugh ter of Jeremiah Tibbt)ts who owned a farm in Barrington, a quarter mile from the Madbury line on the Dover to Concord road. Aftex- Jeremiah Tibbets died he bought the shares in the estate from the heirs other than his wife, Lydia, and may have moved from Madbury to Bar rington. This became the home of the family, passing to Thomas (7) Samuel Caverno (8) George Samuel (9) who sold the farm. At this date (1949) it is known as the Waldron Sportsman Club. The house still stands. The barns and other buildings burned. Children - 7. Jeremiah - B Apr. 12, 1789. 7. Thomas - B Dec. U, 1792. D - Apr. 15, 1871. 7. Mary- B July 20, 1800. D - THOMAS HAM. -B Dec. 17, 1792. D -Apr. 15, 1871. Lived on the home farm in Barrington. For many years he was badly crippled with rheumatism (probably now known as arthritis) and was tenderly cared for by his son, Samuel Caverno Ham (8). The new Congregational church in Barrington was built in 1840, financed largely by sale of pews. On Nov. 30, 1840, Thomas Ham bought pew No. 33 for $49.50. It is in the family at this date. Married Mary (Polly) Caverno of Strafford, N. H. Oct. 18, 1818. She was born Feb. 4, 1799. Died Apr. 27, 1877. Children - 8. Samuel- B Jan. 21, 1820. D - May 1, 1821. 8. Lydia- B Oct. 16, 1821. D - July 15, 1861. M-John Tanner of Barrington. 8. Samuel Caverno - B Dec, 18, 1828. D - Mar. 12, 1894. 8. Sarah Jane - B May 18, 1831. D - Jan 12, 1863. 8. SAMUEL CA VERNO HAM. - B Dec. 18, 1828. D - Mar. 12, 1894. He was born and lived his entire life on the ancestral farm in Barrington, N. H. He was a progressive farmer. He greatly enlarged the house and barns and increased the size of the farm. He built the first silo in the community and installed sanitary equipment for care of milk and butter. He was a life-long member of the Congregational Church, and a Deacon for many years. As his father was a cripple he was not :required to go to the Civil War but voluntarily provided and paid a substitute. He was a highly respected citizen. ( 13 ] FIRST WIFE - Mattie A. Guy of Charlestown, Mass. Married Jan. 5, 1867. She was born April 16, 1838. Died June 5, 1871. Children - 9. Mary - B Feb. 2, 1868. D - about 1880. 9. Mattie L. - B June 4, 1870. D - Dec. 14, 1870. SECOND WIFE- Lurana Jane (Young) Hanson of Barrington, N. H. Married Dec. 25, 1872. She was born Jan. 31, 1835. D - Feb. 1, 1903. She was educated for a teacher at Oriad Institute, Wor cester, Mass., and at Charlestown, Mass. Seminary. She taught school for 14 years in Dover, N. H., becoming principal of a grammar school. As the "District School" was inadequate she taught her three sons, preparing them well for High School. She was a life-long member of the Congregational Church in Barrington, for many years teaching a class o:f girls. Children- 9. Thomas Caverno -- B May 29, 1874. 9. William Hale - B Aug. 31, 1875. 9. George Samuel- B Feb. 11, 1877. 9. THOMAS CAVERNO HAM - B May 29, 1874. FIRST WIFE - Lola Maude Trickey of Dover, N. H. Daughter of Charles H. and Ada Bond Trickey. · Married Jan. 15, 1902. She was born May 8, 1874. Died Dec. 17, 1932. Children - 10. (Dr) Thomas Hale - B in Oklahoma City, July 19, 1905. 10. (Dr) George Caverno - B in Pittsburgh, Pa., Dec. 8, 1912. 10. Josephine Bond-- B in Pittsburgh, Pa., July 9, 1915. [ 15 ] SECOND WIFE - Catherine (Kate) McCann Randall, of Chelsea, Mass. She was the widow of William J. Ran dall, a Dartmouth College classmate. Married Oct. 22, 1936. She was born Feb. 3, 1882. Died Jan. 19, 1947. 10. DR. THOMAS HALE HAM. - B July 19, 1905. Married Fanny Chapin Curtis of Marblehead, Mass. Daughter of Greely Stevenson and Fanny Hooper Curtis of Marblehead, May 16, 1936. She was born Jan. 11, 1908, in New York City, graduate of Smith College 1930. Children- 11. Thomas Caverno 2nd- B Feb.
