Women’s Field Hockey History 2020-2021 SEASON CANCELLED DUE TO COVID-19 PANDEMIC 2019-2020 Regular Season Record: 10-1-1 (1st in OUA) Playoff Record: * OUA Champions (defeated U of T in OUA gold medal game) * * U SPORTS silver medalists (lost to Victoria in Best-of-3 series in U SPORTS Final) * U SPORTS Most Valuable Player (Liz Hoffman Award) Katherine MacMillan U SPORTS All-Canadians: Katherine MacMillan OUA All-Stars: Mackenzie Janzen Katherine MacMillan Kayla Magarelli OUA Most Valuable Player Katherine MacMillan Coming into the 2019 season the Gryphons were determined to make it past the OUA final and qualify for a U Sports Championship. Guelph was dominant this season amassing a regular season record of 10-1-1 while outscoring opponents 54-11. Anticipation was high as the Gryphons hosted the OUA Championships on their home field. The Gryphons dominated their first two matches winning 8-0 against McMaster and 7-2 against Waterloo. The final was a close one, but Guelph managed to edge out U of T 1-0 on a goal by fifth- year star Katherine MacMillan. MacMillan was named the OUA’s Most Valuable Player and an OUA All-Star along with teammates Mackenzie Janzen and Kayla Magarelli. The Gryphons flew to Victoria where they would take on the Victoria Vikes in a Best-Of-3 Series for the U Sports Championship. The team fell short losing two straight to claim a silver medal. MacMillan capped off her star-studded career with a U SPORTS MVP award and All-Canadian honours. Guelph proved to be a formidable team again, especially with the return of talented forward Katherine MacMillan, who missed the entire 2017 season with a serious knee injury. MacMillan showed no ill effects, leading the team with 16 goals, which ranked her second in the OUA. With MacMillan joining veterans Rebecca Plouffe and eventual team MVP Rudi Ballard, Guelph was one of the top squads in the conference again, allowing just 11 goals en route to a 7-3-2 record. The Gryphons knew their biggest test would come at the OUA Championship and they were clinical in the opening round with a 3-0 win over Western. Guelph needed a dramatic 2-1 shootout win to eliminate the rival Toronto varsity Blues, who had beaten the Gryphons twice during the regular season. The OUA Final was a rematch from 2017 as Guelph took on the reigning champion York Lions. The Gryphons battled but were unable to generate the necessary offence, falling 1-0 to York. MacMillan and Plouffe were named U SPORTS All-Canadians. Already having lost key players from the previous year, head coach Michelle Turley entered the new campaign without her star forward Katherine MacMillan, who unfortunately suffered a devastating ACL tear in the exhibition season. But Guelph’s players adapted quickly, and new players emerged, like second-year midfielder Kayla Magarelli, converted to forward, who seamlessly stepped into a goal-scoring role. The Gryphons used a blend of sound defence and their excellent passing skills to win two and tie two in the first four games, conceding just one goal. They took their only defeat of the regular season on September 24, a stinging 3-1 loss to first-place York. But Guelph rolled through the rest of the schedule, recording shutouts in five of the last seven games to head into the postseason on a roll. Magarelli scored a hat trick in the playoff opener against Waterloo, an 11-0 win, before Olivia Finch and Alexa Corrado came through with a pair of early goals in a 2-0 win over rival Toronto in the semi-final. That set up a rubber match with the Lions, who Guelph beat 1-0 three weeks after that lone loss. York took leads twice, but the courageous Gryphons answered both times, including a clutch Magarelli goal that tied the match 2-2. But the dream of a fifth OUA banner ended when York star Jaslan Stirling notched the championship-winning goal in the second half, despite the Gryphons dominating the second half and doing everything they could to find a late equalizer. Magarelli recorded 14 goals on the season, ranking her 2nd amongst the OUA leading scorers. Guelph’s goaltenders combined for a .53 goal against average, second best in the league by one goal. For the seventh time in program history, and the second time in as many seasons, a Gryphon, Rebecca Plouffe, earned OUA Player of the Year honours. Plouffe also earned the distinction of OUA All-Star and U SPORTS All-Canadian. Third year forward Olivia Lane was the OUA’s leading scorer with 17 goals and became the sixth player in U of G history to be named OUA MVP. At the OUA Championship tournament in London, the Gryphons rolled past McGill 10-0 in the quarter-finals. In the semi-finals, Olivia Lane’s goal in the 59th minute would be enough to get the Gryphons past Western 1-0 to book a spot in the OUA finals as well as a berth to nationals. In the OUA Final, the Gryphons squared off against longtime rivals – the University of Toronto Varsity Blues. The meeting marked the 10th time in the last 12 years that these two schools had squared off in the OUA gold medal game. With the game tied at 2-2, U of T would score with just three minutes remaining to claim their third straight OUA banner. At nationals, hosted by U of T, the Gryphons would go 0-3 during round robin play before falling 2-0 to the Varsity Blues in the CIS Bronze medal game. En route to the final, the Gryphons defeated the Waterloo Warriors 4-0 in the semi-finals. The OUA silver qualified the team for their ninth consecutive appearance at the CIS Championships. After being on the short end against their archrivals from Toronto in the OUA Championships, the Gryphons came back in fiery style to defeat the Varsity Blues 4-2 in the bronze-medal match of the CIS Championships, hosted in Victoria.

    Graeme Ryder Whoever said great players don’t make great coaches has obviously never met École Sir John Franklin grad Graeme Ryder. Not only is Graeme one of the best basketball players to ever come out of the NWT, he is also an impressive coach who is on the rise in the Canadian basketball world. Graeme, who attended École Sir John Franklin High School from 2001 to 2004, was a standout on the court during high school and was a major reason why Sir John was so successful during his tenure. Graeme’s talents did not go unnoticed territorially, as he was selected to represent the Northwest Territories in several major national as head coach, he made the move to the events including the 1999 Canada Canadian U-Sports level as an assistant Summer Games and the Arctic Winter coach with the MacEwan University Games in 2002 and 2004.     Volunteer Recognition Award Leslie Blyth Nominated by The

    Volunteer Recognition Award Leslie Blyth Nominated by the Saskatchewan Soccer Association Volunteering for more than 25 years, Leslie Blyth has made an impact with the Saskatchewan Soccer Association, Canadian Soccer Association Competition Committee and President’s Forum, Sask Sport Board of Directors and, most recently, with the Saskatchewan Games Council. Joining her first soccer board in 1994, Leslie has helped host many local tournaments, as well as represent Saskatchewan at Canada Soccer National Championships. A member of Western Canada Games mission staff in 2019, she was the sport leader for women’s softball and volleyball. She was also a volunteer in 2019 for the Special Olympics Saskatchewan Winter Games. As a member of the Sask Sport Board of Directors, she served for four years including a term as Chair. Leslie is looked to as a leader in the sporting community and a passionate advocate for the benefits of sport. Marni Caldwell Nominated by Swim Saskatchewan Certified to officiate outside of Saskatchewan, Marni Caldwell has dedicated her volunteerism toward Swim Saskatchewan. A master official, meet referee, Hytek software lead, Sanction Chair and a member of the Swim Saskatchewan Board of Directors, she has done it all. In a regular swim season, Marni teaches a minimum of four official’s clinics and officiates at a minimum of five meets including year-round age group meets, masters and summer club meets. As Hytek software lead, Marni ensures knowledge is shared with other volunteers and coaches and keeps the software up to date and ready for meets. A positive energy at the pool, Marni is described as respectful, approachable and attentive to the coaches, athletes and organizers.
