C’est chose faite désormais avec MUSICALS MAGAZINE. Ce nouvel outil tentera de montrer au grand public, tout au long de l’année, la richesse et la qualité des musicals produits EDITO en France. Sous cette terminologie encore rare dans notre pays, sont regroupés la comédie musicale (musical comedy), le spectacle de théâtre musical (musical theatre), le spectacle musical (musical show), l’opérette et le film musical musical( film). Certes, Il y a encore une dizaine d’années, le théâ- l’introduction d’un nouveau vocable n’est jamais simple, mais il facilite la compréhen- tre musical - dans un registre léger - avait sion d’un art qui porte un nom quasi identique en anglais, en allemand, en italien et presque totalement déserté les scènes de en espagnol. L’intérêt grandissant du public pour ce genre mérite qu’on y consacre notre capitale. Avec l’arrivée d’Internet, le site ’’Regard en Coulisse’’ l’a rejoint et ils sont désormais devenus tous deux, une formidable source documentaire et d’information en matière de spectacles musicaux et, je tenais ici, à leur rendre hommage(1). D’autres nom- breux sites sont venus depuis les rejoindre sur la toile, mais la nécessité d’un tel maga- zine - gratuit - devenait également indis- pensable pour assurer la promotion d’un genre qui n’est encore que très modeste- ment relayé par les gros médias. Pour ce premier numéro, je me retrouve promu ’’rédacteur en chef’’, au bénéfice de l’âge. Titre démesuré car je n’ai fait que canaliser la jeune équipe qui s’est alors rapidement constituée, en laissant ’’carte blanche’’ à chacun de ses rédacteurs. Cela vous permettra, au fil de leurs articles, d’y trouver la plus totale diversité de tons, de styles … et de sujets… exclusivement consacrés au ’’musical’’.     BROADWAY MUSICALS: RECENT PRESERVATIONS OF MUSICALS ON THE CONCERT STAGE AND IN THE STUDIO By James Fisher In 1985, RCA record producer Thomas Z. Shepard assembled an extraordinary cast of Broadway luminaries for two special performances of Stephen Sondheim's 1971 musical, Follies, which previously was represented in recordings by only an original cast album which eliminated, or significantly abbreviated, much of the score. Shepard's recording (RCA Red Seal, RCD2-7128) features virtually the entire score of the show, with snatches of dialogue, as recorded in concert before two enthusiastic audiences at Lincoln Center. In 1988, conductor John McGlinn's restored, complete (including a lengthy appendix of songs added to later versions of the show) studio recording (EMI, CDS 7 49108 2) of Jerome Kern's and Oscar Hammerstein's classic 1927 Broadway musical play, Show Boat, was released to widespread critical acclaim. The much­ recorded Show Boat had never before been captured in its entirety, and previous versions featured so many interpolations, omissions, or "updated" orchestrations that the simple beauty of Kern's score was often obscured. The success of these two otherwise unrelated recordings contributed to a revival of a nearly lost art-the studio recording of Broadway musicals with a cast and orchestra assembled not for any particular production, but for the sole purpose of preserving the score. The unexpected and extraordinary commercial success of the Follies and Show Boat recordings renewed interest in studio revivals of musicals leading to a flood of revisits to earlier works of the musical stage, while inspiring experimentation with the ways in which these recordings may present most successfully the score.

    Landmarks Preservation Commission November 17, 1987; Designation List 196 LP-1333 FORTY-SIXTH STREET THEATER (originally Chanin's Forty-Sixth Street Theater), 226-236 West 46th Street, Manhattan. Built 1924; architect, Herbert J. Krapp. Landmark Site: Borough of Manhattan Tax Map Block 1017, Lot 48. On June 14 and 15, 1982, the Landmarks Preservation Commission held a public hearing on the proposed designation as a Landmark of the Forty-Sixth Street Theater and the proposed designation of the related Landmark Site (Item No. 29). The hearing was continued to October 19, 1982. Both hearings had been duly advertised in accordance with the provisions of law. Eighty-one witnesses spoke or had statements read into the record in favor of designation. One witness spoke in opposition to designation. The owner, with his representatives, appeared at the hearing, and indicated that he had not formulated an opinion regarding designation. The Commission has received many letters and other expressions of support in favor of this designation. DESCRIPTION AND ANALYSIS The Forty-Sixth Street Theater survives today as one of the historic theaters that symbolize American theater for both New York and the nation. Built during the mid-1920s, the Forty-Sixth Street was among the half-dozen theaters constructed by the Chanin Organization, to the designs of Herbert J. Krapp, that typified the development of the Times Square/Broadway theater district. Founded by Irwin S. Chanin, the Chanin organization was a major construction company in New York. During the 1920s, Chanin branched out into the building of theaters, and helped create much of the ambience of the heart of the theater district.

And though the ex­ istence of the road has long been acknowledged, a substan­ tial part of that theatre history--made when the theatre’s most important personalities in their original roles were criss-crossing America--still remains to be written. In the professional theatre of the nineteen sixties the road is confined to a relatively small group of larger cities privileged to view Broadway successes and mediocrities Columbus, Ohio is one of these cities. Over the years Columbus has had many legitimate playhouses (Market House, Comstock's Theatre, The Great Southern Theatre), but the Hartman Theatre, since its opening in 1911, has been the busiest and most important theatre in central Ohio. From its opening until the present except for a period of dark­ ness between 1963 and 1964, the Hartman has made profes­ sional theatre available to Ohio audiences.
