The disappearing native mammals of northern Australia 1 SUMMARY Since European settlement, the deepest loss of Australian biodiversity has been the spate of extinctions of endemic mammals. Historically, these losses occurred mostly in inland and in temperate parts of the country, and largely between 1890 and 1950. A new wave of extinctions is now threatening Australian mammals, this time in northern Australia. Many mammal species are in sharp decline across the north, even in extensive natural areas managed primarily for conservation. The main evidence of this decline comes consistently from two contrasting sources: robust scientifi c monitoring programs and more broad-scale Indigenous knowledge. The main drivers of the mammal decline in northern Australia include inappropriate fi re regimes (too much fi re) and predation by feral cats. Cane Toads are also implicated, particularly to the recent catastrophic decline of the Northern Quoll. Furthermore, some impacts are due to vegetation changes associated with the pastoral industry. Disease could also be a factor, but to date there is little evidence for or against it. Based on current trends, many native mammals will become extinct in northern Australia in the next 10-20 years, and even the largest and most iconic national parks in northern Australia will lose native mammal species. This problem needs to be solved. The fi rst step towards a solution is to recognise the problem, and this publication seeks to alert the Australian community and decision makers to this urgent issue. -

Shannon Clohessy 2014 2 Abstract This study looks at dietary preference of the Haliaeetus leucogaster in the Houtman Abrolhos and on coastal and near shore islands between Shark Bay and Jurien Bay. Prey species were identified through pellet dissection, which were collected from nests and feeding butcheries, along with prey remains and reference photographs. Data extracted from this process was compared against known prey types for this species. Potential foraging distances were calculated based on congeneric species data and feeding habits and used to calculate foraging habitat in the study sites and expected prey lists to compare against observed finds. Final Report Paddy Pallin Research Grant Robyn Shaw Summary Australia has suffered severe declines in its native mammal fauna, with the most drastic declines occurring for native rodents. This is partly due to changing fire regimes, with wildfires becoming more frequent and intense in many regions. In order to halt these declines, it is important to understand how populations respond to, and recover after fire. My research focuses on the Kimberley region of Western Australia. Funding by the Royal Zoological Society of NSW’s Paddy Pallin grant allowed me to carry out a follow-up field season after a fire experiment I performed one year previous. This meant that I was able to trap pale field rats (Rattus tunneyi), a vulnerable native Australian rodent, over three trapping sessions: before, immediately after and one year after these prescribed burns. I found that vegetative cover decreased substantially after fire. This was much more dramatic in the thorough burns than in the patchy burns and certain types of vegetation were more likely to burn than others (in particular, the preferred vegetation of the pale field rat). I also found that as the percentage of the site that burnt increased, the abundance of pale field rats decreased. This was also true for the number of animals recaptured immediately after the fire, with no animals surviving after thorough fires. However, surprisingly, both the vegetation and pale field rat populations completely recovered one year after fire. This suggests that populations can rapidly recover after fire. However, the mechanism driving the recovery process may differ between thorough and patchy fires. -

Major prey of prey of feral cats in Australia (from Dickman, C. R. 1996). Data collected from 22 studies of feral cats in mainland Australia suggest that mammals comprise the major prey of feral cats in most localities. Introduced rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) and house mice (Mus domesticus) predominate in semi-arid to arid habitats, whereas marsupials (especially the common ringtail possom (see Pseudocheirus peregrinus in IUCN Red List of Threatened Species) are predominant in temperate forest, urban and suburban habitats (Dickman 1996). Brushtail possoms (Trichosurus vulpecula), sugar gliders (see Petaurus breviceps in IUCN Red List of Threatened Species), greater gliders (see Petauroides volans in IUCN Red List of Threatened Species) and smaller prey such as brown antechinus (see Antechinus stuartii in IUCN Red List of Threatened Species), brush rat (see Rattus fuscipes in IUCN Red List of Threatened Species) and swamp rat (see Rattus lutreolus in IUCN Red List of Threatened Species) are consistently part of the diet of feral cats in the temperate forests of Australia. In wet-dry tropical habitats where rabbits do not occur native Rattus spp. become more important, including the pale field rat (see Rattus tunneyi in IUCN Red List of Threatened Species), dusky rat (see R. colletti in IUCN Red List of Threatened Species) and the long-haired rat (see Rattus villosissimus). Smaller rodents such as the spinifex hopping mouse (see Notomys alexis in IUCN Red List of Threatened Species) and the sandy inland mouse (Pseudomys hermannburgensis) may also be preyed upon. Birds are represented most highly in temperate forest, urban and suburban habitats. -

Our camp was on Ngangkan in Ngulkwardde country, in the Warddeken IPA on the western Arnhem Plateau, Northern Territory. The elders chose Ngangkan for the families to camp because it is a peaceful place, away from town, with lots of bush tucker; a place to bring back memories to share and a place for kids to learn about cultural knowledge. 3 Honouring the past We were remembering and honoring our past leaders Wamud Namok, Kodjok Nawurrban and Ngarridj Nadjordi, and we were spending time with our leaders who are still here, the old women Mary Naborlhborlh, Mary Kalkiwarra, Lillian Guymala, Leonie Guymala, Deborah Nabarlambarl and Leanne Guymala. We did mayh survey in this area as it is part of our mayh and feral cat project over Kodwalewale, Ngolkwarre and Bolkngok areas. 4 What did we do? 1. Cultural activities including; gathering (bushtucker, cultural materials like pandanas, digging sticks), knowledge sharing in evenings, corroboree with singing and dancing, traditional cooking, making music with traditional instruments, knowledge sharing everyday as part of life. -

REPORT TERRESTRIAL FAUNA SURVEY FOR PROPOSED VICTORIA HIGHWAY UPGRADE Prepared by Paul Horner and Jared Archibald Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory INTRODUCTION The Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory (MAGNT) has been commissioned to conduct baseline fauna surveys of sections of the Victoria River region. These surveys relate to a proposal by the Northern Territory Department of Planning and Infrastructure (DPI) to upgrade sections of the Victoria Highway to improve its flood immunity between the east and west of Australia. This report provides information on the terrestrial vertebrate fauna found or expected to be found in the vicinity of the Victoria Highway, Northern Territory, between chainages 185 km to 220 km. The information has been obtained through direct field observations and reference to existing data. SCOPE AND METHODOLOGY The objectives of the fauna survey were to: · Describe the terrestrial vertebrate fauna (amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals) of the area, and to provide information on the relative abundance and habitat requirements of each species. · Determine the presence of any species of special conservation significance, such as rare, threatened or restricted species, and assess their local and regional status. · Assess the ecological significance of the area as a wildlife refuge, roosting or breeding habitat. Habitats and sample sites The area surveyed comprised that section of the Victoria Highway between 8 km east of the Victoria River Bridge and west to the Fitzroy Station turn-off. Particular attention was paid to areas that may be significantly impacted by the proposed upgrade, such as 1 bridge-works at Joe, Lost and Sandy Creeks and the Victoria River.
