The Salem Witch Trials: a Microhistory The Salem Witch Trials: A Microhistory A Senior Project presented to the Faculty of the History Department California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Bailey Hitch; Bachelor of Arts by Bailey Hitch June, 2010 © 2010 Bailey Hitch 1 The Salem Witch Trials: A Microhistory The Salem witch trials have captured our nation’s collective imagination, terrifying, disgusting, and mesmerizing us for centuries. Moreover, they puzzle us. What happened in Salem to allow for the wild accusations of a handful of villagers, mostly young women, to lead to over two-dozen deaths and over a hundred imprisonments? I believe that by looking closely into the lives of two accusers, Ann Putnam, Jr. and Mercy Lewis, we can gain a better understanding of the motivations for and nature of the witchcraft accusations. In mid-January of 1692 the largest American witch-hunt began. Although not originally unique in substance or size, it soon escalated to a scale heretofore absent in the New World. The scare began with the afflictions of Elizabeth Parris and Abigail Williams, the young daughter and niece of the Reverend Samuel Parris. The girls were in fits and complained of torments. After several weeks a physician, most likely the village doctor William Griggs, concluded that the girls had been bewitched. Shortly after this diagnosis Elizabeth and Abigail named the Parris’ slave, Tituba as their tormentor. From here the craze began to grow, as other girls and young women joined the ranks of the accusers. At first the accused people fit the profile of a typical alleged witch: poor, elderly, and female. 1 As the crisis grew though, accusers began to point fingers at respected members of the community, including ministers, church members, and political figures. The crisis spread from Salem Village into the neighboring cities and towns, most notably the nearby town of Andover. The hunt began to lose steam in October of 1692 and by November the crisis had ended. One hundred and forty-four people had been 1 Richard A. Horsley, “Who Were the Witches? The Social Roles of the Accused in the European Witch Trials,” Journal of Interdisciplinary History 9, no. 4 (Spring, 1979): 689. 2 accused of witchcraft, twenty had been executed, and four had died in jail. 2 While these basic facts on the witch hunt at Salem have been known for hundreds of years, it is the question of why the hunt happened the continues to puzzle historians today. The literature on this topic is rich and diverse. Most notably perhaps is the work of Paul Boyer and Stephen Nissenbaum. In Salem Possessed: The Social Origins of Witchcraft the authors argue that the witch crisis was caused by divisions created by geography, wealth, social leadership, church membership, and dependence on Salem Town. 3 They argued that the divisions in the town between agrarian villagers and villagers more closely tied to capitalism and Salem Town spurred on the trials, which reflect Salem’s divisions. 4 Boyer and Nissenbaum’s work was groundbreaking and introduced the idea that economic and geographic factors may have played a major role in the trials. Mary Beth Norton’s recent work on the subject has also been very important. Norton argues that while there was an initial wave of accusations that were unrelated to the frontier, the second and more violent phase was driven largely by colonists’ fear of Native American attacks. 6 Another approach literature on the Salem trials has taken has been to look at the extent of the accusers’ guilt. Are they to be held accountable for their actions or were they influenced by illness, hysteria, legitimate fear, or, especially in the cases of the younger accusers, their families? Some historians, such as Marilynne Roach in The Salem Witch Trials , argue that the accusers believed that what they reported was the truth. In this case the majority of accusers would be innocent of malicious action.7 Mary Kilbourne Matossian argues in Poisons of the Past: Molds, Epidemics, and History that the bewitched were innocent for other reasons. 8 She believes that their experiences were hallucinations and convulsions brought on by food poisoning and that they were reporting what they thought to be true. There is also a body of literature that disagrees with this and argues that the accusers were fully aware of what they were doing. One such historian is Bernard Rosenthal. In Salem Story: Reading the Witch Trials of 1692 he argues that the accusations were intentional and pre-meditated and the idea of the accusers as a ring of 5 Mary Beth Norton, In the Devil’s Snare: The Salem Witchcraft Crisis of 1692 (New York: Alfred A. Finally, there is a subset of this literature that looks at how gender influenced the trials. Carol Karlsen argues in The Devil in the Shape of a Woman: Witchcraft in Colonial New England that New Englanders’ fear of female sexuality contributed to the hunts. 10 Similar to the work that has been done on European witch-hunts, her work looks at the impact of religion and traditional beliefs on people’s attitudes toward women and witchcraft. In The Devil’s Disciples: Makers of the Salem Witchcraft Trials , Peter Charles Hoffer looks at gender from a different angle, arguing that gender played an important role in the lives of the accusers. 11 Not only does he suggest that some of the driving accusers were sexually abused, he also suggests that the young women’s repression may have caused their behavior. Keeping in mind this body of literature, I believe I have added to it by conducting a close study of the lives and accusations of Ann Putnam, Jr. and Mercy Lewis. As part of the Putnam clan that Boyer and Nissenbaum argue was so instrumental in village dissension and later witchcraft accusation, a study of Ann Putnam’s influences and accusations reveals the extent of political, geographic, and economic influences. I believe that Ann’s accusations reveal family influences that were motivated by the divisions mentioned in Boyer and Nissenbaum’s work. Her parents’ roles in the trials show that the family was involved and possibly influencing her actions. There is also a strong correlation between the families politically opposed to the Putnams and those accused of witchcraft by Ann, which again supports the case of familial influence. Ann is a prime candidate for this study because of the prominence of her family and the many accusations that she made. In addition to Ann Putnam, I will be looking closely at the influences on and accusations of Mercy Lewis. Because she came from the northern frontier and experienced the Indian wars she is an excellent accuser to study in order to evaluate the effect of the Indian wars on the trials. I believe that her accusations draw on the Indian wars and were influenced by her experience on the frontier. 12 I would also like to argue that Mercy impacted Ann’s accustions. As a young woman working and living in the Putnam household, Mercy had close contact with Ann Jr. Her influence is visible in the younger girl’s accusations, which also reflect the violence in the north. 13 I believe my paper will be a valuable addition to the work already done on the Salem witch trials because it takes a close and focused look at two important accusers. By examining their influences and accusations in detail we can see the importance of inter-family politics, discussed by Boyer and Nissenbaum, and the Indian wars, discussed by Mary Beth Norton.

BEWITCHING THE BLAME: THE CRUCIBLE ’S LEGACY OF APPROPRIATION AND SEXUAL SHAME IN POPULAR CULTURE HOPE MORRIS 61 Pages In The Crucible Arthur Miller uses tropes of female characters, Abigail and Tituba, to tell a story of male heroism. In the process, he dismisses and appropriates the true stories of women who suffered during the Salem witch trials for his own political and personal gain. In this thesis, I argue that Miller’s appropriation and sexualization of women continues into contemporary popular culture depictions of the Salem witch trials including the movie adaptation of The Crucible and the television shows Salem and American Horror Story: Coven . These depictions appropriate and sexualize women’s stories in order to fulfill the male gaze. This thesis also explores how three contemporary women playwrights are writing new plays that address the sexism of Arthur Miller, show how The Crucible perpetuates abuse, and encourage women to confront sexism by creating their own works about the Salem trials.

However, at the same time, it has been shown that, although purporting to represent spoken conversation, these texts probably reflect actual spoken language only partially and to different degrees (for the evaluation of the degree of “spokenness” of these text categories, see Culpeper and Kytö 2000; see also Kryk-Kastovsky 2000; Moore 2002). Drama and fiction dialogue, for example, represents constructed speech produced by an author who may have been more or less successful in mimicking contemporaneous spoken conversation.

    The Devil’s in the Details: A Comprehensive Look at the Salem Witch Mania of 1692 __________ Ashley Layhew Nine-year-old Betty Parris began to convulse, seize, and scream gibber- ish in the winter of 1692. The doctor pronounced her bewitched when he could find no medical reason for her actions. Five other girls began ex- hibiting the same symptoms: auditory and visual hallucinations, fevers, nausea, diarrhea, epileptic fits, screaming, complaints of being bitten, poked, pinched, and slapped, as well as coma-like states and catatonic states. Beseeching their Creator to ease the suffering of the “afflicted,” the Puritans of Salem Village held a day of fasting and prayer. A relative of Betty’s father, Samuel Parris, suggested a folk cure, in which the urine of the afflicted girls was taken and made into a cake. The villagers fed the cake to a dog, as dogs were believed to be the evil helpers of witches. This did not work, however, and the girls were pressed to name the peo- ple who were hurting them.1 The girls accused Tituba, a Caribbean slave who worked in the home of Parris, of being the culprit. They also accused two other women: Sarah Good and Sarah Osbourne. The girls, all between the ages of nine and sixteen, began to accuse their neighbors of bewitching them, saying that three women came to them and used their “spectres” to hurt them. The girls would scream, cry, and mimic the behaviors of the accused when they had to face them in court. They named many more over the course of the next eight months; the “bewitched” youth accused a total of one hundred and forty four individuals of being witches, with thirty sev- en of those executed following a trial.

    Salem Witch Trials describe darkest era in American history Vida Bikales & The Barn Players By Bob Evans Arthur Miller’s tragic, gloomy, Gothic-inspired tale of witchcraft, lechery, murder, and blind religious justice–with a huge dose of ignorance– spelled the darkest days of American history when New England towns succumbed to a frenzied idea that witches walked among them, thereby creating public executions of persons accused of contracting with the devil. The most famous American trials befell the town of Salem, Massachusetts, immortalized in Miller’s “The Crucible,” now playing at The Barn Playhouse in Mission, Kansas. Troubling, dark and dismal from the opening scenes, “The Crucible” only spirals deeper and darker with each scene as the story of adolescent girls pretend to summon evil spirits, dance naked, and drink chicken blood to cast spells on innocent townsfolk, causing the hangings of 19 “guilty” witches in their small town. Only decades after Miller’s work played world stages did the State of Massachusetts amend their judgments and pardon those accused and murdered as witches. Vida Bikales & The Barn Players “The Crucible” at The Barn carves the story into the hearts of the audience so thoroughly and completely. Do not expect levity in this show because there is none. Miller researched the actual Salem court records and used much of the testimony verbatim in crafting his play. Even with the focus on one particular family, the devastation created continues to create shivers when viewed. Luckily, Salem preserved their historic blunder and some cells that held the accused remain intact. Some chains remain attached to walls, and “The Crucible” and other such plays continue there for tourists who visit America’s most horrid injustices.

THE sporadic and epidemic manifestations of .witchcraft during the seventeenth century in New England were bnt symptoms of a belief in satanic agencies, world-wide and pervading all ages. As a psychological symptom, it has created a large number of treatises, learned or emotional, some confidently adhering to the belief, others corrective or sternly critical. Lecky, who has touched the subject in his History of Rationalism, gives high praise to the learn- ing and ability of Maury's Histoire de la Magie (Paris, 1860). The retrospections of the Commentaries of Black- stone, the records (1661) of the Tryal of Witches at the Assizes for the County of Suffolk, March, 1664, before Sir Matthew Hale (London, 1682), (which Cotton Mather summarized in his Wonders of the Invisible World), and T. Glanvil's Sadducismus triumphans, or full and plain evidence concerning witches and apparitions (London, 1681,)—a book on which the Mathers feasted—show how thoroughly perverse public opinion was in England in tl^e days when colonial New England looked thither for guid- ance. The commonness of the frenzy is. shown in such books as W. H. D. Adams's Historical sketches of magic and loitehcraft in England and Scotland (London, 1889). Michael Dalton's Country Justice (1619, etc.,) was the authority for the English practice in such trials.     Walton 1 Claire Walton HIST 2090 29 November 2017 Final Paper A Pious Woman Condemned by Rumor, Church, and Court: The Case of Elizabeth Howe “Though shee wer condemned before men shee was Justefyed befor god”1 -Goody Safford Prior to the year 1682, Goody Elizabeth Howe enjoyed a reputation defined by piety, honesty, and neighborliness. Two distinct disputes in 1682 would come together ten years later during the Salem witch crisis to place Elizabeth’s life in mortal peril. A “faling [out]” between Samuel Perley and the Howes preceded fits suffered by Samuel’s daughter, who reportedly identified Elizabeth as her tormentor. Although ministerial accounts contested Elizabeth’s culpability, rumors spread and stained Elizabeth’s holy reputation. Her rejection from the Ipswich Church approximately two or three years later, informed by the rumor of witchcraft and other reports from neighbors, exacerbated suspicion, as those involved in the church’s decision attributed maleficium to Elizabeth.2 The second dispute occurred on June 14, 1682, the same year Samuel Perley’s daughter first reported afflictions. The Topsfield men, Thomas Baker, Jacob Towne, and John Howe, Elizabeth’s brother-in-law, challenged John Putnam of Salem Village over his claim to land along the Ipswich River. This dispute pitted the Howe family against the Putnam family, a driving force behind the Salem witch trials of 1692. Ultimately, Elizabeth’s reputation of witchcraft coupled with her relationship to John Howe and by extension association with the Putnam land dispute influenced her conviction as a witch.     Ann Putnam's Confession (1706) Ann Putnam was one of the accusers in the 1692 Salem Witch Trials, eventually claiming that 62 members of the community were witches. She was 12 years old at the time. As a result of the claims of Putnam and others in Salem Village, 19 people were executed for being witches. In addition, another accused individual was executed for refusing to submit to a trial, and several others died while in prison awaiting trial or execution. The trials were widely publicized at the time, and they continue to capture public attention through modern representations of the events, such as Arthur Miller’s 1953 play, The Crucible. Significantly, Putnam was the only accuser who issued a public confession, which is reproduced below. Note: “Goodwife” was used much as we use the titles “Miss” or “Mrs.” today. “Goodwife Nurse” was Rebecca Nurse, one of the women she accused of witchcraft. "I desire to be humbled before God for that sad and humbling providence that befell my father's family in the year about '92; that I, then being in my childhood, should, by such a providence of God, be made an instrument for the accusing of several persons of a grievous crime, whereby their lives were taken away from them, whom now I have just grounds and good reason to believe they were innocent persons; and that it was a great delusion of Satan that deceived me in that sad time, whereby I justly fear I have been instrumental, with others, though ignorantly and unwittingly, to bring upon myself and this land the guilt of innocent blood; though what was said or done by me against any person I can truly and uprightly say, before God and man, I did it not out of any anger, malice, or ill-will to any person, for I had no such thing against one of them; but what I did was ignorantly, being deluded by Satan.
