IMPORTANT NOTE TO THE MEDIA The Department of Higher Education and Training recognises that the information contained in the list of registered private colleges is of public interestand that the media may wish to publish. But those men were almost always shirtless, often seen from the back or with their faces obscured by a shovel or an arm in motion. The fate of the building over the decades that followed can be seen as a reflection of the history of 20th-century Cape Town itself. Just 16 years after unveiling it, the South African Mutual Life Assurance Society abandoned it for a wealthy suburb, marking the beginning of a larger and devastating exodus from downtown. An array of commercial tenants leased the space as the years passed, but no one knew what to do with the striking, now empty building. By the early 1990s, as apartheid was at last eliminated, most of Cape Town’s businesses had left the city, leaving hollowed out, grandiose structures as a reminder of the wages of the Empire, institutional racism and urban flight. A BROTHER AND sister in their 30s who were raised in the wine business and now live mostly on a vineyard estate nearly two hours from Cape Town grew up with the Art Deco masterpiece and knew of its historical importance long before PEOPLE, PLACES, THINGS PEOPLE, PLACES, they imagined that they would one day be part of its story. “I remember feeling a sense of awe over the building’s complexity of history,” says the sister.

The Penthouse is on the 11th floor of this iconic Building . 14 Darling Street, Cape Town. HISTORY Opened in 1940, the "Mutual Building" (or "Mutual Gebou" in Afri- kaans) was reportedly then the tallest building in Africa (apart from the Pyramids in Egypt), and it had the fastest lifts. They still work, and they are still fast! You can see how it now compares favourably with some of the other tall buildings in the world. The Old Mutual Building has the greatest span between floors - more than five metres. At all levels, the ceil- ings are very high, and in one of the meeting rooms on the eighth level the curtains alone are more than six metres long. The design of the building is attributed largely to Fred Glennie - not widely known outside South Africa, but well known locally at the time. Art Deco is not to everyone's taste, but as incorporated into the design of the Mutual Building it is very, very impressive. Dark marble in the entrance hall, shades of paler marble in the magnifi- cent banking hall, and characteristic stainless steel trim and light fit- tings everywhere. Mutual Heights was one of the first conversions of an office building to residential use in the central business district of Cape Town. In this case, the office building is very special, being one of the fin- est art deco buildings in the southern hemisphere.

The project aims to provide a safe and reli- Improvement Project (GFIP) which is a far-reaching up- able strategic road network and to optimise, among others, grading programme for the province’s major freeway traffic flow and the movement of freight and road-based networks in and around the Metropolitan Municipalities public transport. 1 The GFIP is being implemented in phases. The first phase 1 Widened to five lanes per carriageway comprises the improvement of approximately 180 km of 2 Bridge widening at the Jukskei River existing freeways and includes 16 contractual packages. The 3 Placing beams at Le Roux overpass network improvement comprises the adding of lanes and up- 4 Brakfontein interchange – adding a third lane grading of interchanges. Th e upgrading of the Ben Schoeman Freeway (Work Package 2 C of the GFIP) is described in this article. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES Th e upgraded and expanded freeways will signifi cantly re- duce traffi c congestion and unblock access to economic op- portunities and social development projects. Th e GFIP will provide an interconnected freeway system between the City of Johannesburg and the City of Tshwane, this system currently being one of the main arteries within the north-south corridor. One of the most significant aims of this investment for ordinary citizens is the reduction of travel times since many productive hours are wasted as a result of long travel times.

Mda). While much has been written on the others, relatively little attention has been paid to Mda (1916-1993), the Youth League's President from 1947 to 1949 whom his peers regarded as the foremost political intellectual and strategist of their generation. He was known for his passionate avocacy of African nationalism, guiding the ANC into militant forms of protest, and pressing activists to turn to armed struggle in the early 1950s. In his late teens Mda began leaving a rich written record--through letters and essays in newspapers, political tracts and speeches,and letters to colleagues--that allows us to chart the evolution of his views throughout his life, not only on politics but also on culture, literature, music, religion, and education. JUDGMENT Nkutha-Nkontwana J. Background [1] In this matter the applicant (Solidarity) is suing the respondent (Damelin) by way of a stated case for a back-pay in the amount of R420 000.00 consequent to an order reinstating its member, Mr Parkinson. Damelin had dismissed Mr Parkinson on 15 May 2012. Solidarity unsuccessfully challenged his dismissal at the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA). The commissioner, Mr Sithole, found that his dismissal was procedurally and substantively fair. 2 [2] Solidarity launched the review proceedings and succeeded. In a judgement delivered on 2 December 2014, this Court, per Bleazard AJ, reviewed and set aside the award, replacing it with an order reinstating Mr Parkinson retrospective to 1 January 2014. Damelin appealed the judgment but was unsuccessful. The Labour Appeal Court, in judgment delivered on 10 January 2017, dismissed the appeal with costs. [3] I pause to allude to the fact that Mr Parkinson secured employment with his current employer on 21 August 2014. Soon after receiving the judgment by Bleazard AJ, Solidarity addressed a letter to Damelin, through its attorneys, proposing a discussion on compensation instead of reinstatement. Damelin was seemingly not indulgent; instead, it instituted the appeal proceedings. [4] On 17 January 2017, Damelin’s attorneys addressed a letter to Solidarity stating the following: ‘We refer to the above matter and note the judgment handed down by the Labour Appeal Court on 10 January 2017.
