Generation 1

1. ROBERT1 WOOD was born in 1787 in Peebleshire, Scotland. He died on 09 Sep 1867 in Lombardy, Ontario. He married (1) JENNY BROWN. He married (2) MARY MAHON. She was born about 1810.

Notes for Robert Wood: There are two versions of Robert Woods story. The first by JOHN ALBIN WOOD is a follows:

Robert Wood came from Perthshire, Scotland on one of the Baltic ships in 1815. He settled on a piece of land at Wayside, in Drummond township, on the way to Carleton Place. He was a school teacher and we believe he assisted in some of the survey work in the area. Robert Wood is mentioned in the book, A Pioneer History of Lanark County, Jean McGill.

We are told he was married to a Miss Brown also from Scotland who came with their two little boys to Canada in 1815. But his wife died in Montreal leaving him and his two boys to come ahead to Concession III, lot #7 of Drummond township to start a new life in Canada. He did marry late in life and had one child who later became a Mrs. George Bone of the Haliburton area. These men and their wives and families are in the Union Cemetery at Lombardy, Ontario.

An extract of the second source, ELIZABETH WOOD DODDS, reads:

"Robert Wood was born in the early seventeen eighties in Peebleshire on the Scottish border. He had one sister, Mary, and, I believe two brothers: James and John. Robert Wood married Janet Brown. Their two sons; James, and Robert were very young when Janet developed tuberculosis and died.

Robert Wood settled up his business in his small town in Peebleshire in the year 1815 and set out with his two little sons for Glasgow with the intention of sailing to Australia to join the other members of the family. But there was no ship scheduled for Australia in the near future when he reached Glasgow and he decided to go to Canada instead as the sailing ship "Baltic" was about ready to embark. A large number of Scottish families were waiting in Glasgow to sail on this same ship.

The crossing took six weeks, which was considered good at that time for sailing ships were dependent on favorable winds.

Robert Wood and his little sons landed in Montreal where he got work at shipbuilding and married Mary Mahon. But everyone was interested in getting land and in the summer of 1816 Robert Wood set out by water and land to Brockville, and from there to what is now known as Perth, a military settlement at that time."

His headstone is inscribed " WOOD / Robert / 1787-1867 / his wife / Jenny Brown / predeceased / natives of Perthshire / Pioneered to Canada 1815 / their son / James 1810-1873 / his wife / Sarah Ann Tweedy / 1806-1893 / native of Peebleshire". The headstone also has the saying "Behold, all you who pass by / As you are now, so once was I / As I am, so you too, shall be / Therefore prepare to follow me"

The headstone reference suggests that Jenny made it to Canada and is burried at Lombardy with Robert. The Baltic Merchant passenger list also adds further questions about Mrs. Wood's correct name.

The ship Baltic Merchant, under Captain Jeffreys, sailed from Greenock July 14th 1815, and arrived at Quebec September 4th 1815 with 194 passengers. The passenger list shows a Robert Wood, aged 33, with a family of five originating in Inverleithen, Peebleshire. There is a list of a family of 5 with wife Helen (Scott) (30) and three boys, John (9), James (7) and Robert (5).

This does not completely agree with the 1817 census data of Drummond Township which lists "WOOD, Robert: Ellen, James, Robert, Margaret." It would be a very big coincidence if there were two Wood families with similarly named children arriving on the same ship. Generation 1 (con't)

Robert appears in Drummond census reports in 1821 and 1822 with a wife, two sons and a daughter. Land records indicate that Robert took up land in Elmsley Township in 1835.

The date of Jenny's death is not known. If the Wood tombstone is correct in that Jenny is burried at Lombardy Union Cemetery then she lived into the late 1830's which is when the Bowen family donated the land for the cemetery. Robert (70) is shown in the 1852 census with his second (?) wife Mary (42).

3. ii. ROBERT WOOD was born in 1812 in Scotland. He died on 05 Apr 1878 in Lombardy, Ontario. He married (1) JANET MUNRO on 28 May 1841 in St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Perth, Ontario, daughter of Peter Munro and Mary NcNab. He married (2) MARGARET (AGNES) J WALKER in 1847 in Perth, Ontario. She was born in 1818. She died on 10 Dec 1872.

4. iii. MARGARET WOOD was born on 15 Sep 1815 in Ontario. She died on 04 Feb 1902 in North Crosby, Leeds Co., Ontario. She married ISRAEL BOWEN about 1836 in South Elmsley, Leeds Co., Ontario. He was born in Sep 1798 in Lansdowne Twp, Leeds Co., ON,. He died on 06 Nov 1887 in North Crosby, Leeds Co., Ontario. Generation 2

2. JAMES2 WOOD (Robert1) was born in 1810 in Scotland. He died on 22 Jun 1873 in Lombardy, Ontario. He married SARAH ANN TWEEDY, daughter of Robert Tweedy and Rose Sinnott. She was born in 1806 in County Wexford, Ireland. She died on 21 Jun 1893 in South Elmsley, Leeds and Grenville, Ontario (Died of old age at 88 years.).

Notes for Sarah Ann Tweedy: Sarah Ann Tweedy had come to Canada as an orphan in 1833 with several uncles, aunts and cousins - all Tweedys. Her youngest brother, James, came later with their aunt, Mrs. Doherty, and her husband. Sara Ann made her home with her uncle, Charles Tweedy, and his family, who had settled in Leeds County near Lombardy. The Anglican Church in Lombardy was built on their farm. The Wood family was Presbyterian, but since there was no church of that denomination at Lombardy, they attended the Anglican Church and there they met the Tweedys. Sarah Ann Tweedy lived to be 87 years of age and was known as a mid-wife in that area.

The Tweedies were from Perthshire, Scotland. The Tweedy family in Peebleshire was originally from Stenhouse in Lanarkshire. These two shires border each other. The origins of the family may be from Finlay de Twedyn del Comte de Lanark who in the year 1296 swore fealty to Edward the First of England. His son Rodger settled in Drumelzur on the Tweed near the town of Peebles. Hence the name.

WILLS - Following a general breaking up of the system, Mrs Patric Wills of Rideau Ferry, passed away on Tuesday, Sept. 19th, and in her death this district loses still another of its pioneer citizens. Eighty-four years ago Mary Anne Wood was born in the township of Elmsley, a daughter of the late James Wood, and she lived in the same section all her life. Her husband predeceased her. The late Mrs. wills was a woman of very fine character, a good neighbor, a warm friend, and as such will be sorely missed by all who knew her. She was a member of the Brethren. She leaves to morn her loss four sons, William, Edward and Albert of Vanguard, Sask., and John the Homestead in Elmsley, and two daughters, Mrs. Peter King and Mrs. John King, of Rideau Ferry. Two brothers also survive, John Wood and James Wood of Perth. The funeral took place on Saturday afternoon, Sept. 23rd, from the home of Mrs. John King, Rideau Ferry, to Rideau Ferry Cemetery. Mr. Chas. Warwicker, of Ottawa conducted the services.

Notes for James Wood: In the 1880s James set up a brickmaking works by Bass Lake. He himself built a number of brick buildings, which are still in use. The first, in 1882, was a farmhouse for himself and his wife Ann Wills, built as soon as the road (now the Old Kingston Road) was opened. Previously, he and his family had lived on the shore of the Rideau Lake, the lake being the only practical highway. Other of James Wood's brick buildings included the Rideau Antiques farmhouse - built as a home for Jack Joynt - and the Brethren gospel meeting hall next to the Wood farm. (James and Robert Wood, originally Methodist, were among the earliest adherents of the Brethren when this worship was introduced in South Elmsley in the 1880's.) James' son George later acquired the farm. The spot from which James Wood extracted the brick clay is a pond now, still part of the Wood property, and the house James built is still the family home. James Wood sold parts of his farm as cottage lots during the 1890's and early 1900's, for Rideau Lake lots were in much demand for summer homes.

Obituary - Perth Courier - March 27, 1969

JOHN E. KING - John Edward King of 17 Herriott Street, Perth, passed away suddenly at Kingston General Hospital on March 3, 1969.

Jack as he was known by his friends in Perth and district was born at Rideau Ferry, a son of the late Peter King, and wife Annie Wills. For many years he was employed at The Perth Shoe Company.

He is survived by his wife, the former Frances Saunders, and his son Robert John of 190, Hogan Avenue, Smith Falls and his daughter Carolyn (Mrs. Robert Irwin) of Kingston. Also Surviving are his brother William of Beamsville and two sisters, Isobel at Home and Kathleen, (Mrs. Cecil Woods) of Smith Falls. Another sister, Ethel (Mrs. Norman Lightfoot) died a few years ago.

The funeral service was conducted in the Blair and Son Chapel on March 5th by Rev. D.A. Timpany of First Baptist Church, Smith Falls. The pallbearers were George Wills, George Livingston, Clarence Livingston, Ross Coutts, James Palmer and Thayer Robinson. Interment will be in Rideau Feery Cemetery in the spring. Joseph Wills Laid To Rest

A well known district farmer, John Joseph Wills, of Rideau Ferry, died on Thursday, Nov. 10, after an illness of three weeks, he was 74 years of age. Mr. Wills was born at Rideau Ferry, October 16, 1881, and has been a life-long resident there. He was married in Rideau Ferry in 1909 to the former Helen B. Coutts, who survives him. He was the son of Patrick Wills and his wife, the former Mary Anne Woods.

Left to mourn his loss, besides his wife, are five sons, Albert and Ross both at home; Percy, of Smith Falls; Kenneth, of Montreal; and Maurice of Perth; three daughters, Mrs. Lawrence Anderson (Emily), of Winnipeg, Manitoba;Mrs Alvin Anderson (Grace), of Arran, Sask., and Mrs. Bruce Ewart (Helen), of Toronto; one Sister Mrs. Peter King (Annie) of Perth, and a brother, Albert (Abbie) Wills of Rideau Ferry.

The funeral service was conducted at his residence by Mr. H. Wakefield, Montreal on Sunday afternoon, November 13. Mr. R. Glading spoke at the grave side. Interment was at Rideau Ferry. The pallbearers were Ross Miller, Henry Covell, Robert F. Kellock, Gilbert Looby, Ross Coutts and Arthur Cope.

She was the daughter of the late Archie Coutts and Jennie C. Beveridge. She was married to the late John J. Willsin 1909 who predeceased her on November 10th, 1955. Left to morn her loss are three daughters, Mrs. Lawrence Anderson (Emily), of Winnipeg, Man.., an Mrs. Bruce Ewart (Helen), of Toronto, Ont., and Mrs. Alvin Anderson (Grace), of Brandon, Man., and five sons Albert and Ross, both of Rideau Ferry; Percy of Smith Falls; Kenneth of Montreal; and Maurice of Perth. Also Four brothers, Ernest Coutts of Windsor, Ont.; James, George and Ross Coutts, all of North Elmsley. Left to mourn her loss also are nineteen grandchildren. The funeral was held on Friday, March 4, at Blair an Son Funeral Home, then to Rideau Cemetery, the service being conducted by Dr. Ray Dodds of Chesterville, Ont. Mr R. Glading closed with a prayer at the grave side. The pallbearers were Bill Coutts, Murry, Coutts, George Wills, Jimmy Wood, Stanley Wills and Murray Wills.

Notes for Grace Wood: Grace Wood was 16 when she graduated from high school and entered the Ottawa Normal School. It was still traditional for young women to go into either nursing or teaching, and Grace preferred the one-year teaching course to the three-year nursing program. She did not attend at the stone building on Elgin Street frequented by earlier (and later) relatives, for that was assigned to wartime use. Instead, Grace's class used the Muchmore School. On completing her course in 1946 Grace began teaching in Smiths Falls, boarding there during the week and being collected by her father in his 1928 Dodge for weekends at home on the farm. She took summer courses in Ottawa and Toronto for professional improvement.

Notes for Isobel Mary Wood: The second of George and Amy's children, Isobel, also went to Normal School in Ottawa on completing high school in 1947. At the age of 17 Isobel was teaching in the same one-room schoolhouse where all the family had taken their elementary instruction. While the school building is still there, the school itself was closed in 1951. Isobel, its last teacher, moved to the Elgin school in Smiths Falls - now Duncan J. Schoular school. In July, 1953, Isobel married Earl Covell.

iii. WILLIAM JAMES WOOD was born on 28 May 1932. He died on 19 Oct 1987. He married LAYNE GODARD on 21 Aug 1965 in 146 Lansdowne Ave, Saint John, NB, daughter of Fredrick Laurence Godard and Ruth Gladys Anderson. She was born on 05 Sep 1942.

Notes for William James Wood: per Nancy Kenyon (written2002) The third of Amy and George Wood's children, Jim, took over the family dairy farm and married Layne Godard of Wickham, New Brunswick, a schoolteacher whom he met at bible camp at Parry Sound. Jim and Layne had four children - Laurence, Darlene, George and Norman. In 1988, before the young family had grown up, Jim died of cancer leaving Layne to carry on the responsibilities. Jim is buried in the Rideau Ferry Cemetery, where his parents were also buried. Layne discontinued farming and held a traditional farm auction of the equipment in April 1990. Some of the farm outbuildings have been taken down but the farmhouse is still a lively family centre and Darlene's horse still enjoys the use of the barn and barnyard.
