Introduction Dicercina GISTL, one of the largest and most widely distributed subtribes of the Buprestidae LEACH (several hundred – above 700 according to OBENBERGER 1926, 1930 – species in some 15-20 genera inhabiting almost all tropical and subtropical areas of the world), are represented in the Indo-Pacific Region by 10 genera and more than 100 species. The taxon comprises big or at least medium-sized, frequently colourful species, many of which are rather common, but nevertheless even their taxonomic relations and geographical distribution (to say nothing about bionomy) remain relatively poorly known: the last comprehensive review of the “Groupe Psilopterites Lac.” (KERREMANS 1910) is almost nine decades old and includes only a part of the subtribe as presently understood, my (HOŁYŃSKI 1999) dissertation is also incomplete (Ovalisia KERR. treated only at the subgeneric level) and anyway has remained unpublished, OBENBERGER’s (1926) world catalogue is already badly outdated, that of BELLAMY (2008) admittedly represents but uncritical compilation, and thus the recent revision of Dicerca ESCH. and Poecilonota ESCH. (HOŁYŃSKI 2005, 2011a) and of Indochinese Psiloptera SOL. by AKIYAMA & OHMOMO (1994) are the only more than exiguous contributions to the knowledge of the Indo-Pacific representatives of the Dicercina GISTL published in the last decades; as the easily understandable consequence the status and affinities of most forms are often falsely interpreted, names wrongly applied, and specimens in collections notoriously misidentified. -

These insects can cause impressive economic and ecological damage in the invaded environment. Thus, several countries use traps baited with pheromones and plant volatiles at ports of entry and surrounding natural areas to intercept incoming exotic species soon after their arrival and thereby reduce the likelihood of their establishment. In this study, we investigated the performance of eight trap colors in attracting jewel beetles and bark and ambrosia beetles to test if the trap colors currently used in survey programs worldwide are the most efficient for trapping these potential forest pests. In addition, we tested whether trap colors can be exploited to minimize inadvertent removal of their natural enemies. -

Current State of Knowledge on Wolbachia Infection Among Coleoptera: a Systematic Review
Current state of knowledge on Wolbachia infection among Coleoptera: a systematic review Łukasz Kajtoch1 and Nela Kotásková2 1 Institute of Systematics and Evolution of Animals Polish Academy of Sciences, Krakow, Poland 2 Faculty of Science, University of Ostrava, Ostrava, Czech Republic ABSTRACT Background. Despite great progress in studies on Wolbachia infection in insects, the knowledge about its relations with beetle species, populations and individuals, and the effects of bacteria on these hosts, is still unsatisfactory. In this review we summarize the current state of knowledge about Wolbachia occurrence and interactions with Coleopteran hosts. Methods. An intensive search of the available literature resulted in the selection of 86 publications that describe the relevant details about Wolbachia presence among beetles. These publications were then examined with respect to the distribution and taxonomy of infected hosts and diversity of Wolbachia found in beetles. Sequences of Wolbachia genes (16S rDNA, ftsZ) were used for the phylogenetic analyses. Results. The collected publications revealed that Wolbachia has been confirmed in 204 beetle species and that the estimated average prevalence of this bacteria across beetle species is 38.3% and varies greatly across families and genera (0–88% infected members) and is much lower (c. 13%) in geographic studies. The majority of the examined and infected beetles were from Europe and East Asia. The most intensively studied have been two groups of herbivorous beetles: Curculionidae and Chrysomelidae. Coleoptera harbor Wolbachia belonging to three supergroups: F found in only three species, and A and B found in similar numbers of beetles (including some doubly infected); however Submitted 14 November 2017 the latter two were most prevalent in different families. -

Cypress Borer (Lamprodila Festiva), a New Urban Pest in Hungary

Thuja orientalis), are stressed by dry and hot summers of last seasons. Then these weak, vulnerable trees were injured by secondary pests. During investigations in June 2013 and January 2014 at the Central Conifer Collection of Corvinus University Budapest, the highest injuries of the cypress borer (Lamprodila festiva) were detected on Thuja occidentalis cultivars ‘Asplenifolia’, ‘Bodmeri’, ‘Recurva Nana’, ‘Rheingold’, ‘Smaragd’, Platycladus orientalis ‘Juniperoides’, while the other cultivars, especially the columnar T. o. ‘Henezia’ and ‘Fastigiata’, the yellow-leaved T. o. ‘Yellow Ribbon’ and ‘Sunkist’, the globular cultivars, and practically all the T. plicata and the remaining Platycladus orientalis cultivars proved to be saved (yet) by the borer. (Total number of inspected Thuja and Platycladus cultivars was 108). From the genus Chamaecyparis (altogether 69 cultivars) only some juvenile forms, wile from the genus Juniperus (altogether 218 cultivars) Juniperus scopolorum ’Skyrocket’ were injured. Abstract: The new adventive species Lamprodila (Palmar) festiva (Linné, 1767) is first recorded from Slovakia from both, urban and natural habitats. The work provides exact geographical records, data on biology and host plants. All data are supported by numerous illustrations. The distribution on the territory of capital Bratislava is mapped. The paper is complemented by compilation of biological and distributional data from many other publications. In Slovakia, Lamprodila festiva is frequently found along with longhorn beetle Semanotus russicus (Fabricius, 1776), which is protected in Slovakia and was known to date only from a few sites. Key words: Lamprodila festiva, Coleoptera, Buprestidae, faunistics, Slovakia INTRODUCTION The climate change and global trading triggered massive environmental changes because of presenting great opportunity for invasive or adventive species to occupy new territories. Trees (mostly in urban areas) stressed by high temperatures or drought are getting very sensitive to new insect pests. In recent years, jewel beetles from the family Buprestidae are notoriously known for vigorous invasive potential and destructive efficiency. -

Graniczna 35, skr. poczt. 65, POLAND e-mail: [email protected] Introduction Ten years ago, as a part of my doctor’s dissertation (Hołyński 1999), I presented the first, preliminary outline of the taxonomical, zoogeographical and phylogenetical review of the genera Dicerca ESCH . and Poecilonota ESCH . Very incomplete (especially as regards Nearctic species) taxon sampling, as well as the “embrional” stage of the development of the applied phylogenetic program (MICSEQ) did not allow to avoid numerouus simplifications, poorly substantiated assumptions, and even [now] evident errors. Some of them have been corrected in the paper published six years later (Hołyński 2005b) which, however, was mainly intended as a revision of Indo-Pacific taxa and, as such, included but few Nearctic representatives of the genera; moreover, MICSEQ (“version 3.1”) was still very imperfect and hard to “operate”, leaving ample room for both inadvertent and systematic errors in phylogenetic reconstructions. Since that time, thanks to the kindness of several colleagues and museum curators, I had the opportunity to examine (and include in the “character-matrix”) almost all the [sub-]species of Dicerca ESCH . and Poecilonota ESCH . hitherto described, and also the very significantly improved (“5.2”) version of my phylogenetic program has become available, enabling me to present a new, comprehensive (including the majority of both Eurasian and American taxa) reconstruction of the evolutionary history of these genera.
