Propagation is another matter altogether. Boronias are usually propagated from stem cuttings because of difficulties in germinating seedlings. Boronia seeds have a coating that provides longevity but the coating needs to be removed before the seed will germinate. The North Shore Group of the Australian Plants Society in Sydney is funding a post graduate student to research the matter. UNSW Researcher Berin Mackenzie, as part of his PhD practical experiments, trialled the germination of seven different species of east coast boronia under various conditions mimicking field conditions. One of his aims was to determine which factors controlled germination of boronias from the soil-held seed bank. Berin’s research is on-going and it will be of great value for future management of wild populations. His results will also assist native plant growers to mimic these conditions to promote germination of boronia seeds. The by-products of Berin’s experiments were tens of petri dishes containing boronia seeds that had barely germinated. Berin kindly passed these propagules on to our The North Shore Group to grow them on in the Shadehouse. They have reached the stage of 20cm plants in early 2015. ISSN1035-7394 Number 3 April 2015 Wendy Grimm from the North Shore Group hopes to plant them into the garden area of Ku- ring-gai Wildflower Garden in autumn 2015. The Rutaceae bed has been established on the eastern slope of the Knoll Garden. The area is partly shaded by tall Eucalyptus and is adjacent to the Fern House, which is periodically watered. Large sandstone boulders and sandstone outcrops are scattered through the fenced area. Cutting-derived Boronia serrulata plants are already doing well, as are several species of Correa and Leionema. We anticipate hearing of further progress from Wendy Grimm, who has become a member of the Boronia and Allied Plants Study Group, concerning Boronia at the Kuring-gai Wildflower Gardens and of Berin Mackenzie’s Research. ISSN1035-7394 Number 3 April 2015 Pollination of Boronia and Allied Genera Wendy Grimm, Australian Plants Society North Shore Group We were photographing Boronia serrulata plants during a plant survey for NPWS in Marramarra National Park. The target species was Tetratheca glandulosa but the B. serrulata was coming into bloom and the perfume was exquisite. We had lunch on a rock surrounded by the plants. I noticed two tiny moths in the cup of one flower and took many photos from all angles. On later inspection on the computer screen I could see that the abdomen of the larger moth was inserted into the ring of anthers of the Boronia flower. Scientists at the Australian Museum passed the images on to the Heliozelidae moth family expert in Melbourne. He said that several genera in that moth family are associated with Rutaceae; including Correa, Boronia, Microcybe, Phebalium, Zieria, Philotheca and Geleznowia. The association may involve predation of the leaves, flowers and seeds and may involve pollination of the plant. The Heliozelidae study group are discovering many new and undescribed moths and are interested in receiving detailed observations of moths associated with Rutaceae plants. ISSN1035-7394 Number 3 April 2015 Self Propagation and Hybridisation of Croweas Doug Coates The Crowea genera contains only a small number of species. There is C. exalata and C. saligna from the eastern states and C. augustifolia in Western Australia. Both the flowers and leaves of C. saligna are significantly larger than those of C. exalata, but it is usually slower growing and has higher moisture requirements. C. exalata is less demanding of the growing conditions. We have grown both these species at our property at Mount Victoria in NSW. The following photographs are from the current flowering season: Figure 1 Crowea Saligna Figure 2 Crowea Exalata The narrower leaves of C.exalata are readily observable in these photographs. Less observable is that the leaves of C.saligna are larger and the flowers correspondingly larger as well. Flower colour is similar with the colour of C. exalata perhaps being slightly deeper. Differences in lighting and aspect make it difficult to represent flower colour precisely in the photographs. We have grown several examples of C. ‘Festival’ which is described in the literature as a chance hybrid of the above two species. However, it is very similar in appearance to C. exalata but the flowers are of a deeper and slightly darker colour which is difficult to illustrate in photographs. Circumstances in our garden in Mount Victoria are such that croweas readily self propagate. This year a mild summer with few hot days and regular but not terribly high rainfall has been a very good year for self propagation. A large number of new plants have appeared, ISSN1035-7394 Number 3 April 2015 particularly where shaded by eucalyptus trees. The level of hybridisation will become more apparent as the plants grow larger. The following is an example of a hybrid from a previous season: Figure 3 C. 'Mt Victoria' Hybrid This self propagated hybrid is characterised by flowers of similar size to C. saligna but perhaps of a slightly more intense colour. The leaves are similar in length but narrower than C. saligna. with a more pointed shape. What cannot be readily conveyed in a photograph is that these plants seem to display what might be referred to as hybrid vigour. They seem to be faster growing and require less moisture than C. saligna. The leaves appear to be a little darker but this could just reflect greater vigour with more photosynthesis. It would appear to resemble the registered cultivar ‘Poorinda Ecstasy’. .

Briggs & J.A. Armstr. (family Rutaceae). Summary of Conservation Assessment Zieria parrissiae is eligible for listing as Critically Endangered under Criterion B1ab(iii) (v) and B2ab (iii) (v); C2a(ii). The main reasons for the species being eligible for listing in the Critically Endangered category are i) that the species has a very highly restricted geographic range with an area of occupancy (AOO) estimated to be approximately 4 km2 based on a single 2 x 2 km grid cell, the scale recommended for assessing AOO by IUCN (2016) AND an extent of occurrence (EOO) that is also 4km2 based on a minimum convex polygon enclosing all mapped occurrences of the species, the method of assessment recommended by IUCN (2016); ii) a continuing decline is projected in area and extent and quality of habitat and the number of mature individuals due to wildfire, drought and severe browsing; and iii) there are less than 250 mature individuals and all are in one population. The Botanists Way is a promotional concept developed by the Blue Mountains Botanic Garden at Mt Tomah for interpretation displays associated with the adjacent Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area (GBMWHA). It is based on 19th century botanical exploration of areas between Kurrajong and Bell, northwest of Sydney, generally associated with Bells Line of Road, and focussed particularly on the botanists George Caley and Allan Cunningham and their connections with Mt Tomah. Based on a broader assessment of the area’s botanical history, the concept is here expanded to cover the route from Richmond to Lithgow (about 80 km) including both Bells Line of Road and Chifl ey Road, and extending north to the Newnes Plateau. The historical attraction of botanists and collectors to the area is explored chronologically from 1804 up to the present, and themes suitable for visitor education are recognised. Though the Botanists Way is focused on a relatively limited geographic area, the general sequence of scientifi c activities described - initial exploratory collecting; 19th century Gentlemen Naturalists (and lady illustrators); learned societies and publications; 20th century publicly-supported research institutions and the beginnings of ecology, and since the 1960s, professional conservation research and management - were also happening nationally elsewhere.

Conservation Advice Zieria prostrata Headland zieria Conservation Status Zieria prostrata (headland zieria) is listed as Endangered under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (Cwlth) (EPBC Act) effective from the 16 July 2000. The species was eligible for listing under the EPBC Act at that time as, immediately prior to the commencement of the EPBC Act, it was listed as Endangered under Schedule 1 of the Endangered Species Protection Act 1992 (Cwlth). Species can also be listed as threatened under state and territory legislation. For information on the listing status of this species under relevant state or territory legislation, see http://www.environment.gov.au/cgi-bin/sprat/public/sprat.pl The main factors that are the cause of the species being eligible for listing in the Endangered category are its restricted distribution, small population size. Description The headland zieria is a prostrate shrub forming mats about 0.5 m in diameter. The branches are ridged but not warted as in some other Zieria species. The leaves are paired and divided into three narrow-oval leaflets, all with blunt ends and the central one longer than the others. Both leaf-surfaces are of similar colour and are dotted with oil-glands. The flowers are small, white (pink in bud) and have four petals. The fruits are red-green and dotted with oil-glands (OEH 2014a). Zieria species are distinguished from other Australasian genera in the Rutaceae family by the combination of opposite leaves, conspicuous and 4-merous flowers, free petals, four stamens, free filaments, deeply 4-lobed disc and dry, dehiscent fruits (Armstrong, MS.).

    The UCSC/ Koala Blooms Introduction Program and Suncrest Nurseries One of our great local treasures in Santa Cruz County is--and has been for many years--the Arboretum at the University of California, Santa Cruz. I had the pleasure in the 1970s of watching its fledgling collection of Australian plants grow from an odd menagerie under foil-covered bottles to a beautiful public garden. Within a few years it became the most extensive collection of Australian native plants outside Australia itself. The process involved tireless work by the Director, Ray Collett and an enthusiastic, at that point mostly student staff, plus generous cooperation by Rodger Elliot, one of the great plant collectors and distributors of Australia. One of the side benefits of this arrangement was that many of the acquisitions were not merely random representatives of their species, but outstanding horticultural selections. Dr. Collett was notably generous with local nurseryfolk interested in giving these plants a try, and the Arboretum became--as it remains to this day--one of the great sources for new ornamental plant material in California. There was only one thing missing from this picture: Income for the garden to pursue its work in new plant research and introductions. Individual nurseries and the Monterey Bay Chapter of the California Association of Nurseries and Garden Centers have offered significant support. But as the sheer size of the Arboretum and its projects grew, with only modest increases in funding by the University, the quest for funding became an urgent matter. One small piece of the solution was conceived jointly by Rodger Elliot and others at Koala Blooms in Australia and the staff at the Arboretum: A new introduction scheme under which some of the most promising acquisitions from Australia are offered to cooperating nurseries for propagation, and a substantial royalty is paid on each plant sold.

    This Conservation Advice was approved by the Minister / Delegate of the Minister on: 1/10/2008 Approved Conservation Advice (s266B of the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999) Approved Conservation Advice for Zieria obovata This Conservation Advice has been developed based on the best available information at the time this Conservation Advice was approved; this includes existing plans, records or management prescriptions for this species. Description Zieria obovata, Family Rutaceae, is a small, diffuse, hairy shrub to 1 m. Leaves are opposite, on very short stalks, and with three leaflets. Leaflets are dark green and almost hairless on the upper surface (except on the midrib), light green and hairy with simple hairs on the lower surface, and lack tubercles. Leaflet margins are strongly curved or curled towards the lower surface. Inflorescences are in axils and are longer than the subtending leaves, with 1–3 cream to pale pink flowers 5–6 mm in diameter. Fruit have occasional pubescence on the apex, and are gland-dotted. Zieria minutiflora is closely related to Zieria obovata but has densely hairy leaves and inflorescences are usually shorter than the subtending leaves (Armstrong, 2002; Duretto & Forster, 2007). Conservation Status Zieria obovata is listed as vulnerable. This species is eligible for listing as vulnerable under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (Cwlth) (EPBC Act) as, prior to the commencement of the EPBC Act, it was listed as vulnerable under Schedule 1 of the Endangered Species Protection Act 1992 (Cwlth). Zieria obovata is also listed as vulnerable under the Nature Conservation Act 1992 (Queensland) under the name Zieria aspalathoides var.

Ecology of Pyrmont peninsula iii Executive summary City Council’s ‘Sustainable Sydney 2030’ initiative ‘is a vision for the sustainable development of the City for the next 20 years and beyond’. It has a largely anthropocentric basis, that is ‘viewing and interpreting everything in terms of human experience and values’(Macquarie Dictionary, 2005). The perspective taken here is that Council’s initiative, vital though it is, should be underpinned by an ecocentric ethic to succeed. This latter was defined by Aldo Leopold in 1949, 60 years ago, as ‘a philosophy that recognizes[sic] that the ecosphere, rather than any individual organism[notably humans] is the source and support of all life and as such advises a holistic and eco-centric approach to government, industry, and individual’(http://dictionary.babylon.com). Some relevant considerations are set out in Part 1: General Introduction. In this report, Pyrmont peninsula - that is the communities of Pyrmont and Ultimo – is considered as a microcosm of the City of Sydney, indeed of urban areas globally. An extensive series of early views of the peninsula are presented to help the reader better visualise this place as it was early in European settlement (Part 2: Early views of Pyrmont peninsula).
