TORII STATION, Okinawa – It was four years ago when a Japanese teenager discovered that a memorial to one of the U.S. Army’s greatest leaders had been left unmaintained and just sitting near a bush in Itoman City, Okinawa. The memorial is in honor of Lt. Gen. Simon Bolivar Buckner, the commanding officer of Tenth Army. Buckner was killed by enemy artillery fire at the site on June 18, 1945, three days before the island was declared secured.. Takeshi Kinjo, a local Eagle Scout with Troop 101 of the Greater Okinawa District and a freshman at Okinawa International University, has been voluntarily cleaning the monument and cutting grass, trimming trees and raking and bagging leaves near the site once a month since 2006.
