Day 1 Saturday 28th February

The leader met with the group at the Windhoek International airport for a travelling day to Waterberg. We departed Windhoek airport at 14:40. We arrived at Waterberg at 18:45. Dinner was at 19:45.

Some wildlife seen along the way included: 2 Tawny Eagles, Brown Snake Eagle, many Steppe Buzzards, Eurasian Rollers, Pale Chanting Goshawk, Swainsons and Red-billed Francolin, Red-backed Shrikes, Glossy and Burchells Starling, White and Marabou Storks, Yellow-billed Kites, and Black-shouldered Kites. We heard a Barn Owl and Freckled before dinner. 340 km travelled.

Day 2 Sunday 1st March

We had a pre-breakfast walk at 07:00 and heard both Rockrunner as well as Hartlaubs Francolin on the morning walk. Wildlife seen included Alpine, Bradfields, Palm, Little and White-rumped Swifts, Monteiro’s and Damara Hornbills, Purple Roller, Ruppels Parrot, White-bellied and Marico Sunbird,. Puffback Shrike, Grey-backed Cameroptera, Blue Waxbill, Booted Eagle, and Whalberg’s Eagle.

Left Waterberg at around 10:00. We saw Dwarf Mongoose and Damara Dik Dik before we left the bungalows as well as Ground Squirrel, Shaft-tailed and Paradise Wydah’s, Rattling and Tinkling Cisticolas, Eurasian Bee- eaters and Rollers, Purple Rollers, and Lilac-breasted Rollers along the road, seeing also Black-shouldered Kite and Steppe Buzzard here too.

We had lunch in Outjo, Ombinda Lodge and saw Red-faced Mousebirds, Lesser Masked Weaver, and Paradise Flycatcher. There was heavy torrential rain along the road to Etosha. species seen today included Black- chested Snake-eagle, Abdims Stork, Blue Cranes, Kori Bustard, Southern Black Korhaan, Marico Flycatcher, Monotonous Lark displaying, Double-banded Courser, and both White-faced and African Scops Owl. Other species seen were Springbok, Black-faced Impala, Black-backed Jackal, Oryx, Red Hartebeest, Wildebeest, Leopard Tortoise and Flap-necked Chameleon. 360 km travelled.

Day 3 Monday 2nd March

Today we had an early morning game drive from Halali at sunrise from 7 to 8:30am, followed by breakfast, and later a game drive from 9:30 to 13:00. We then had lunch followed by an afternoon game drive at 15:30.

Species of note were: One Spotted Hyena, Springbok, Oryx, Black-faced Impala, Greater Kudu, Steenbok, Giraffe, Red Hartebeest, Wildebeest, and Black-backed Jackal. included Pearl Spotted Owl, Cinnamon- breasted Bunting, Violet-eared Waxbill, Yellow-bellied Eremolela, Crowned Lapwing, Blacksmith Lapwing, Grey-headed and Great Sparrows, African Hawk Eagle, Black-chested Snake Eagle, Lapped-faced, White-headed and White-backed Vultures, Cape and Red-billed Teal, Egyptian Geese, Purple, Lilac-breasted and Eurasian Rollers, Eurasian Bee-eaters, Red-footed Falcons, Greater Kestrel, Rufous-napped, Sabota, Spike-heeled and Monotonous Larks, and Violet-tipped Courser. 130 km travelled.

Day 4 Tuesday 3rd March

Breakfast was at 07:30. Then we drove to Namutoni, Fischer’s Pan, and had a late lunch at Namutoni. We returned to Halali at 19:00 and dinner was at 20:00.

Bird species seen today were African Scops Owl, Lapped faced, and White backed Vultures, Double banded Coursers, Laughing, Cape Turtle and Namaqua Doves, Marico Flycatcher, Violet eared Waxbill, Blue Waxbill, Red billed Buffalo Weaver, White browed Sparrow Weaver, Yellow billed, Red billed and Grey Hornbills, Great and Grey headed Sparrows, Eurasion and Swallow tailed Bee eaters, Purple, Eurasion and Lilac breasted Rollers, Egyptian, South African Shell duck, Red billed and Cape Teal, Cone billed Duck, Green shank, Wood Sandpiper, Glossy Ibis, African Spoonbill, Ruff, Black winged Stilts, Avocet, Crowned and Blacksmith Lapwing, Kitlit’z Plover, Scimitar, African Hoopoe, Marabou Stork, Tawny Eagle, Yellow billed Kite, Steppe Buzzard. Violet Woodhoopoe, Pied Babblers, White crowned Shrikes, Scaly feathered Finch, and Red headed Finch.

Mammal species were Springbok, Burchells Zebra, Wildebeest, Red Hartebeest, Steenbok, Oryx, Greater Kudu, Giraffe, 30 African Elephants, a Caracal crossing the road, and Lions - one male, two lionesses and 4 cubs next to the road to end our day. 240km travelled.

Day 5 Wednesday 4th March

We had a morning walk at 07:00. We saw African Golden Oriole, Red billed, Grey and Yellow billed Hornbills, Fork tailed Drongo, and Scops Owl.

We then had breakfast, packed up and left. En route we saw Eurasian Hobby, Yellow bellied Eremomela, Violet and Blue Waxbills, Red capped, Sabota and Rufous napped Larks, Painted Snipe, Springbok, Steenbok, Zebra, Wildebeest, Red hartebeest, Warthog, Black faced Impala, Damara Dik dik, and Giraffe.

We stopped for lunch at Namutoni before our one and a half hour drive to Uris Lodge. Further species seen after lunch included Yellow billed, Red billed and Grey Hornbills, Wahlbergs Eagle, Carp’s Tit, Goldenbreasted Bunting, and Spotted Flycatcher. 230km travelled.

Day 6 Thursday 5th March

We had an early morning coffee and tea at 06:45 followed by a bird walk around the gardens.

Species seen here were Golden breasted Bunting, Pied Barbet, Grey headed Sparrow, Icterine Warbler, Brown crowned Tchagra, Paradise Flycatcher, Red eyed Bulbul, Bru bru, Puffback Shrike, Grey Lourie, Grey Hornbill, Eurasion Swallow, Black throated Canary and Eurasion Oriole.

We left the lodge at 08:30 and spent some time in Tsumeb as we had to have the radiator of the vehicle flushed due to a lot of mud that had been picked up in Etosha. We visited the local museum and had lunch at the Minnen Hotel. En route to our next accommodation we saw Palm, Little and White rumped Swift, Barn Swallow, House Martin, Red breasted Swallow, Red eyed Bulbul, Lilac breasted and Purple Rollers, and Swallow tailed and Southern Carmine Bee eaters.

We arrived at the lodge at 18:00 and had welcome drinks on the deck overlooking the river. African Jacana, Reed Cormorants, Allan’s Gallinule, Chacma Baboons, Springbok and Banded Mongoose were seen later in the day. 370km travelled.

Day 7 Friday 6th March

We left Kaisosi River Lodge today and went to Nunda Lodge. We met on the deck overlooking the river at 07:00 and saw Osprey, Allans Gallinule, Pied Kingfisher, Giant Kingfisher, Golden and Village Weavers, Red Bishop, Magpie Shrike, Little Sparrowhawk, Grey backed Cameroptera, Hartlaubs Babbler, Levialents Cuckoo, Fork tailed Drongo, Open billed Stork, Cattle and Little Egrets, African Jacana, Black Crake, Reed Cormorant, Squaco Heron, Rufous bellied Heron, Greater Swamp Warbler.

Breakfast was at 08:30 and we departed the lodge at 09:30. En route we stopped at some ponds and found Black Heron, Great white Egret, Little Egret, Black crowned Heron, Double banded Plover, Burchells Starling, Common Sandpiper, Blue Waxbills, Grey headed Sparrows, Forktailed Drongo, Blue checked and Southern Carmine Bee-eaters.

Along the road to Nunda we saw Bateleur, Pale and Dark Chanting Goshawks, African Goshawk, Black and Yellowbilled Kites, Steppe Buzzards, Marico flycatcher, Greater Blue eared Starling, Green winged Pytilia, and Red backed Shrike. We also saw a Slender Mongoose and many Flap necked Chameleons.

We arrived at Nunda for lunch at 13:30. Overlooking the river from the wooden deck were darters, hippos, Marico and Collared Sunbirds, Jacobin Cuckoo, Brown Firefinch, Blue Waxbill, and Cattle Egrets.

We enjoyed an afternoon boat cruise at 16:30 and saw Green backed Heron, African Fish Eagle, Reed Cormorant, African Darter, Pied Kingfisher, Pied Wagtails, Hartlaubs Babblers, Shikra, Blue checked Bee eaters, African Mourning Dove, Red eyed Dove, Cape Turtle and Laughing Doves, White faced Duck, Spurwinged Goose and Pygmy Goose. At one stage we were very close to hippo and a Water Monitor. 230 km travelled.

Day 8 Saturday 7th March

We got up early this morning for coffee and muffins and departed the lodge at 06:45. During our game drive in Mahangu Park we saw Elephant, Roan, Waterbuck, Red Lechwe, Impala, Kudu, Giraffe, Sable, and Warthog.

Birds included Pygmy Geese, Spurwinged Geese, Cone billed Duck, African Jacana, Common Sandpiper, Ruff, Black checked and Blue Waxbills, Crimson breasted Shrike, Red backed Shrike, Neddicky, Rattling Cisticola, Buffy Pipit, Cape Wagtail, Rufous naped Lark, Burnt necked Eremomela, Marico Sunbird, Marico Flycatcher, Brubru, Chinspot Batis, Cut throat Finch, African Paradise Flycatcher, Mourning, Cape Turtle, Namaqua, Red eyed Doves, Steppe Buzzard, Yellow-billed Kite, Pin-tailed, Shaft-tailed and Paradise Wydahs, and Willow Warbler.

We had a coffee at 2pm and later on the drive to the Mahangu Park we spotted an African Wild Cat! Shortly after entering the park we saw Zebra, Waterbuck, Wildebeest and Red Lechwe.

Whilst looking at Collared Pratincole, Lloyd spotted a Leopard across the grass plains and on the edge of the bush line. I jumped out of the vehicle as I had no line of vision and then saw a second Leopard much closer to the vehicle! We spent the next 3 hours with the two Leopards. The female came just a few metres away from the car, crossing the road and disappearing into the tall grass. We next spotted her about 200 metres up the road and a group of about 40 Red Lechwe were also following her every move. They were snorting their alarm at her and slowly following her all the time. Quite some interaction! She then got up and moved into the bush. She reappeared about 300 metres away from us and climbed into a large tree and lay watching both us as well as the Red Lechwe that were grazing not too far away.

Whilst watching the Leopards we saw Saddlebilled Stork, African Fish Eagle, Grey Heron, Goliath Heron, Squaco Heron, Collared Pratincole, Grey rumped Swallow, Barn, Mosque and Lesser Striped Swallow around the water. 100 km travelled.

Day 9 Sunday 8th March

We drove from Nunda to Xaru Lodge today. We had to cross the border into Botswana and had lunch at Drotsky’s Cabins where we left our vehicle and continued to our overnight accommodation by boat on the Okavango River. Barn Swallows, House Martin and Sand Martin were spotted over the river after breakfast.

Bird species seen today included Red breasted, Mosque, White throated and Lesser striped Swallows, Woodland, Malachite and Pied Kingfishers, African Darter, Reed Cormorant, African Marsh Harrier, Yellowbilled Kite, Whalbergs Eagle, Longtoed, Crowned and Blacksmith Lapwing, Brown throated, Lesser masked and Golden Weaver., White browed Robin Chat, Terrestrial Brownbul, Yellow bellied Brownbul, Purple and Lilac breasted Rollers, Carmine, Little, Blue cheeked and White fronted Bee eaters, Black eyed Bulbul, Laughing, Mourning, Greenspotted and Red eyed Doves, Green Pigeon, African Paradise Flycatcher, Hartlaub’s and Arrowmarked Babblers, Red billed and Swainson’s Francolin, Magpie Shrike, Crimson breasted Shrike, Red backed Shrike and Swamp Bou bou.

Other species included Hippo, Impala, Vervet Monkeys and Tree Squirrels. We did a walk from Xaru, but had to turn around due to a heavy rain shower. 60 km travelled.

Day 10 Monday 9th March

We travelled today from Xaru to Zambezi Lodge, Katima Mulilo. Breakfast was followed by a boat ride back to Drotsky’s.

Bird species of note were Pygmy Geese, Pied and Woodland Kingfisher, Giant kingfisher, Cattle Egrets, Eurasian, White fronted, Little and Blue cheeked Bee eaters, African Marsh Harrier, Hadeda Ibis, Bonnets Woodpecker, Crested Barbet, Blue Waxbills, Brown Firefinch, Fork tailed Drongo, Red and Yellow billed Oxpeckers, Bateleur, Tawny and Brown Snake Eagles, Yellow billed and Black Kites, Purple and Lilac breasted Rollers, Ground Hornbills, Yellow billed and Grey Hornbills, Greater blue eared, Burchells and Meves Starlings.

Mammals seen today were Greater Kudu, Impala, Reed buck, Sititunga, Roan, Sable Antelope, Tsessebe, Common Duiker, and Hippo. 400 km’s travelled.

Day 11 Tuesday 10th March

A morning walk around the grounds at 07:00 yielded Bronze Manikin, Blue Waxbills, Spotted and Mouse coloured Flycatchers, Darter, Reed Cormorants, Great White Egrets, Rufous bellied Herons, Golden Weaver, Fork tailed Drongo, African Golden Oriole, Eurasion, Blue cheeked Bee eaters, Red billed Hornbill, Grey Hornbill, African Fish Eagle, Bateleur, Steppe Eagle, Martial Eagle, Dickinson’s Kestrel, Glossy Ibis, Hadeda Ibis, Blacksmith and Long toed Lapwing, Black eyed Bulbul, White backed Vulture and Marabou Stork, Open- billed Stork and Yellowbilled Kite. We also saw Sable Antelope, and Chacma Baboons.

We arrived at Kubu Lodge for lunch. We had tea and coffee followed by an afternoon drive at 4pm to the floodplains. Bird species seen included Yellow billed Stork, Openbilled Stork, Hammerkop, African Spoonbill, Black Heron, Little Egret, Jamesons Firefinch, Blue Waxbill, Brown throated and Lesser masked Weavers, Marabou Storks, Blue cheeked and Carmine Bee eaters, Black chested Snake Eagle, Wood Sandpipers, Red eyed, Laughing and Cape Turtle Doves, Paradise Wydah, and Pied Kingfisher. Mammals seen were Chacma Baboons, Vervet Monkeys, Impala, Warthog, Elephant and Bushbuck.

Day 12 Wednesday 11th March

Our morning walk was at 07:00 and we were able to add two new bird species added to our list, Tropical Bou bou and Eastern bearded Robin.

Breakfast was at 07:30, and our boat trip was at 09:00 into the Chobe National Park. We saw Bushbuck on the property before we left and also Vervet Monkeys. Elephant, Hippo, Impala, Red Lechwe and Puku were seen on the river cruise as well as Crocodiles and Water Monitors. Birds seen were Black heron, Great white Egret, Little Egret, Egyptian Geese, Pygmy Geese, Spurwing Goose, Marabou Storks, White backed and Hooded Vultures, Woodland, Pied and Malachite Kingfishers, Eurasian, Red throated, Blue cheeked and Carmine Bee eaters, African Fish Eagle, Bateleur Eagle, Red bishop, Reed Cormorant, African Darter, Wire tailed Swallows, and Squaco Heron.

We returned to the lodge at 12:30, had lunch at 13:00 and departed for our afternoon cruise at 15:00. Mammals here included Elephant, Hippo, Impala, Vervet Monkeys, Chacma Baboons, Southern Giraffe, and Greater Kudu. New birds for the afternoon were Grey hooded Kingfisher and Sacred Ibis.

Day 13 Thursday 12th March

Breakfast was at 07:30, and we departed at 09:00 for our final border crossing, leaving Botswana and entering Zambia. Arrived for lunch at the Waterfront where some booked activities for the next day. We had stunning views of the mighty Zambezi from here, with the spray of the falls very visible in the distance. We also visited the Victoria Falls. Only two new bird species were seen today, these were Black Swift and Red winged Starling.

Day 14 Friday 13th March

Lloyd and David went off on a walking safari in the Mosi o Tunya Park at 06:45. The rest of us met for breakfast at 8:00. David and Nicola did a helicopter flight and then a lion walk. The rest of us went into town for some shopping. New for the morning were Black Flycatcher, White crowned Plover, and Buffalo! During lunch we saw an African Finfoot – we watch this female for at least half an hour ……. fantastic views for everyone in the group!

Day 15 Saturday 14th March

This morning we had a pre breakfast walk around the gardens. We added two new species to our list; Black collared Barbet and Wellow breasted Apalis. Breakfast was at 08:00. We departed the lodge at 09:00 to visit the Livingstone Museum and then went on towards the airport.

A total of 40 mammal species and 308 bird species were seen as well as several reptile species. Good views of most birds were seen by the whole group. I would like to thank the entire group for their assistance, patience, understanding as well as friendship throughout the safari. We experienced the most rain Namibia has had in many years. We endured this, but still managed to see many birds, and had lovely views of two leopards - thank you. I do hope to see you all back in Southern Africa. “Hakuna Matata”!!
