He is the third Islanders volleyball coach in program history and in the spring of 2016, Graystone will head the first Islanders Beach Volleyball team. Graystone improved his team’s win total in each of his first four seasons on the Island, culminating with the 2013 season, which was a historic season for the Islanders. The team finished with a 20-12 record, including a school-best 13-5 record in Southland Conference play. The Islanders also made history by advancing to the semifinals of the conference tournament for the first time. In the last three years, Graystone has collected a 60-39 record, including a 36-16 record in Southland play. In 2014, the Islanders made their third consecutive appearance and fourth overall trip to the Southland Tournament. For the second straight year the Islanders advanced to the semifinals while finishing with a 19-16 record, including an 11-5 record in conference play. The squad set a school record in 2012 with a 21-11 mark. The Islanders won 12 Southland matches and finished in third place in the con- ference, both first-time accomplishments for Texas A&M - Corpus Christi. Since taking over the program, the Islanders have improved their national RPI by 192 spots, making them the most improved Division I team in the country over that time. During the 2011 season, the team improved to 13-20, a one-match improvement from the 2010 season record of 12-18. The 2011 team won five Southland Conference matches, tying the Southland win total from 2010. In season two, Graystone’s team improved to 12-18 on the year, a three match improvement from his first campaign and the first double-digit win season since 2004. In 2010, the team also won five Southland Conference matches, the second-highest total in school history. In his first year, the Islanders improved by five wins from the previous year. Prior to coming to the Island, Graystone spent 10 seasons as the head coach at West Texas A&M where he posted a 315-61 record and became the winningest coach in West Texas A&M volleyball history. His .837 winning percentage was the third-highest among active NCAA Division II head coaches and he reached 300 victories faster than any other coach in the division’s history. He reached 100 wins in 106 games making him the quickest coach at the time in any NCAA sport or division to reach the century mark in wins. He was named the Lone Star Conference Coach of the Year five times and the AVCA Southwest Region Coach of the Year on four occasions. At West Texas A&M, he guided the Lady Buffs to Lone Star Conference crowns in eight of his 10 seasons and to five NCAA regional titles. He mentored 16 All-Americans and one Division II National Player of the Year in 1999. His 2001 team was ranked No. 1 for seven weeks, while his 2002 team held the top spot for five weeks. In 2003, his team set an NCAA standard with 77 conference wins in a row. Before becoming the head coach, Graystone was an assistant coach for the Lady Buffs and was part of the coaching staff that won the NCAA Division II Championship in 1997. He also served as the program director for the Amarillo Junior Olympic Volleyball Club. He began his career as a head coach at Waggoner and Ballard High Schools in Louisville. He earned an M.S. in exercise physiology from the University of Louisville in 1996 after graduating with a B.S. in Health Sciences with

We always want to be positive. However, injuries do occur. Catastrophic injuries can, and unfortunately do, happen. It is this very reason that schools and coaches have trusted the medical professional assistance of athletic trainers. The importance of having an athletic trainer was demonstrated at Pittsburg ISD. Pittsburg had a rare injury during a Junior High game in which an athlete came to the sideline holding his stomach. He sustained a ruptured spleen and bruised pancre- as. The athlete was seen by the athletic trainer and referred immediately to the paramedic on duty. The mother was insisting that he was ok and wanted to take him home, which is when the athletic trainer intervened and insisted that they take him to the emergency room immediately. The mother was hes- itant and was very resistant but the athletic trainer was very knowledgeable on emergency injuries and demanded that the athlete be taken to the hospital at once.
