2019 ANNUAL REPORT 90th Annual Report of the Hampton Rovers FC

CLUB HISTORY..

Hampton Rovers Amateur Football Club first started as an organised activity for the First Hampton Scout Group by Norm (Boss) James in 1918. The Scout Group’s main theme was to promote football as a team game and encourage self-confidence, self-control and a desire to improve a player’s ability. This is similar to the current philosophy used by the club today.

Initially, games were played socially against other Scout Groups and then in the Association Sub-district competition. The club as we know it today was established in 1929 and as the incentive to play a higher standard became apparent, another competition was sought and in 1933, Hampton Rovers was accepted into the Metropolitan Amateur Football competition, which later became the Victorian Amateur Football Association.

In 1963 the club moved from its Ludstone Street ground to the corner of David Street and Bluff Road, our present home. In 2002 this ground was formally named the “Boss James Reserve” in memory of the club’s founder.

In 1979 the Hampton Rovers Football Club started its youth policy by introducing junior teams in an effort to provide an extensive link with the local community and to provide a development scheme for the senior side. The club now fields 28 junior teams in the South Metro Junior Football League, with over 600 boys and girls.

The Rovers have won nine senior premierships and were the first club to win the flag in each of the four senior VAFA sections when it won the ‘A Section’ premiership in 1951. Nine Reserve and 10 Under 19 premierships have also been won by the Rovers, which celebrated its 90th year in 2019.

TREASURER’S REPORT.

It has been a privilege for me to work with so many people who volunteer and contribute to the Football club to ensure it's on field success. I would like to thank Kate Robb for all her help and contribution as Junior Treasurer and Board Member her advice and support throughout the year has been superb. The co-operation and unity with the Junior club operating together strengthens the club and overall makes it more successful.

In 2019 after expenses of $290K the club has reported a profit of $53K. This represents a profit of 18% on the turnover, after a couple of years of small losses it is good to be back in the black.

Summary of the financial results for the year. • Junior and Senior memberships all exceeded 2018 results reflecting increased membership and collections by $27,571. • Revenue raised from Fundraising was stronger than in 2018 with a successful 90/40 anniversary. • Major sponsors remained strong and in line with prior years however there was a drop off smaller sponsors this is an opportunity in 2020 • Merchandise was well managed and made a profit of $15K. • Catering and Bar income up on last year whilst overall costs were down providing a profit of $34K. • Administration and utility expenses–were all controlled and down on 2018. • Overall playing expenses were down on last year, this was due to strong control of costs with $8K being saved on playing equipment, whilst medical costs were managed, and a lower number of finals games were played by the seniors.

The club is in a very sound financial position and as a committee we will continue to be accountable by reducing unnecessary costs and generating revenue to meet the ongoing annual expenses. The cash position of club remains healthy thanks to the generous donation by Peter Streets estate back in 2015. The aim of the committee is to maintain Peter’s donation and not use it for operating costs.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our sponsors throughout the year, without them the football club cannot continue to be the success it is. The Roverians have been a constant support and contribute to the club’s success. Alison Witherow has done an excellent job to ensure our accounts are up to date and accurate. The Board, Junior and Senior committees, and numerous volunteers have continued to work at ensuring that the financial position of the club remains strong for the future.

SENIOR PRESIDENT’S REPORT.

What a year 2019 turned out to be!

We celebrated our 90th anniversary with a sold-out event at the Brighton Town Hall with special guests Ross Smith, Angus Brayshaw & .

After promotion to Premier C, our senior side maintained its place for 2020 and the reserves were semi finalists.

The under 19s were simply magnificent in the Grand Final against Glen Eira/McKinnon and thoroughly deserved the Division 2 premiership.

Our Senior Women’s team had a brilliant season and just fell short in the Grand Final, well done ladies.

The thirds finished middle of the road and provided great back-up for the reserves when we had so many players unavailable.

I have so many people to thank and to do so individually is not possible.

So a huge thank you to the following: committee, coaches, players, trainers, canteen & bar staff, team managers, time keepers, goal umpires, boundary umpires and any volunteers who assisted us in so many ways.

Lachlan Robertson is stepping down after three years as treasurer, as well as Anton Duddy as reserves coach and also Paul Curry as our Women’s coach - thank you all for your commitment to the club.

Buxton Real Estate Sandringham once again were our major sponsors and have been magnificent contributors to our club over a long period of time, THANK YOU.

To all sponsors and club members, we are very appreciative of your support and sincerely hope we can have you on board in 2020.

Thank you to the Roverians - your support is crucial and is much appreciated.

After the disappointment of 2018 Grand Final loss, 2019 saw an opportunity to test ourselves and reinstate our club as a deserved member of the Premier sections.

With the retirement and long-term injury flowing over into 2019, it was always going to be a challenge - and that it was. Using 51 players, 25 of which played less than 4 games, only 3 playing every game, continuity was a challenge.

The overwhelming positive was that it allowed us to provide opportunity to new faces and to those that had previously found themselves in the 20-26 ranked places. For me and the other coaches, to see the development of players such as Tim Jones, Corey Jones, and Joel Melnjak was a huge positive. To be able to blood some under 19s into the senior group – Harry DeWolf, Max Coughlin, Chris Perkins, and Blake Bergman, plus the NAB18 players – Jacob Gray, Sam Seach and Ross Sklavenitis, sets the club up for future success.

Overall, we found that Premier C is a tough division, but one we can compete in providing we train harder, make ourselves available to succeed and continue to be selfless to the cause. Our coaching department is committed to this, so why not enjoy the ride.

I’d like to thank Peter O’Dea and John Cesario as my senior assistants. Both have been extremely important in the direction we are wanting to travel. In particular, Peter being knew to the club, his support, on, and off the field, with his tactical knowledge has been huge for myself and I am sure the players. To Peter Clements for his work on the magnet board and also providing opposition analysis. To the various players who helped whilst injured – Wheels, Manno, Clemo, Pav, Carni, Flowers and Jacko… you were all very much appreciated.

Thank you to the administration – Jamie Stanfield for the power of work, Nashy, Fred, Cam, Dean and the senior committee. The trainers – Ainslie and her team.

Congratulations to the award winners. A huge effort by James Prosser to win his first B&F. This is a testament to his attitude, work ethic and desire to be better. To Daniel Corp for r/up. A professional preparer and a leave nothing behind to have success attitude. Well done to you!

I look forward to continuing in 2020 knowing that if we get it right, that there is a huge opportunity to rise up the ladder very quickly.

Our goal as a coaching group when I took on the role 3 years ago was to improve on a couple of areas, but in particular, culture. The focus was to bring back the enjoyment factor, a winning culture and to see continued improvement in the players & build some depth for the seniors. I feel like we have ticked those boxes and we leave the 2019 season set up for success in the coming years.

We got off to a fantastic start to the season and at the half way point we were 7 -2 setting us up for a real crack at playing finals & ideally a crack at the top 2. Unfortunately, the middle part to our season there where a large amount of availabilities and we somehow negotiated are way around that finishing 3rd on the ladder which was a credit to the side.

The semi- Final was a real hard-fought contest, fronting up against Ormond (again) who are a very good opponent & have been the bench mark in reserve grade footy over the last few years. The boys didn’t leave anything out on the ground and as a coaching group & club we couldn’t be prouder of the group, unfortunately, we just come up short at the end of the day.

There were plenty of positives and highlights throughout the year, and a lot to build on going into 2020 The players are a fantastic group to coach, it didn’t seem to matter who pulled the jumper on week to week, they were able to execute the game plan and play a brand of footy that Hampton Rovers wanted to play week in and week out.

Award winners: B & F: Jessie Lovig Runner up: Jessie Donald 3rd Best & Fairest: Rory Lynch Most Consistent: Jack Daley Most Improved: Sam Taylor

Like every season, there are so many people to thank. A special thanks to our team leaders, in particular the captain Nick Jewell & vice-captain Nick Jackson who definitely lead from the front & had lot to do with the side’s performance this season. And very big thank you to my assistant coach Tim Wilson, who was a great support, I couldn’t have done it without you.

Thank you to all the volunteers and in particular Jamie Stanfield, Ken Duddy, James (Boundary umpire) & the support of the committee, who do an amazing and sometimes thankless job, in particular Nashy who has led from the front.

Finally, I would like to thank the other coaches Quonny, Pete, Sam, Cuz, Johnny & Will, for all their support throughout this season.

Looking for to seeing the continued improvement from the group and hopefully take it a couple of games deeper next season.

Go Rovers!

The thirds had an interesting season in 2019 with numbers varying from week to week. After making finals in 2018 we lost our best and fairest and second best and fairest for 2019 however we had a good strong base of younger guys join the club. Due to the Under 19’s having strong numbers early in the season saw the Thirds playing a number of the young guys who often got in the best players each week.

We started off with a strong win in round 1 defeating Chadstone by 46 points but with numbers shrinking after round 1 we went down to St Mary’s Salesian by 55 points who ended up being the 2019 premiers. Round 3 saw us lose to finalists UHS-VU by 20 goals with even less players and with several guys playing their first game of footy.

By round 11 we had won a couple of games and were so short we called for the 98 premiership players to help out with Stephen Anderson, Drew Anderson & Cameron McGregor all playing down at Ludstone street. We also called on an old under 19’s player Rob “Tosty” Tost who played his first game for 30 years with a YouTube video produced.

Just when you thought numbers couldn’t get any worse, we had approximately 34 players across all 3 teams unavailable. We called on Andy Devola to play his first game ever, Andy was very emotional before the game but managed to play a good first game and got a good handball to one of our players. I’m sure his dad Dommo would have been looking down on Andy an been proud of him for representing the club he loved. Unfortunately, we had to forfeit round 14 as we only had 12 players. The week after we continued to struggle with numbers but pulled off a great victory out at Parade College winning by 6 points after being down by 12 points with 10 minutes to go. Henry Brayshaw saved the day with 3 of his mates helping us field a team for the day.

Round 16 was our last game for the year, and we were up against fourth placed UHS-VU who beat us earlier in the season by 20 goals. As the seniors and reserves managed to get some players back this helped the thirds fielding our best team since round 1. We managed to beat UHS-VU by 10 goals which made it a 30-goal turnaround from round 2.

Overall the season saw us finish 6th out of 10th with North Brunswick pulling out of the competition. We only missed the four by one game and percentage. The positive take from this was given we stick together as a team / club and have a better run with injuries we have the ability to beat anyone on our day.

I would also like to thank David “Charlie” Anderson for all his help throughout the year and my nephew Baily Peace for his help when he wasn’t working in the canteen.

Trophy Winners Best & Fairest – Ash Fisher (also runner up in comp goal kicking with 36 goals in 9 games – winner 40 goals) Second Best & Fairest – Henry Brayshaw Most Consistent – Bashgen Bloomfield Best Team Player – Chris Ellison Most Determined – Luke Morcom

Captains – Tom Youl, Vice-Captain – Lachy Edgar, Dept Vice Captain – Jesse Rees

Finally, I would like to thank all the players who played this year and helped out with bringing some of their friends when we were short. Also, the under 19’s who also helped out and the older guys who also pulled on the Green & Gold to prevent us from forfeiting. Let’s all stick together at this great club and welcome all the new guys who are too old for under 19’s next year and work on making the finals.

See you all in 2020.

From the outset of the 2019 season, our primary goal was for the boys to have fun and enjoy playing good football with their mates. That goal was well and truly achieved this year.

The boys are to be commended for their efforts this season, turning up to training consistently and always with a good attitude.

After a rewarding season, with 13 wins and five losses, we finished second on the ladder with Glen Eira on top. We lost to this side three times during the year including one Semi, yet we persisted and came out on top after a stellar effort in the Grand Final.

It’s no secret that the highlight of the year would be taking home the Premiership. Everything the boys trained for fell into place in those last quarters, they performed with elite pressure and skills to demolish Glen Eira despite all odds, and I was the proudest coach.

Award winners: B & F: Max Coughlin (McGregor Medal) Runner up B & F: Ben Marron Third Place B & F: Max Van der Straaten Most Determined: Cameron Morris Best Team Man: Liam O’Driscoll (Mark Johannsen Memorial Trophy)

A massive thanks to our team manager, Miranda Marron, Will Walker our assistant coach, Benji Audige our board man, our stats man, Mitch Bowles, and our runner, Will Morris. This season wouldn’t have been what it was without all your help.

Finally, I want to congratulate and thank every one of the U19’s boys for a terrific season, it was an absolute pleasure to be their coach and I hope to see them back at Rovers next year.

What an enjoyable year! After 2018, when we failed to win a game, 2019 was nearly the perfect rebound. We finished third after the home and away, we then won the first semi-final and the preliminary final to play off in the Grand Final. In the Grand Final we were two points down at three quarter time, but unfortunately we fell short. In saying that, Preston played well when it counted and deserved the win. I was especially pleased that we won two finals and it gives the playing group confidence going into 2020. Pre-season training started in November and at the start of the practice games we were touch and go as to whether we would have enough players. We battled on and in the end had 29 players on our list. Congratulations to Sam and the Under 19’s for winning the Grand Final. I watched a number of games and was impressed with their game plan and their ball movement. As someone from the outside they looked really well organised and well coached. I would like to thank Gary Nash, Tony Naumoff, Jamie Stanfield and all the committee for their help and support. I would especially like to thank Jamie who, after a full season with the seniors, stepped up as team manager during the finals. To our three leaders, Bianca, Zara and Chloe Miriams thanks for your support and for always being positive. Thanks to Anthony Quon and all the coaches for their help during the year and for letting us train at The Boss when the ground at Castlefield was in disrepair. Thanks to the training staff, family and friends who helped out throughout the year, and especially Trevor Holden who helped most weeks. Special thanks to a great assistant coach Corey Randall who coached for the four weeks when I was off getting my hip sorted. His input and enthusiasm at training and games really had a lot to do with our success. To our playing group, thanks so much for your enthusiasm and for embracing everything that a football club should stand for. When we started the women’s side no one could imagine the fantastic impact that you all have played a part in.

I wish you all the best for whatever path you take!

JUNIOR PRESIDENT’S REPORT.

This report is different to my last couple as its also my last one as the Hampton Rovers Junior President. Whilst I am a little sad about not being part of such an amazing bunch on dedicate volunteers, I’m also incredibly proud of all we have achieved in 5 years. 2019 was our best yet with over 600 kids for the first time ever and in our 40th year as a Junior element of our beloved Club.

When looking back at 2019 is start with reflecting on the pathway we created 5 years ago for kids to easily transition from Auskick, to Juniors, and then to Seniors sharing the same Inclusive Club, Club Culture and Club Values. Our very strong alignment to Auskick continued to strengthen exiting the 2018 season for Auskick with nearly 2 whole teams registered for season 2019 again. We involved our Auskick group throughout the year again in 2019 and the pathway from Auskick to Seniors has never been stronger. Increased numbers of girls at Auskick again in 2019 is also a foundation for our massive increase in girls at Hampton Rovers.

First Year Green and Gold - Under 8's – Once again we fielded more than one team in 2019 and welcomed many new kids to our youngest age group. Having so many kids join the green and gold is a very proud achievement for our committee as it really does show promising signs for the future of the club and signals further expansion.

Castlefield in full flight. We had the absolute pleasure of a full year on our beloved Castlefield this year. Well albeit apart from a couple of really muddy weeks. What a difference the new facilities have made to our club. As a training and playing location (especially for our younger ages) it’s one of the best in the league. We will continue to work closely with the council to improve our facilities with Boss James next on the list for the club to focus on with the council.

Girls Footy - One of my favourite subjects in recent years. With the help of the first lady Emma Nicholl, Girls Footy expanded again in 2019 with more teams than ever before. For the first time in the club’s history we had over 100 registered girls play both in dedicated girls teams but also as part of our mixed junior teams. Our alliance with East Sandy continued to ensure we could get as many kids playing footy as possible.

Fun and Flags - There were plenty of smiles in 2019 and lots of signing our Club song. From our youngest kids to our oldest season 2019 was a great success on and off the field. We started with another massive launch event, celebrated all things Rovers in the middle of the year, and celebrated some silverware and lightning cup wins at the end of the season. Our boys and girls has an amazing home and away season with plenty of #passion #teamwork #fun #respect. On the silverware front we managed to get an U11 D3 and U14 D5 premiership. Special mention to our Rovers girls in the U16 D1 East Sandy premiership too.

90/40 Celebration – 2019 marked the 40th year of the Juniors and the 90th as a club. From past players to current it was a great celebration all things Rovers and raised valuable funds for the club to continue its great path. The highlight for me on the night was the banter between two of the Brayshaw boys who had both rush from playing each other on the MCG to speak for us on stage. Reliving their junior days at Rovers the boys still have Green and Gold memories in their top football experiences. It reminds me how important team sport is in the development of these young humans.

To the coaches, assistants, and team managers; your roles and most importantly, responsibilities go beyond the weekend work. You all give up your time and get involved directly shaping the kids of the future for our boys and girls. You have helped create confidence in individuals, fostered friendships and created memories that will last a lifetime. I have watched many of you this year play amazing roles in our Rovers Village helping teach out kids our values through a game we all love. Thank you on behalf of the club, parents and the kids for your help in 2019. Please consider helping again in 2020.

Volunteers - I actually sat down this year and thought about it again a few times this year. On any given Sunday we need 280 volunteers in order for us to have teams simply start the game safely when we have 26 teams. From Coach to Water Carriers all are essential. If you volunteered for us I thank you on behalf of our kids. If you haven't, please can you help Rovers in 2020. Any little assistance helps the club. Having been a volunteer and part of the committee for many years I can say with confidence the smiles and

hamptonrovers.com.au HRAFC ANNUAL REPORT 2019 17

HAMPTON ROVERS FOOTBALL CLUB | EST. 1929 thanks will give you more in return than you ever imagined. Please let Rovers know if you can help in any form.

Sponsors - From our equipment, uniforms, awards and clubrooms - all have significant investment from our sponsors. The club doesn’t run without your ongoing generosity. Thank you and I help us again in 2019. To our major sponsors again in Brighton Mazda, Buxton Sandringham, Bendigo Sandringham and Hotel Brighton - thanks for being the major sponsors of our club again. I also thank all of our very loyal sponsors of the club big and small.

Finally - the committee, I really do love you all and thank you for what you do for our club and more importantly our kids. Our Rovers Tribe is a much better place thanks to your tireless dedication and commitment to make our combined club better and better. I know how hard you work and share and also share in the amazing achievement you all feel knowing you have helped over 600 kids play the game they love in a happy and safe environment. For those going around again - that is awesome. For those finishing up - you will be sadly missed but thank you sooooo much for your contribution.

I'm looking forward my transition from President to Goal Umpiring Dad in 2020. I know we will be in excellent hands with ongoing committee. I love Rovers. Always will.

UNDER 18 GIRLS (Div 1)

After winning the U18 Div 2 premiership in 2018 we were fortunate to have many of the same girls eligible and registering again to play at the U18 level in 2019. We had many new girls also signing up to take our total number of registrations at the beginning of the season to 28. To keep the numbers to a sensible limit each week the girls themselves decided to have a weekly roster system for each game if required. As it turned out the rostering off system wasn’t really necessary due to school commitments, study, holidays, work and injuries.

There were times, particularly during school holidays, where we were lucky to field just enough numbers to form a team. Fortunately this was not just a unique situation to Hampton Rovers as our opposition also struggled for numbers during these times.

After having solid wins through the initial grading rounds in Div 2 we were offered the opportunity to play in Div 1. After some discussion between coaches and team management it was decided that it would be great for the girls’ development to play in Div 1.

At times during the season we trialled having combined training with the VAFA Rovers Senior girls and this gave our top age girls in the team some exposure to what it would be like stepping up into next year, which was a positive.

It was a tough season in terms of win/loss. With 6 teams in Div 1 there was a clear difference in skill level between the top 3 sides and the bottom 3 sides. We won 3 games for the season and finished bottom of the ladder by percentage only. Had one particular team not won a match through the forfeit of their opponent, then we would have finished in 4th position. However, the spirit and passion of the group was never in question and there were some wonderful passages of play and some magnificent performances throughout the season.

The off-field highlight of the year was the end of season ‘Gownlow’ best and fairest presentation held at Boss James reserve. This was a red carpet affair with paparazzi photos, a master of ceremonies, scrumptious dinner with dessert, roaming microphone interviews, music, season review in pictures, razzle dazzle, and of course the vote count!

Congratulations to the following award winners in 2019: B & F: Stephanie Peacock Runner up: Maegan Miller Runner up: Tamsyn Higgins Runner up: Ali Coyne Most Determined: Annie Sutherland Most Improved: Bella Cameron Coaches Award: Shae Raywood

Thanks to a wonderful group of girls who were very coachable throughout the season. We sincerely hope that we see a return of all the girls in 2020 for either the Rovers U18 girls team or the Rovers VAFA Senior girls team.

Thanks to our coaches Richard Coyne, Steve Jackson, Chris Raywood, board manager and runner Justin Pickering, our co-team managers Sally Stewart and Pete Docking and thanks also to Emma Nicholl who provided the team with behind the scenes support throughout the year. Thanks also to all the parents who took on various roles throughout the season…we couldn’t manage without you.

UNDER 17 (Div 1)

With U17’s local football always being a year of unknown for boys, this year was no different. Planning commenced with the understanding that we may struggle fielding one team or we might have too many for two teams.

No surprises, our registrations lagged as our Sunday pre-season sessions began. However, as Brad Langdon continued to remind me, “registrations will come and we will field a team!”.

Round 1 was around the corner and the boys who were regularly showing their faces at the Sunday session ended up playing majority of the season at or in their respected 1st Football team at their schools, delivering another blow to our list.

The season started slow with the team unable to gel or connect with one another due to the team being combined through a number of different schools and local teams. This was expected and given time, the team came together, began to play for each other and play with effort week in, week out.

A huge come from behind win against St Bedes/Mentone Tigers in Round 3, gave the team the confidence they needed. Knocking off the team that would eventually make the grand final, saw the boys celebrate as if they had won the grand final themselves.

The team was hit with a huge blow, seeing teammate, Tristian Lilbrum, horrifically break his leg at Trevor Barker Beach Oval, which saw the game called off and cancelled. Tristian was a soldier, only to be smiling when I visited him in hospital 4 hours after being told he’d miss the rest of the season.

The season finished on an absolute high, having the team finish strong against St Bedes/Mentone Tigers in the final round of the season! With a 15 point victory to conclude the season making the entire season worthwhile. The boys improved out of sight from round 1 to 15, implementing aggressive offensive ball movement and improved defensive positioning throughout, saw a more complete and dangerous team in the second half of the season.

Award winners: B & F: Lucas Sharp Runner up: William Laverty 3rd B & F and Leading Goal Kicker: Tom Mackie Most Improved: James Bull Coaches Award: Lachie Costello Chris Judd Award: Luke Langdon

Though we see the end of junior football for this mighty team, I reiterate that football is a place that brings people together and can act as one of the best supports in a young person’s life. I urge every player to continue to play football, where ever that may be.

Well done to all the boys that came back to play this year, it has been a huge success and a very enjoyable season! Thank you to all the parents and people involved in making this season possible for the boys.

Cheers, Elliot Le Grice

UNDER 16 (Div 3)

Coordinating the Under 16 age group was found to be quite a challenging task, particularly early on. This was due to many factors such as private school football, other sporting commitments and many players moving clubs etc. This resulted in from having three healthy U/15 squads of 25+ players in 2018 to only one squad of 22 (at best) players. A drop off the coaching committee and myself never seen before in junior footy.

Questions were asked about placing the team in a lower division instead of Division 1 given that out of the 22 players in the team, only 5-6 had played in division 1 previously. The season started off quite promising with a win in our first game played, however this was to be short lived as we soon found out when we were convincingly beaten in excess of 150+ points in consecutive weeks. The league soon made the correct call and placed us in the correct division where we were able to be competitive and see some growth in the boys’ abilities as the season went on.

They boys showed glimpses throughout the season of the high quality of football that they could play at which resulted in a 3rd place finish on the ladder. Unfortunately we couldn’t rise to the equation and we bowed out of finals. A fantastic effort to make the finals in the first place.

As the season went on, the boys made vast improvement in playing the way we trained and towards the end, there were some wonderful passages of play as well as some magnificent performances throughout the season.

One of the highlights for me was the seeing two boys who had never played football before (Toby Wareham & Manny Barbas) kick their first goal of their footballing careers. Toby kicking his in one of his first games (I believe it might have been his first kick as well!) and it took till the final game of the year in the absolute pouring rain for Manny to kick his first goal. The most pleasing part was seeing the entire team get around the boys as they kicked their respective goals.

Award winners: B & F: Lachy Barlow Runner Up: Hamish Adams 2nd Runner Up : Harry Officer Most Improved: Will Crawford Most Courageous: Dan Hurd

Thanks to this wonderful group of boys coming together at the last minute and putting together a season to be proud off and who hopefully will continue to play footy in the future…hopefully many of them together! It was a challenge at times as a coach (as it can be trying to control 20+ 15-16 year old boys!) but it only made me develop my skills to make me (hopefully) a better coach

A huge thanks also to our team manager Sean Crisp who was across anything and everything, my assistant coach, Mick Crawford (when he wasn’t playing his own footy), our runner Ross McKiggan, our trainer Di Burns and all the parents who took on various roles throughout the season…we couldn’t manage without you.

Thanks again for the season, it was a pleasure to coach the boys this year and I wish the boys all the best in whatever path they decide to follow in the future.

Cheers, Andy Din

UNDER 15 (Div 1)

Pre-season From the first pre-season session of our new Sandy Rovers team(s), there was a hint of expectation & excitement from both the players & parents alike. We had to go through the unenviable task of regrading again, so every training session, notes were taken, discussions were held & finally we agreed on the team line ups for round 1.

Grading The SMJFL had decided that we start in Div 2, the pressure was on not to drop a game in the first 4 rounds, so we could request a move to div 1. The group responded, 4 solid games of football, great ball movement out of def & across the ground, mids working well & fwds kicking goals. Well done team, we were div 1 bound.

Rounds 5 – 15 First game in div 1, top of the ladder, Mordi-Brae. The team went into the game with confidence from our previous wins, but our oppo showed them how much harder you have to work as a team in Div 1. The team could match M-B, but not for the whole 20 mins of every ¼. The result a 68 point lose, but we now knew were the bar was set. The next 10 games were a roller coaster ride. Highs & lows. Unfortunately, injuries took their toll, school camps, other sporting commitments & illness, left us with 18 players most weeks & often with some players that had already played in a previous game. Throughout this period, the group did play some great football. Round 14, Mordi- Brea again. We had a chance to see if the group had improved from round 5. This was my highlight of the year, a great game of Div 1 U15 football. Both teams hard at the ball & all AFL skills were on show. A 24 point lose but, the team had challenged M-B all day, created chances, & had a 44point turnaround from rnd 5. Well done, improvement & never give up.

Thankyou To all the parent volunteers that helped during the season, our busy medics, our game day runners (sorry for all the messages to give to the boys), Pete R & Nigel G for the amazing job as TM,s, Dave O-K for your time & commitment to the group, Lisa B for helping us all to keep this together & for the chats when I needed them. Finally, to the amazing group of young men that went out & played this great game every week, thank you for your commitment, and allowing me to be a small part of your football journey. There is a touch of magic in this group, so hopefully you all stay together & with hard work & a little luck next season will be your year.

UNDER 15 (Div 3)

The success of this season would be lost on anyone only looking at the ladder. Sure, we play to win, but winning shouldn’t sit very high on the list of why young people play this great game.

For the coaches, one of the best parts of this season was seeing the boys bond and became a tight group over the season. Merging two huge clubs can be a delicate process, but the playing group came together seamlessly. By the end of the year it was impossible to tell who came from which club. Hopefully this group can carry these friendships long into their football careers and lives.

While wins were hard to come by, the boys still found on-field success. A healthy percentage of 85 shows the team was competitive in most games. Even a huge loss to Murrumbeena in grading wasn’t a disaster. Coach Ryan dubbed it the best 23 goal loss he’s ever seen, because the boys stuck to the game plan and kept on fighting until the end. The Sandy Rovers actually knocked off grand finalists St Kilda City at the start of the year, and even beat eventual premiers East Malvern in round 14 with the help of three talented under 13s. Football talent runs deep in this team and the boys showed that at their best they could beat anyone in the division.

Award winners: B & F: Jack Kennedy Runner up: Benjo Wells Coaches Award: Will Tuffley Most Determined: Angus Cameron Most Improved: Max Ryan

A special mention also goes out to all the younger players who played up throughout the year to make sure we got a team on the park every week – you were all excellent!

Also a big thankyou to the U15 boys – and their parents – who took the opportunity to play two games on a Sunday when numbers were short.

Thanks also to the parents who helped throughout the year and on game day. In particular, Michael Kennedy who was terrific all year and all the team managers and coaches who juggled the ever-changing availability of players.

It was a pleasure to coach this bunch of young men over the season. They brought passion for the game and a positive attitude every week, and were eager to learn. Importantly, they never left anything on the field and were always willing to compete. We had a lot of fun and a lot of laughs, and we’re pretty sure the boys did too.

Thanks, Ryan Fogarty, Stuart Cameron, and James Prosser

UNDER 15 (Div 4)

The 2019 season was challenging for players, coaches, team managers and parents alike. Even for the most passionate amongst us, it was, at times a struggle. The U15 Div4s started well in the 4 grading games finishing 2 and 2. Whilst we did have one comfortable win, a loss to Oakleigh was just shy of a 20 goal deficit. There were definitely mixed feelings about the season ahead particularly when the boys had to face Oakleigh at home (again) so soon in round 2 and suffer another similar defeat. As it turned out 2019 was to be a tough season, to say the least, for all 3 divs in the U15s. Plagued with everything from unprecedented injuries, school sports and other commitments our biggest challenge without a doubt was numbers on both game day and at training. We regularly ran out on the field with only 14 or 15 and on a number of occasions we had to call on both U14s and U13s to field a starting side. Regardless, countless phone calls and WhatsApp messages amongst team managers, coaches and other volunteers, ensured that apart from one unavoidable forfeit the Div4s ran out on the paddock for a game of football every week. Our final position (second last) did not reflect the talent we had in Div4 and many weeks we sent boys to play Div3 and Div1 where they held their own. Each week we saw different players develop and show what they were really capable of but our struggle as coaches was getting that talent to come through consistently as a team and find players most effective positions. Unfortunately we only managed to sing the club song(s) a couple of times during the season but the boys did so loud and even when the resulting loss was evident by half time boys never gave up and they all showed plenty of determination until the final siren which they should be proud of. A highlight and without doubt the most memorable game was a rare but convincing win against Waverly towards the end of the season. However, it wasn’t the win that made it so memorable. With the Waverly kit a similar colour to us it was suggested we wear the clash tops. Not having sized the jumpers up before the day it soon became evident that they were at least 2 age groups too small. Seeing 6ft strapping young lads fight for what little size increase available was certainly a sight to behold. Most ran out on the field that day in what was more suited to swimming or cycling than football. Where were our U13s now? Again the boys didn’t let this deter them they laughed with (and at) each other and ran out again as a team with heads held high. We did have a difficult season with numbers and in hindsight it would have been better to have only 2 sides and rest a couple of players each week if necessary. That said we had a very committed group of volunteers and with a good deal of player shuffling we got the boys a game each week. Whilst I would like to mention each and every player that contributed throughout the season the following awards were handed out at our end of year gathering. B&F: Oska Tanner B&F Runner up: Sam Feehan Coaches Award: Noah Hunt Most Determined: Casper Payne Most Improved: Uriah Gilbert

WOW, what a season. Where do we start?

I guess looking back the best thing we did was appoint Christian and Zach to coach one of the two teams in 2019, with Peter, Oscar, Paul as the D1 game day TM and Graham working of the boys movement and fitness our staff was well placed to look after the squads need to have fun, improve and look forward to a great season ahead. With a squad of 46, 2 weeks prior to the season opener our squad became 54 real quick, Christian for someone so young in his coach journey identified how important it was for us to be inclusive and manage the numbers, even if this meant possibly being less competitive from time to time.

With Preseason underway I though how physically advanced we looked on the previous year, we would start in D2 by rounds 2-3 I figured we would compete well with all teams. D1 however in Rnd 5 was in my mind the highlight of the year, it was Sir Doug Nicholls round our first game back in Div 1 after winning our first 4 game in D2 and earning the right to be elevated back up.

We played faultless footy that day, every lad played well, Cecil a stand out on a day that he Captained the team with Indigenous significance.

Another highlight was the drawn game against the eventual premiers in Beaumaris, what a day, nail biting, great to see both teams mingle at the end of the game, lots of respect shown. Beating the reigning premiers in rnd 15 to finish 3rd on the ladder at the end of the home and away season had me beaming post game.

Our squad of 54 players and coaching staff matured almost in a blink, we were served by young guys that put the squad first before their own aspirations of playing div 1, a huge shout out to James as Captain of the Div 5 team, Dylan and Colby also for being pulled from one team to the other and playing a significant role in helping the D5 experience the ultimate.

Congrats to every player that played in 2019, I hope you had a much fun as I did.

I love coaching with Oscar, his calm influence and smart player management is wonderful to see, well done Pidgeon.

Thanks to Peter C, his time as squad manager is much appreciated, to Paul Lohan, Graham, Christian, Zach and Ash who popped over the road and helped, thanks to all of you.

Well done to THE TRACTOR ROBERTS for being Captain and representing us at Interleague, fancy having only 1 player from our group do that.

Finally, thanks to Julie, Mason and Kai for allowing me to coach such an awesome group of boys, I won’t coach next year, good luck to Carney, Oscar, Zach in their coaching aspirations, I look forward to seeing what 2020 brings.

Good Luck to everyone

Love Caggs

UNDER 14 (Div 5)

From the get go the boys had such an infectious happy attitude. Back at the very first training session the vibe for the year was so optimistic, and who would have guessed we would be undefeated (after grading) and go on to win the premiership.

The eagerness to learn from the group was outstanding, and so was the will to work for success. Various team structures and plans were brought to the table, and as coaches we really weren’t sure how they would execute them. They were tricky, put the boys out of their comfort zone and relied on trust between themselves in physically demanding scenarios. We initiated a press, a defensive mentality as forwards, and an aggressive mentality as defenders. The boys did this extremely well during the entire season.

After our grading, we played some absolute cracking close games. By some of the most narrowest of margins, we managed to win games from our grit, never die attitude and team chemistry. We kicked to our talls, used our pace, and gave the first option.

The hard work at training was also part of our success. Yes, at times we were a bit silly and didn’t start with the right attitude, but we always matured and pulled through a big session, usually ending with push- ups and mini games between players. A highlight was when we played a tackling mini game, where we were all assigned numbers. If your number was called out, you had to go and retrieve a footy before the other person did. This brought an element of competitiveness to our game, and taught us that when ‘its your turn to go, you have to go’.

A highlight was a game against arch rivals Mordialloc where we were down at halftime playing average football, lifted hugely in the second half and came back to take probably the best win of the season besides finals. Our first final against them was also a highlight. For the first time all year I can say every single player contributed greatly in this win and was a thrilling game to watch. One of those games where everything went right.

The award winners were: B&F: Dylan Van Der Haar Runner up: Jack Cahill Coaches award: Harry Seid Most Determined: Paddy Troy Most Improved: Charlie Wittington

Thank you to all our helpers, supporters, parents and friends who came along this wild journey of success. You are all a part of this outcome and could not have made it without you. Hopefully it’s just the beginning for more. It was a privilege to coach this group, thank you all for the opportunity.

Cheers, Christian Carnovale

UNDER 14 GIRLS

This year, there were a few girls who were new to Hampton Rovers and some girls who were also new to the sport. With 15 girls, it was always a struggle to have the full team on game day. We were grateful for players from our other Rovers U14 girls team and our U12 girls team playing up to help us out when we were short on players.

Unfortunately, this wasn’t our season to play in a Grand Final and come away with the flag. This season, we walked away with 1 win under our belts. The win was against Mordialloc Braeside with a score of 3.2-20 to 2.2-14. After their well-deserved win, the girls couldn’t remember the words to the club song. With every game the girls gave it their all, so our ranking in no way resembles the great season the girls played. We still had a very successful season.

Success isn’t just determined by the number of games won. Success is also the small achievements along the way.

If we compare how the girls played at the beginning of this season to their performance in the last couple of matches, their improvement was a huge achievement. All the girls should be proud of their hard work and the determination they applied to their football. Throughout the season, the girls individual skills and abilities improved as well as their team cohesion and playing great game of football together.

By the end of the season, the girls were far more confident in themselves, running with the ball, taking on their opposition and even having shots for goals.

The girls were all able to celebrate a great season at presentation night. It was very close between all the girls as each one of them had an outstanding season. In the end, the award winners were:

Best and Fairest: Lily McEniry

Best and Fairest Runner-up: Maya Forbes

Coaches Award: Elyse Keenan

Most Determined: Amelia Lees

Most Improved: Millie Cripps

This was my first season of coaching and I have had an absolute ball coaching such amazing girls. I would like to thank all the girls in my team for a great season. Thank you to the parents for all their help and support. Without their help, driving the girls to every game, this season wouldn’t have been possible. Also, a special thank you to Lucy Nailon for all her work as team manager this season!

UNDER 13 (Div 2)

We started the season with a total of 39 registrations which were divided into two teams. The Div 2 team had 21 players and the Div 6 side had 18.

We had a season ending injury to one of our players (Angus Gill) in round one and with another two of our players moving to the Div 6 side during the year and we ended up with 18 players on our list.

In addition to this we had players missing throughout the season with either illness or holidays (which you would expect) along with APS sports.

The result was we finished with 4 wins and 11 losses and missed out on finals.

That all been said, I believe we had a wonderful year if you assess the season based on player development and team cohesion. Our playing group really enjoyed training and preparing for each game.

On game day the players were really switched on fought out the games as much as I could have asked.

We started the season with a one point win against Prahran and ended the season with a terrific backs to the wall type win against East Sandy. I think it was very fitting for the team to finish the season off on a high.

In hindsight with the numbers we had, we probably would have been more competitive in a lower division and maybe keep this in mind for 2020 if we have the same issues with player numbers.

I made an effort all season not to discuss or talk about our lack of numbers to the playing group and focused all my energies on the positives and getting the most out of the group.

I’m really proud of our playing group the way they conducted themselves both on and off the field and would hope that each and every player will return in 2020.

Note: We introduced a new award (Heart & Soul) which we awarded to Angus Gill having missed the entire season due to a broken collarbone from round one.

I would like to thank Andrew Kollmorgen (Koje) for being such an amazing and supportive assistant coach along with Trent Hotton who also assisted amazingly both at training and on game day.

To our two wonderful team managers in Di Thomas and Paul Ryan who both did an incredible job in organizing all the roles and game day requirements.

It’s been awesome coaching such a terrific group of kids this season and hope that every player has also enjoyed their football this year.

UNDER 12 (Div 1)

What a year! What an unbelievable, enthralling, emotional and character building year.

The under 12 squad were graded for the first time. This created 2 very competitive team’s in Division 1 and Division 6. The coaching group were excited for the season ahead. As a group we have grown and enjoyed supporting each other as an age group. Damian and myself have been extremely happy with the development of the group the past two years. The coaching group as a whole have been very committed to making the boys better footballers.

Our season began strongly. The talent on show was very exciting to watch for the entire year. We got through grading unscathed with AJAX and Beaumaris showing us we weren't going to enjoy an easy season. As the season progressed we were learning game plans and structures and becoming smarter on how to play the game. Chris Leeds was able to work closely with midfields set ups and entry into the forward line.

We had been beaten once up until the halfway point of the season with East Brighton showing their improvement. We put the performance down to half the team being on camp in the lead up. They also beat us later in the season with us wasting opportunities and kicking 1 goal 12 in 3 qtrs of football. We had great games against Prahran and SMD and the win in the wet over AJAX was the highlight of our year. We knew we would see them in the finals. East Malvern caused a upset over us in the final game of the season. They were hungrier for victory needing to win to make finals.

The finals saw us compete against East Brighton, who we hadn't beaten in the season proper. The early start was going to be in our favour. The boys responded to the pre game rev up and address superbly, hitting the opposition hard. Whilst we didn't hurt them on the scoreboard we felt the flood gates were about to open. We ran away with game winning very comfortably and booking our spot in the grand final.

AJAX were always going to be a tough proposition. We didn't get the start we'd hoped for and they were a bit more harder at the contest than us on the day. We fought right through to the final siren, which was extremely pleasing and showed great character and spirit. We went down by 28pts.

Our awards night saw Hudson Jongen win the b&f with Harry Block the runner up. Ollie Sutherland, Charlton Tolhurst and Matt Boutlis also received recognition for their great seasons.

All the Division 1 boys have showed a great level of improvement, development and maturity. Next year it will go up another level of skill and competitiveness.

Enjoy the off season and I look forward to being involved with the under 13 age group in 2020.

Go Hampton Rovers – best mates!

Cheers Wayno

UNDER 12 (Div 6)

The 2019 season brought about a new look to the under 12 division with the boys being graded which resulted in many boys playing together for the first time. Our focus was on team and encapsulating the Rovers values of Passion, Teamwork, Fun and Respect.

The season got off to a slow but competitive start with a number of close loses. Round 3 saw our first win. We could see the boys gelling and gaining more confidence in each other and themselves each week. Teamwork was improving every game. By mid-season we had put together a flurry of wins as our running game really kicked into action. The boys were starting to understand their role in the team and were connecting well with each other. The support and encouragement amongst the group was a highlight.

School holidays brought a break that halted our momentum and we struggled to reach the same heights and regain any momentum until late in the season. This inconsistency is not unusual with a young developing side and we never lost our belief and the encouragement never wavered from the players, coaches and parents.

Going into the last round of the season we had a must win game to ensure we played finals, a loss would most likely mean missing out. We took on the top side who had lost just one game for the season. In what was to undoubtably be the best team effort for the year we pulled off a rousing win and the celebrations that followed is something we will all remember for a long time. For many of the boys this would be their first opportunity to play in a finals game. The result was well deserved and didn’t come down to any one player – we saw many of the boys play their best game for the year.

The belief and confidence we had been building into the boys all season really paid dividends in round 15. The joy on their faces made all the sacrifices the parents and coaches had put in all season worth it inside of 60 minutes of football. All the cold Wednesday nights spent at Castlefield trying to keep the attention of 24 young fellas felt like time well invested.

This game gave us great belief going into the semi final where we acquitted ourselves really well. Unfortunately, we lost by a couple of goals but were in the game all day until late in the final quarter. It’s a cliché but never truer to say that although we lost on the scoreboard, we had 24 winners finish the season.

The camaraderie this group built through the 2019 season was super impressive. The coaching group took enormous joy to see the way the boys approached their football this year, particularly the last part of the season. They left nothing behind, gave everything they had.

When we reflect on what we set out to achieve this year the season has been a huge success. 24 boys who loved playing football together, take great pride in pulling on the green and gold each week and had a lot of fun all the way through. Individually we have seen enormous improvement in each and every boy and they are to be congratulated on their progress, which has largely been driven by their wonderful attitude.

We would love to have had an award for every boy, but congratulations to the award winners: Best and Fairest Peter Shady Runner Up B&F Thomas Phillips Most Consistent Matthew Cole Most Improved William Smith Coaches Award Max Bogue

A special thanks to Chris Mitchell, Daryl Weavers and Marty Cole for the hours of work they have put into the boys this year. Also, to the parents for your absolute support and willingness to get involved every week and help. Teamwork extends beyond the field of play.

UNDER 12 GIRLS (Violet)

2019 year began with the focus on the same group of girls playing with one another again from 2018. With a few girls staying with their age group who didn’t come up to the U/12’s and a few new faces to the team, it was going to be a fun year. Focus, was always going to be trying to win a game and be able to have the girls sing the song. This happened early in the grading games and we had our first chance to sing the club song, which was awkward as the girls didn’t know the words, but they pushed through with smiles all round. The motivation to win was probably put down to the girls asking if they could give the coach a Gatorade shower if they did manage a win! Low and behold the shower came the first training session post our win, and the girls had huge pleasure in doing so. The improvement from 2018 was huge as the girls managed to play exceptionally well throughout the grading games and it proved that their concentration and want to learn had flowed through from 2018 into 2019. With such a solid performance the league graded us strongly and the girls never managed another win during the season proper, but their endeavour and attitude never wavered throughout the year, and the thing that stood out most was their resilience. To keep their morale up due, we called in some favours and one of our parents Justin Crough arranged an opportunity for the girls to train at Trevor Barker Oval. Justin arranged to have two AFLW players from Melbourne Sarah Lampard and Kate Hore take training, and we arranged pizzas with Q&A time afterwards which was an amazing experience for the girls to have this exposure and some really good role models to aspire to be. We also had a team bonding night at ten pin bowling which again was a fantastic opportunity for the girls to be a close group, which hopefully they learn some valuable life lessons about team sports and team building. 2019 Award Winners: B&F: Lucy Mollow Runners Up: Sienna Crough & Willow Hunt Most Determined: Sienna Healy Most Improved: Scarlett Bakker Coaches Trophy: Agatha Beare Congratulations to all winners, but more importantly congratulations to ALL the players for a great attitude and willingness to learn and be part of a team. I would like to make special mention to the following people Mark Stokes our team manager who was instrumental in arranging all the parents to chip in and help. Michael Inserra our assistant coach who also did a lot of umpiring throughout the year, thanks Michael for taking training when I was unavailable. Our unofficial assistant coach Justin Crough who helped out most training nights and on game day. All parents who supported the group throughout the year, we always had enough parents to fill every role and responsibility. Regards, Robbie Coccaro

UNDER 12 GIRLS (Orange)

At the start of our 2019 campaign, we had 18 girls ready to roar but unfortunately no coach. Our popular coach from 2018 (Josh) had responded to the call from the U14 Girls and moved up an age group! Nonetheless, our ever-organized TM Kylie Jones put the call out to the parent group and a troupe of Dads dutifully responded and assembled at Cornerstone Café to nut out our coaching structure and plan for the year. The readiness of the Dads that day to come together and to “do whatever is needed” for our girls to get onto the park turned out to be typical of our entire parent group which became a key reason why we ended up enjoying such a great year.

Of our 18 girls, 9 were first year players so we approached the initial (Division 1) grading rounds with realistic expectations. Fair to say we were pleasantly surprised as our returning players showed that they hadn’t lost any speed or skill and our first-year players demonstrated some raw talent.

After a big win in round 1, we were on the losing side of the ledger for the remaining grading rounds which saw us relegated to the more appropriate division 2 competition from round 5. Over the succeeding weeks and months, our girls recorded some great wins and narrow losses but all the while developed their skills, fitness and love of the game. They conducted their Wednesday night training sessions with equal serves of effort and sassiness, as any 10, 11 or 12-year old girl is perfectly entitled to do. A highlight was the team bonding that occurred at our “hot chip” training sessions several times over the season.

As the season wore on, we ended up with 7 wins from 11 games and finished the home and away rounds in 3rd spot on the ladder, having lost in a low-scoring and injury-ridden affair to 2nd place South Melbourne in round 15. That setup a semi-final clash with the Bloods just 1 week later in a winner-take-all bid to play in the Grand Final.

Our girls fronted up to the semi with more fire and determination in their belly than they’d shown all year, partially to avenge the previous weeks narrow loss and to earn themselves a place on the Big Stage, but equally in support of their fallen teammate Olive Tuppen who suffered a broken shoulder in the previous weeks’ game. After almost lifting the roof off the (temporary, portable) change rooms at King George Reserve during their animated pre-game routine, our girls burst onto the ground and put on a desperate display of football in every zone and position. We got out to a handy lead by half-time, but we were pegged back and severely tested in the 2nd half until the scores were level with minutes to play. South Melbourne had the breeze and the momentum throughout the 4th quarter, but our girls showed their mettle and intent and managed to score a solitary point in the dying seconds in what was probably our only inside 30 for the quarter. Elation ensued on the sidelines, and the girls were pretty happy too!

So, our girls had deservedly earned themselves a spot in the Grand Final, against the division’s bogey team Ormond, who was undefeated for the year. With green and yellow ribbons in their hair and a “best on ground” banner, the Rover girls were up and about early and confidently chose to kick with the strengthening breeze after winning the toss. Unfortunately, Ormond showed why they were the minor premiers and kicked 5 straight in the opening term, leaving us shell-shocked at the break and with a job to do just holding on while Ormond had the breeze. What happened next even upstaged the heroics from our semi-final win and had our parent group bursting with pride. After such a tough start, the girls rebounded so strongly and with such determination that they held Ormond scoreless in the 2nd quarter despite the breeze. Our football was intense, and our desire was unmatched. The intent carried on for the remainder of the game, and despite being exhausted from effort we stayed competitive to the end, out-scoring the opposition from the quarter-time break on. In the wash-up, Ormond were deserving winners by 25 points, but our girls played the game out all the while demonstrating the best of the Rovers spirit.

We had a great year in 2019, helped by an amazing parent group but made by a very special group of fun- loving girls. Special thanks to Kylie (TM); John (Asst Coach); Nick (Co-Coach & Runner); Sean (Runner); Nathan & Ray (Umpires); Lisa (Photos); Grant & Terry (Match Reports); Soph, Michelle & Hillary (Trainers).

UNDER 11 (Div 3)

Any year that ends in a premiership is likely to be a good year. But it is what happens in your team between that first training session and the last game on grand final day that determines if it is a great year.

We started off well enough in our grading games winning three and dropping one. From this point we began to develop as a team. Through a couple of simple team rules, that I’m sure the boys got sick of hearing from me, we started to develop some cohesive team work. We were lucky enough to go through the rest of the year unbeaten.

Qualifying for the finals on top of the ladder we were up against East Brighton in the semi-final who had taken us to a one point win early in the season. While we controlled the game for the first three quarters, with a few injury concerns, they came at us hard in the last. We managed to hold them off for an uncomfortable win.

In the Grand Final Nathan Buckley’s Prahran team jumped us early kicking the first two goals of the game. We managed to steady and kick the next two to go into quarter time only a couple of points down. From there we took control of the game only letting one more goal through from Prahran and running away with the Premiership.

While it was amazing to be a part of winning a flag the aim of any junior sport is development of the kids. And this was the satisfying highlight of the year for me as a coach. We started the season with a number of boys playing some very good footy but what we developed into was a group of kids who were prepared to work together and support each other playing as a very good team. This ensured that it wasn’t just a good year but a great year.

Award winners: B & F: Paddy Wilson Runner up: Jody Cripps Most Determined: Toby Clarkson Most Improved: Finn White Coaches Award: Campbell Holtham

I feel lucky that I have had the pleasurable job each week of coaching the kids. But, as with any team it is the parent volunteers that make each game from week to week run smoothly. We have not been in short supply filling any of these jobs all year and I appreciate anyone who put their hand up. I have to make a special thanks to Nick King for his work as Assistant Coach, Jason Cripps for filling the Runners duty for most of the season and, most importantly, the person who has made this team tick smoothly for the past two season, my Team Manager, Bec Wilson.

Thanks for a Great year, Marcus Nolan

UNDER 11 (Div 6)

With some 45 registrations for the new season, Under 11’s is always a challenge as the arm bands come off and the grading process commences.

As a new coach with only one training sessions before our first game, it was always going to take time to gel the side together.

The four practice matches consisted of boys playing in many different positions which resulted in one win and graded in Division 6.

During the season, unfortunately, injuries took their toll during games, and a lack of bench for most games, had us winning only one game for the season.

Out of the 11 home and away games, 6 out of 10 games we lost were by less than 10 points. If we remove our first quarters from games, we would have finished third on the ladder.

Importantly, the spirit and the hunger of each player was on shown until the final game of the season.

Every player showed great improvement which provided the most enjoyment for all parents and myself.

Award winners: B & F: Harry Ockerby Runner up: Jade Doherty Most Determined: Baxter Moss Most Improved: Sonny Gittus Coaches Award: Theeran Goyal

Congratulations also to Harry Ockerby for winning the competition B&F award. Very well deserved.

Thanks to a wonderful group of boys who improved greatly over the season.

Looking to see all again for a bigger and better 2020.

Thanks also to our team manager Anthea and many other helpers. Anthea took on a massive role with limited knowledge of Aussie Rules Football and was magnificent all season.

UNDER 10 (Red)

I would like to congratulate all 20 boys that made up the Under 10 Red team in 2019. I am so proud of how the boys have developed their skills and approached their training and games this season. The boys have become great mates over the past three years and as a result have played as a team every Sunday this season. Every single boy has contributed to not only the success of the team each week, but also to the mateship that has been created within this group. It has been fantastic to watch every team member develop both on and off the field.

To all the parents - thank you for supporting the entire team and reliably volunteering each week. Special mention to our Assistant Coach Roger Okalyi, for all his support to myself and all the boys every single week. To our Team Manager Kate Hatton for all her preparation and work behind the scenes. To Bill Hare, thank you for not only taking to the field each week as umpire, but for continually educating the boys on respect and good sportsmanship. To our Runner Chris Tanner and Trainers Penny Green and Anita Nichols – thank you for your commitment at each game.

The footy season came and went in a blink of an eye this year.

The boys had another incredible season, the ongoing consistency of their football and teamwork is to be commended. Each week the whole playing group took to the ground with true Rovers values of passion, teamwork, fun and respect. They started the season off strong, playing good football and improving each week. They remained undefeated up until round 12. The boys used this loss as an opportunity to learn and prepare themselves for our end of season lightning carnival. The boys arrived at Highett Football Club pumped and ready to play! Our first game of three games was against East Brighton, the only team to defeat us. The boys went out in very difficult, windy conditions with great attitude and determination and defeated the Vampires! The boys dominated the next two games and brought home the pennant! Well done boys it was such a well-deserved win, not just on the day but for the entire season.

Individual award winners for 2019 were Angus Aujard (B&F), Nate Jongen (Runner Up B&F), Will McKean (Most Determined), Charlie Tanner (Most Improved) and Riley Withington (Coaches Award).

I can say with hand on heart that it has been an honour and a privilege to coach this amazing group of boys for the first three seasons of their football journey at Hampton Rovers. Thank you for the memories! I look forward to cheering you all on from the sidelines next year.

Cheers, Ian Jones U10 Red Coach

UNDER 10 (Blue - Nelson)

Heading into the final season of modified rules for our Under 10 team the focus was to ensure that all players were capable and skilled to play in every zone, and that that the club’s four pillars of Teamwork, Passion, Fun and Respect were prevalent in everything we did as a team.

After starting the season graded in Under 10 Yellow for the first 4 rounds, the team were soon graded to Under 10 Blue for the remainder of the season. In Blue – the team found themselves well matched to the opposition each week.

In modified rules a successful home and away season is determined differently to older age groups. There are no scores and no winners or losers each week. The successful season that our team had was a result of ensuring that all players had the same opportunities at training, as well as sharing ground time equally for all players across the 3 zones. This philosophy for the team has reaped huge benefits with every player improving throughout 2019.

For the first time this year (for our team) at the conclusion of the home and away season there was a pennant awarded for the Lightning Carnival. Our team played very well at the Carnival collecting 3 wins from 3 matches against Dingley, Beaumaris and Ajax. It was a fitting end to modified rules for the team with the boys able to celebrate being awarded their first pennant.

The team were fortunate to have a wonderful group of parents that were prepared to give their time and energy each week to help with coaching and other match day roles. I would like to thank Wayne Langford (Asst. Coach), Brett Lynch (Runner), Julian Sill (Midfield Coach), and Rod Block (Forwards Coach) for all of their effort and knowledge that they were able to impart on the playing group each week. Thank you to Julian Sill for conducting a regular Saturday skills session each week for the entire U10 age group across the club.

Our team has been fortunate to have Alisdair Smyth as the Team Manager for the last 2 seasons. Thank you Alisdair for everything you have done for both the team and the broader U10 Rovers age group organisational matters this season.

Overall we had a great season and we look forward to the new challenges that U11’s, and stepping outside the confines of the modified rules for the first time will bring for our team in 2020. Well done to all the players on a great season.

UNDER 10 (Blue – Curtis)

We entered the season with all 18 players from the previous years under 9 team and welcomed 3 new players to the Rovers which gave us a squad of 21 for the season which was a nice number to allow plenty of game time.

This season the team were moved up to the advanced level for grading after having only lost 1 game last season. In the grading the boys did very well winning 3 out of 4 games. We were graded in the second advanced grade which was a huge step up on previous year in beginner.

We finished the 10 home and away games 5 and 5 which was fantastic to have such as competitive season. In the lightning premiership the boys were entered into the advanced level and again fought hard winning the first, losing the second and losing the third by less than a kick.

Importantly, by the end of the year the boys had strengthened relationships showing great spirit and comradery in every sense of the club’s junior motto of Passion, Teamwork, Fun and Respect. These results have given this group a great third year experience and will hold them on good ground going into U11s.

Individual award winners went to Luke Kollmorgen (Best & Fairest) and Harry Haines (Best & Fairest Runner-Up). While many boys could have earned the remaining awards, these went to Ben Montgomery (Most Determined), Josh Bou Diab (Coaches Award) and Flynn Sugrue (Most Improved).

Special thanks to Mark Haines and Aaron Dowling (Assistant Coaches), Megan Temple (Team Manager), Ben Jebb and Andrew Kollmorgen (Runners) and every parent who assisted with every job with enthusiasm and without question. The entire season ran like clockwork and the boys are looking forward to next season moving up to Under 11’s.

UNDER 10 (Violet)

In 2018 the 4th mixed team for our age group came together right on the eve of the opening game, which meant our first few training sessions and games were as much about the kids getting to know each other as it was about playing footy. In contrast the 2019 pre-season sessions at Sandi Secondary College saw all the familiar faces back and catching up with their mates from the previous season after the summer hiatus.

With some handy new additions to the club joining our team to cover some intra team movement, we started the season with a squad of 20 that were ready and raring to go. Based on the success the how the kids performed last year we came up against some challenging teams in these early games. But as was a pattern for the season, these challenges never caused the kids to drop their heads and only made them try even harder, which resulted in the song being belted out post game only a few rounds into the season.

Through-out the season we came up against an array of sides at different developmental stages. No matter what though the kids gave it 100%. While our team was probably one of the smaller ones getting around in our divisions we still always challenged the physically bigger sides and more often than not sang the song post game when the teams were evenly matched.

With a squad of 20 we were short on numbers some weeks but our team manager did a great job to always organise top up players from the under 9’s or the other under 10’s sides. The addition of those kids to help out was always greatly appreciated. Equally, when some of our players weren’t able to play due to injury it was awesome to see them still there on game day to support their team mates.

There were a couple of defining games for the season. The first one came early in the season when we faced off against a quality East Brighton outfit on their large home ground. While the first half saw them take the ascendancy and kick away to handy lead, our kids never gave up running the game right out to the end and even outscoring the more fancied Vampires in the second half. It was a tremendous team effort all round!

During the home and away season, we were outplayed by an evenly matched Waverly Hawks. While we were missing a couple of key players it really was a case of the game that got away. Our last game of the Lightening carnival would see us take on the Hawks in a rematch. This game was approached as if it was our Grand Final and the kids (and coaches) were super pumped for this one. While the lightening carnival kicked off under sunny skies, a huge cold front swept through Melbourne before the final game with the Hawks. Despite the adverse conditions however, the Rovers were the ones who wanted the ball more and were able to flip the previous result to end the season on a real high.

Award winners: B & F: Finn Strachan Runner up: Thomas Cunningham Most Determined: Mannix VanHeer Most Improved: Harry Jones Coaches Award: Anthony Rotarangi

Overall it has been a great season. The team has been wonderful to coach and the improvement shown by all players over the course of the season has been especially impressive!

Thanks also to our team manager Carolyn Jones who has done an amazing job keeping us all organised over the last 2 years, our dedicated assistant coach Brandon VanHeer, our passionate runner Kane Miller, our quality umpire(s) Paul Kelly and all the parents who took on various roles throughout the season…we couldn’t manage without you.

UNDER 10 GIRLS

The under 10 girls team was formed in 2019 and it was the first time that the Hampton Rovers had fielded such a young girls team.

3 of the girls had previously played in U12 teams with the Rovers in 2018 and the rest of the group were totally new to playing footy. We started the pre-season with only 6 girls registered and that number grew to 19 by round 5 as word continued to spread through the community that the U10 girls team was rolling.

It was my first year of coaching junior footy and we had absolutely no idea about how the zones worked and there were many weeks in the early games that girls were wearing the wrong wristbands. The girls did really well in the grading games and we were moved from Beginner to Experienced for the regular season. This meant that we were up against some very strong and experienced teams. The girls remained very competitive and loved singing the song after successful games most weeks.

It was an absolute pleasure to coach the Hampton Rovers Roses ( Caggs dubbed us with that name in one of his early season football manager reports ). The girls all loved playing the game and were eager to learn as much as they could. They took instruction on board and were always there to support each other. The Hampton Rovers values of passion, teamwork, fun, respect were on display every week with this group.

The improvement in each and every one of the girls was amazing to witness. At the start of the season most of the group struggled to kick the ball very far with marking and tackling skills needing lots of work. By the time we reached August, all of the girls could easily kick twice as far as they could at the start and were very competent marks. The tackling improved every single week and the pressure applied to opposition sides was fantastic.

The B&F was decided by 1 solitary vote and the other 3 awards could have gone to any of the 17 other girls on the list. The winners listed below were all very worthy to be acknowledged for their achievements throughout the season. We all had a great celebration at presentation night recently and it was great to see all of the girls and their parents once again. I am sure that all of the 19 girls will be playing footy next year and I cannot wait to see how far they can go in 2020.

Award winners: B & F: Jasmyn Burns Runner up: Jazzey Cripps Most Determined: Jessica Watts Most Improved: Audrey Parker Coaches Award: Tilly DeVroome

A big thank you to Leigh Whitney who was a great support as both assistant coach and runner. My eldest daughter Emilie was also a big help with the magnet board and player rotations. Also, a massive thank you to Nicole Killey, our team manager, who did a wonderful job after flying blind in her first season at a footy club. Emma Nicholl was a great support to all of us and we would not have got the team rolling without her help and support. Thanks to all of the parents who took on various roles throughout the season…we couldn’t manage without you. Special mentions to Stu Sharp and Mark Parker who were our volunteer umpires and did a terrific job each week.

Whilst some quieter weekends will be welcomed initially, I cannot wait for 2020 to roll around so we can get back into it.

UNDER 9 (Blue)

This year we again had 3 teams across the Under 9 age group, which was a fantastic result. It enabled us to keep all the kids together in their same teams from Under 8’s and allowed the coaches to continue working specific development plans for each team.

Our team the Mighty Blues, had a very competitive season. We found ourselves in a competition which was evenly matched and apart from a couple of games, most of the games were extremely close right to the very end.

Last year Ben (assistant coach) and I focused on the basics – kicking, handballing, marking, manning up and team work. This year we introduced a basic game strategy, to get the kids thinking more about what they were going to do with the football and how we were going to use it.

This year we focused on kicking out from the back line down the flanks, never kick across the opposition goal. Midfield push across and created leads for the ball coming out of the back line. Once the midfield gained control, bring it into the forward line and aim for the HOTSPOT – top of the square.

It wasn’t long before the kids grasped the ideas and were following the game plan. Thinking before they kicked it out of the back line and following the game plan down the ground to the forward line.

The most pleasing aspect of the season was seeing the kids continue to improve both individually and as a team. They moved the ball exceptionally well and were always looking down the field for free team mates. They backed each other up and always looked out for each other.

The other pleasing aspect was seeing the great sportsmanship displayed by all our players. They always played the game in the spirit of the Rovers mantra – Passion Teamwork Fun and Respect.

When it was all done and dusted, a very rewarding season. Every child should be proud of their efforts and contribution to the Mighty Blues.

The awards went as follows: Best & Fairest – Jason Ingram Runner Up B&F – Sebastian Bardwell Coaches Award – Alex White Most Determined – Ben Vodiloski Most Improved – Sam Garlick

Big thankyou’s to our team manager Fi O’Keefe, Paul Ratcliffe who umpired every game, Marcelo Ghoukassian our trainer for every game and Carolyn Keech & Matt Norton who shared runner duties throughout the season. Also a big thankyou to all our volunteer parents.

Thanks,

Rohan & Ben.

UNDER 9 (Purple)

It was fantastic to see so many of our under 8's return for another season of Rovers footy. In fact from last year we only lost one team mate whose family relocated to Germany but were lucky enough add 5 new player to our team. We always say, a measure of success in junior footy is about how many kids come back and play the following year!

Our new boys, Stevie, Joe, Seb George and Max (plus their families) made an awesome contribution to the Rovers and showed some fantastic development through the year. We look forward to seeing all these boys come back next year.

Our focus for the year continued what we started last year which picked up the Rovers mantra of Passion, Teamwork, Fun and Respect. At training, we tried to focus on two main things, being basic skills (left and right kicking and handballs) as well as starting to teach some structured form of game play. Keeping it simple is key, so we focussed on playing a position (not having everyone run to where the ball went next), leading into space and the defensive side of our game.

Through the season the kids grew so much and learnt to sacrifice their own game for the betterment of the team - this is hard for a 9 year old to appreciate how this contributes to the team, but by the end of the season the kids understood. Importantly, this did not mean always playing the most talented kids in the key positions, it meant rotating players through all positions with fair game time allowing each team member to develop.

Not that we count wins and losses, but we experienced some close games, sometimes we came out on top and sometimes not. However, I truly believe players learn more from a close loss than an easy win. So it was good to see our boys feel a little bit hurt on a close loss, but even more encouraging to see them remember it the following week and bounce back and focus on parts of the game that we agreed to improve on from the earlier week.

Our lightening carnival was a fantastic day, every boy had a highlight throughout the carnival whether it was snapping goals, defending well, tackling their hearts out or doing a job for the team that contributed to a great day! The spirit the team showed that day was memorable and it was amazing to see our plans come together in our final match. The boys worked hard out of the middle, were disciplined with their manning up and tackling, found space on the flanks and lead to the ball in the forward line to create countless chances - it was truly awesome to see the boys in action and the passion they showed after the final siren made a coach smile! As you would expect the sound of "we do like to be beside the seaside" was truly rousing and showed a huge amount of passion.

A big thanks to all our parent helpers - without you we can't make this work.

Walt - it has been a fantastic 2 years, you support and passion for the boys is awesome. Good luck as you take the reigns for next years under 8's - you'll have a ball and the kids will learn heaps. Em - without you none of this happens! Our trainers - Atcho and Sarah - thanks it is so important to have you at each game to help the boys Barto and Joey - umpiring is never easy, but really appreciate you putting your hand up! Barrie and TD - thanks for running and putting up with me! To the dads who always turned up to help at training - thanks, your help is really appreciated and makes it so much easier To all the parents who scored, kept time and goal umpired - thank you.

All our boys had a great year, improved immensely and hoping formed the start of some lifelong friendships. Special recognition to our award winners.

Best and Fairest - Angus Runner up best and fairest - Zac Most Determined - George Coaches award - Will Most improved - Ollie

Looking forward to seeing everyone back next year!

UNDER 9 (Yellow)

Our 2019 season started as the U9 Orange team. Most of the players were returning from their first year of club football in 2018 and we were joined by a couple of new faces as well. We had seventeen enthusiastic boys and one enthusiastic girl, ready and raring to pull on the green and gold.

We kicked off the season with a game at the Boss, and it was evident from the get go the player’s games had all matured enormously from U8s – the competition was fierce. Everyone settled into their on-field positions, and adapted really well to any changes that came their way in the game. On a truly Melbourne day (four seasons in four quarters of footy) it was great to be back in the green and gold!

The following weeks before re-grading saw a lot of on-field success, both home and away. Everyone was loving their footy, and the hard work at training was paying off. The knowledge of the lyrics of the team song had become a bit rusty after the Summer break, but it all came back with a vengeance.

Round 7 was a ‘family’ round, playing a Prahran JFC side coached by the brother of our Coach. That, of course, meant that cousins were playing cousins as well. We played at Como, and the ground had to be cleared of the hot air balloons that had landed on the field about 30 minutes before.

The second half of the season saw the frequent flyer account balances of our team increase exponentially with seven of our players heading overseas for several weeks and we played every remaining game undermanned. We were very grateful for the younger brothers of some of our players, who relished the opportunity to play up from U8s.

As the season drew to a close, we all reflected on how much we’d enjoyed our second year as Rovers. The players had all gelled as a group, their skills had developed enormously and were a great reflection of the coaching, and their diligence and determination at training.

A BIG thank you to our Coach, Sam Van der Venne. Sam’s patience, commitment, consistency and preparation were amazing, and very much appreciated by all the players and their families. Sam was ably assisted by our Assistant Coach, Daniel Peterson, and our Runner, Martin Edwards. Our two volunteer umpires, Andrew Beasley and Grant Edmunds were fair to all, and very good at explaining the rules in the middle of the game.

And finally, to all the families of the U9 Yellow team, thank you for taking on all the game day roles so willingly and for your support of the team as a whole. I hope you enjoyed your post-football sleep in!

UNDER 8 (Green)

The Under 8 Green side had a great year playing very competitively throughout the whole season and demonstrating both their defensive and attacking capabilities and several opportunities to sing the Rovers song.

The squad of 25 players bonded well as a team and their football learning and development was outstanding throughout the year. All boys embraced the opportunity to learn footy playing in all positions on the ground which will set the foundation for their football years ahead.

The season culminated with the exciting Lighting Carnival competition where the boys got to enjoy their first feeling of “finals footy” where the team contested well - a great day was had by all.

Award winners:

Best and Fairest: Tom Hart Best and Fairest Runner up: George Aujard Most Determined: Harrison King Most Improved: Felix Arnott Coaches Award: Charlie Harber

Huge thanks to our team manager Louise (& James) Quinert, assistant coaches Paul Knight and Darren Blake, and runner Walter Occhuito and all the parents who helped in the various roles throughout the season to make it such a success.

A great year for the team and their families in 2019, with everyone looking forward to another great season in 2020 as they progress to U9s.

UNDER 8 (Violet)

“You should coach the Under 8 boys next Damo, you would be great at it, you are so patient with them”, said one of the mums to me last year as Auskick finished up for the season. I think she might have realised, more than I did, that patience was the best attribute that anyone attempting to coach under 8 boys could have! Little did I know, at the time, just how much patience was in fact required!

Having said that I had a great year with an exceptional group of kids. The skill progression of the squad from the start of the season to the end of season was put on show for all of the parents who turned up to watch their boy play in the lightning premiership. It was their best 3 games of the year, and they got better with every game they played. They worked really well together, played unselfishly, shared the ball around and most importantly displayed good sportsmanship.

My favourite game of the year was the very last game. We had a few of the kids who hadn’t scored a goal for the year so we put them up forward to give them an opportunity to score. Every time one of them got a goal the whole team ran to them and gave them hugs and high fives! That act alone proved to all the coaches and parents who turned up every week to help that we had done a good job and that the kids had learnt that football isn’t just about individual efforts, it’s about being part of a team.

I want to thank Steve Humphris who was my assistant coach, Dean, Scotty and Anton who were the runners, James, Andrew, Much and Shaun for umpiring, Jules and Mark for goal umpiring and Danny and Sash for being Team Managers. I also want to thank all the parents who helped every week with whatever tasks were assigned to them without a hint of a complaint. With all their help it made the season a great success.

The award winners were; Best and Fairest: Tom Gill Best and Fairest Runner up: Jake Donbavand Most Determined: Brodie Coyne Most Improved: Toby Wong Coaches Award: Finlay Taylor

It was a great year for the team and their families with everyone looking forward to another exciting season next year as they move up to the U9s.

Thanks

Damien Gill
