The Circuit A can of oil, or a can of worms? by Chris Rotvik (reprinted from Der Anzeiger, Oregon Region)

Oil / Controversy — Seemingly inseparable. A Driving Weekend to Morro Bay December 2007 January 26-27 Grand Prix Region Porsche Club of America

Something to look forward to right after the holidays

Morro Bay is a very attractive resort community and active fishing port.

Fantastic herd of Elephant Seals, up close, giving birth, nursing pups, breeding, and males fighting over harems.

Nearly two hundred miles of great Porsche roads.

Wonderful scenery, including seldom-seen parts of old rural California. $10.00 donation to ASUDEC (to be collected at dinner) Pass through one of the largest active oil fields in the USA Africas Sustainable Development Council

Where: 7:30am — Denny's at Grapevine exit on I-5 (6:30 for breakfast) Depart: 8:00am SHARP! — Fill your gas tank when you arrive Be prepared to leave Dennys at 0800 and arrive about 1100 in Morro Bay. A look around the waterfront before lunch, which is at Noon at the Great American Fish Company. Lunch will be by individual check.

After an hour lunch we drive just under an hour to the Elephant Seals. We have a docent to lead us around and explain things — No more than two hours, and an hour back to Morro Bay and the hotel (with enough time to clean up for dinner or poke around if you like)

Our hotel is the San Marcos Inn. You need to make your own reservations (800-772.7969) $109.00 for view room (includes breakfast). $79.00 for non-view (Marty recommends the view - and nicer rooms SIGN UP EARLY — ROOMS MAY BE LIMITED Tell them you are with the Porsche Club

Dinner is at DORN's Restaurant (a short walk from the hotel). Again, we will have individual checks.

For the Sunday return it is 3 hours from Morro Bay to Maricopa (using the Hwy 41, Hwy 101, Hwy 58, Hwy 33 route). It is a great Porsche drive over Hwy 58 (82 miles without services (including no rest rooms)). In Maricopa you have a choice: return the way we came (166 to I-5 and home (about 2 hours) or continue on Hwy 33 to Ojai). I estimate 2 hours to Ojai and another 2 back to Long Beach. The Sesbe Gorge and all on Hwy 33 is very scenic (you need to choose your route home after Maricopa)

RSVP: When you reserve your room, let Marty Goldsmith (preferably by e-mail) know so he can keep track of how many are going. Marty will e-mail a detailed set of driving instructions so no one should get lost, even if you become separated. Marty can be reached at [email protected] or 562-494-6350

October 8 — Another Outstanding, Monday Day Away from Work Drivers Ed/Autocross photos by Peter Ross, Greg White and Greg Schill story by Skip Carter

Michael Dolphin and Michelle Larsson are having waaayyyyy too much fun

Grid Management Team member Brita Goldsmith checking cars Timing Team members Greg Schill as they come to the grid and Carlos Chang in the timing tent The Day Away from Work Driver's Ed/Autocross events that we do at Streets of Willow are, without doubt, the most complicated and toughest events the Grand Prix Region produces each year. A lot of thought and planning goes into each of these, and the process is never ending.

The Autocross start/finish area was greatly improved in October and, because of suggestions form our participant feedback process, Michael Dolphin, Roger Lubeck, Greg we will make it better (spell that S A F E R) by moving the finish Schill, Carlos Chang and Curt Yaws helped Richard Clewett with Tech Inspections clocks back near the tower in May. This will increase the area available for cars to shut down and exit the track.

The single best source of information on how we did and where we can make improvements comes from the participants. We sent out a feedback request after each event and always get great feedback. Marty Goldsmith's Timing Team did a great Our number one priority is to produce a safe learning event, and job with Carlos Chang, Greg Schill and others the growth and development of our event management team allows us to do a better job at, literally, every event. I can't thank each of you enough, and I've tried to use the photographs on these page to show many of you in action. I especially want to thank Suesan Way for her tireless job as Registrar. That is absolutely the foundation for the event. Through the registration process we identify who the participants are, what their level of experience and needs are, who we have for an instructor base, etc. Before we ever leave home we have students matched up with instructors, drivers separated into run groups, driving sehedule worked out, jobs assigned, chalk talk organized, and dozens of other details worked out.

I want to also thank Circle Porsche for their continued sponsorship of our driving program. De Jur Jones and Roger Lubeck are always there to help As you can tell, there is a lot of work and a lot of organization that go into making one of these events. The opportunity to get your Chief Driving Instructor, Mike Mulligan using the map Porsche to a controlled, off street venue where you can learn about on the back of our event shirt, being held up by Brita car control and how to be a safer driver is something that doesn't Goldsmith from our Grid Management Team come along every day. Students are often amazed when they realize that they have spent all these years driving with their eyes focused about 5 feet in front of their hood, instead of down the road... And how much sooner you see things happening around you with that broader focus. Another often pleasant surprise from students is the power of Porsche brakes. Having an opportunity to really apply the brakes hard on the track is something that you do not want to do the first time in an emergency situation on the street. The better understanding you have of the capabilities of your car, the better equiped you will be if an emergency situation comes up on the street where you need to react quickly. You will certainly appreciate it when you realize you know where cars are around you, instead of Rick Mills having to all of a sudden try to figure it out when you don't have the time to do it.

To sum it up, if there was only one indicator of how well the day went, it would be the smiles on the faces of our 80+ drivers. Chief Tech Inspector, Richard Clewett Bob Bertrand Brian Cable Bob Holzinger

13 World'sThe Circuit First Hybrid Vehicle and the L.A. Auto Show photos and story by Skip Carter If you made it to the Porsche exhibit at the Los Ange- les Auto Show last month, you saw the first hybrid car ever built, the 1901 Lohner-Porsche electric car.

As an employee of the Jacob Lohner & Co in Vienna, Austria, the young integrated bat- tery-powered electric motors directly into the front- wheel hubs, producing one of the first front-wheel- drive cars. He later added an internal combustion gasoline engine to drive a generator, which charged the batteries. The Lohner-Porsche vehicle could reach a maximum speed of only about 35 miles an hour, but the proto-hybrid was born.

The picture below is a racing version of the front wheel driven, petrol-electric Lohner Porsche. It was entered in the 1900 "Semmering" race and is driven by Dr. Porsche himself.

GPXs Dale Cunningham and Michael Dolphin

The reason Porsche sent the 1901 Lohner-Porsche to the L.A. Auto Show was to accompany the North American debut of the new Cayenne Hybrid. There were two of the new Cayennes on display. The first was fully dressed, while the second had dozens of sections of body and dash and up- holstery removed and covered in clear plexiglas so you could actually see most of the hidden mechanics of the car. It was pretty fascinating. Also on display were the new 911 GT2 and the new 911 Turbo Cabriolet.

I'm not sure how Porsche managed it, but they are the only manufacturer at the show with their own room. Every year they do a spectacular job of creating an interesting setting You can see the electric motors for the new cars. It outclasses everything else at the show. Of integrated in to the wheel hub. Not bad course, I'm completely impartial in my judgement. for 1901. Ferdinand was in his early 20s when he created this vehicle.

15 The Circuit Breakfast Club Meeting Update — November 3 story and photos by Peter Ross With the holiday season quickly approaching, we would like to take this time to wish you a very safe and Happy Holidays.

The First Saturday Breakfast Club Meeting held at Ricky and Ronnie’s Cruise In Diner in November was just another great day to own a Porsche. Face the facts, any day is a great day to own a Porsche but, if you can jump in one and drive down to a Breakfast Club Meeting, you’re way ahead of the game.

As usual, we had an outstanding turnout and all of our at- Dan and Dave tending members thoroughly enjoyed themselves. New mem- Hockett bers Michael Kral arrived at the meeting in his 2004 arctic silver 40th Anniversary Porsche and Charles Weaver in his 1968 black . In addition to their nice cars, there were a host of other gorgeous Porsches that also showed up.

Among the November attendees were Bob Baddy, Dick Bar- ton, Joe Bryant, Elliot Chandler, Dale Cunningham, Michael Dolphin, Richard Elliott, Miles Folger, Albert Franco, Marty Goldsmith, Francois Gravigny, Lorenzo Gray, Jeff Haas, Dan Hockett, Dave Hockett, Alan Hosea, Patricia Geary Johnson, DeJur, Mike Kral, Karen and Ron LaForest, Karen and Bob Lewis, Roger Lubeck, Jules Metau, Pete Novak, Marty Pet- coff, Peter Ross, Ron Shannon, Dan Stern, Norm Stone and Charles Weaver.

Making a splash debut at the Breakfast Club Meeting this month was the Grand Prix Region’s new and improved “Goody Store” which is managed by DeJur and assisted by Bob Baddy. The first day of this new endeavor sold a signifi- cant number of shirts and license plate frames. Make sure to put next month’s Breakfast Club Meeting on your schedule so you can come out and buy some new gear.

Finally, we’re still out to break that magic 500-member mark, and we’re a lot closer than we thought we’d be at this time. So, take it upon yourself to transition into a Porsche Club of America Grand Prix Region Recruiter and talk to that person in the Porsche next to you at the red light. It only takes a brief Mike Kral moment to have them look us up on the internet. Tech Session Chair, Ron Shanon See you at the next Breakfast Club Meeting.

At 6:00 AM Thursday morning, Bob and Karen Lewis, Ron and Karen La Forest, and Shannon and I were to meet at the 405 & Western. “I put more than maximum pressure on him – I gave it all I had. With 200 horsepower less than the Audis, I think we gave everyone quite a show. We not only won our class championship, but we beat those guys overall eight times,” said Dumas, who celebrated his first ALMS drivers title.

“It’s been a wonderful season, and this the 11th win in 12 races. It brings back the glory days of the /30 for both Porsche and Penske Racing. It’s been a huge honor 's RS Spyder of Bruce Leitzinger and Andy to be a part of this program, and we believe this puts the Wallace behind a couple of GT cars exclamation point on a season which will put the Porsche RS Spyder right with the 917 in Porsche racing history,” said For those of you us not familiar with the American Le Mans Tim Cindric, president of Penske Racing. Series (ALMS), here's a little background: Inspired by the ultimate endurance test involving man and machine, the , the ALMS is the premium brand of motorsports in North America. It features some of the most technologically advanced sports cars in the world, including Acura, Aston Martin, Audi, Chevrolet, Courage, Ferrari, Lola, Mazda, Panoz, Porsche, Radical and Zytek. Driv- ers comprise a world-class roster, and the schedule takes in Flying Lizard #45 & 44 cars finished premier road racing venues from the opening race at Sebring, 4th & 7th at Laguna Seca continuing to locations like Mid-Ohio, Road America, our own Long Beach Grand Prix and ending up at Laguna Seca. Endurance races range from 45 minutes to 12 hours. There were 12 races on the 2007 schedule.

There are four classes of competition, two are the exotic and sophisticated Le Mans Prototypes (LMP1 and LMP2) and two are production-based Grand Touring cars (GT1 and GT2). LMP1 are purpose-built, closed-wheel cars that are among the most technologically developed and fastest sports cars in the world. LMP2 are smaller, less-powerful proto- types. GT1 cars are production models heavily modified for racing, while the GT2's have fewer racing modifications.

For the Series final race at Mazda Laguna Seca Raceway (covered by Greg White on page 19), and scored their eighth LMP2 win of the season in the Penske Racing Porsche RS Spyder. They clinched the drivers championship and finished second overall to the LMP1 Audi R-10. The Penske Racing Porsches scored eight straight overall wins during the season, beating the more powerful 12-cylinder Audis on both street course and traditional road circuits. And for the last hour of this race, Dumas chased the leading Audi, passing it twice in tight corners, but not quite able to make his lead stick.
