JANUARY 2005 Newsletter of the Federal Communications Bar Association 6th Annual Communications Law 101 on February 8 On the afternoon of February 8, 2005, the FCBA will present its annual COMM LAW 101 Comm Law 101 CLE Seminar, from AGENDA 2:00-6:00 p.m., at the Wiley Rein & Fielding Conference Center, 1776 K The Practical Basics Street, N.W. This afternoon-long event is targeted at attorneys who are for a Career in relatively new to practice and will Communications Law feature recognized experts in the field. Breakfast The program is worth two CLE credits. Congressman Charles “Chip” The two-hour program will feature a basic overview of contract drafting, including Pickering, Vice Chairman of the House general structure and drafting tips, followed by an in-depth discussion of Energy & Commerce Committee, will be provisions of interest, including arbitration, non-compete, choice of law, and our featured guest speaker at the termination provisions. Website: http://www.fcba.org This is up from $82,000 awarded to seven local students in OFFICERS 2003. As is evident from the video produced each year Harry C.Martin featuring the scholarship winners, this program has been the factor that has made it President possible for many of the recipients to attend college. Michele C.Farquhar President-Elect Much of the scholarship money was raised through the purchase of sponsored tables Jennifer A.Warren at the Chairman’s Dinner. This year the total proceeds to the Foundation from that Secretary event were $39,500. The Foundation’s annual golf tournament, the Charity Auction, Diane J.Cornell plus corporate and individual giving have increased the Foundation’s total budget to Assistant Secretary $230,000. James S.Blitz Treasurer The Foundation provides stipends for law students who take summer internships at Mark D.Schneider the FCC or other government entities. This past summer five law students received a Assistant Treasurer total of $15,700 through this program. A total of $10,600 was awarded to four interns for the summer of 2003. This program fosters interest in the communications law EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE field, and helps broaden the reach of local internship opportunities to students from Carolyn W.Brandon law schools outside the DC area. Sally A.Buckman Selina Y.Khan Cheryl A.Leanza The Foundation also sponsors monthly participation by our members at both Martha’s Laura H.Phillips Table and McKenna’s Wagon, volunteer organizations that serve Washington’s Bryan N.Tramont homeless population. And, the Foundation has sponsored a holiday gift drive under Ryan G.Wallach which over the past nine years FCBA members and friends have donated thousands of Sheryl J.Wilkerson Alexandra M.Wilson dollars worth of gifts to 1,200 people in the Washington area. Harry Wingo Christopher G.Wood This year’s Charity Auction, a joint venture with the Young Lawyers Committee, raised $70,000, all of which is going to the Charitable Coalition for Children with Cancer, a CHAPTER Washington,D.C.charity. And of course,much of the giving done for the Charity Auction REPRESENTATIVES is done by individual FCBA members and their employers, who each year come up with Ellen S.Agress a wide range of valuable prizes that produce higher and higher bidding totals. Judith A.Endejan DELEGATE TO AMERICAN These charitable programs help define the FCBA and add significantly to our culture. BAR ASSOCIATION Sponsoring college scholarships for needy students manifests the care our members R.Clark Wadlow have for the Washington community. And, the McKenna’s Wagon, Martha’s Table and holiday gift drive programs afford community service opportunities that go beyond EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR giving money. Our members’ support of all of these Foundation programs makes us Stanley D.Zenor much more than just another trade organization. You might say the Foundation provides a different dimension, if not a changed identity for the FCBA, for our DEPUTY DIRECTOR charitable side promotes a positive feeling about the association among our members. Heidi M.Kurtz This, in turn, makes the association cohesive and attractive to volunteers.
