And I don't remember the senior senator from Georgia defending this man's honor. And we're going to have more fights when it comes to the judiciary. And I'm going to put strict constructionists on the bench. And I expect people in the United States Senate from a great state like Georgia to do what Zell Miller did, and stood up and defended the honor and integrity of Judge Pickering. CO (5/15, Tully) reports Charles W. Pickering Sr. &stood a few yards from the Senate floor on Wednesday, chatting with old acquaintances. That was closer than he got to the floor in March, when the Democratic—controlled Judiciary Committee rejected his nomination to the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of the Appeals.8 But supporters &say Pickering may sit on that very court some day.8 Minority Leader Trent Lott, who & met with his longtime friend and fellow Mississippian later Wednesday, said that if Republicans regain control of the Senate in this year,s elections +He,ll be the first one confirmed.,8 Pickering, whose name &has become a rallying cry for Republicans angry at the pace of Senate action on President Bush,s judicial nominations, was in town to attend a judicial meeting. No electorate would ever vote for candidates pledging to dirty the water, pollute the air, deprive senior citizens of Social Security or strip health care coverage for people with preexisting conditions. So Republicans have chosen to pursue these goals through the federal courts, which essentially allows them to achieve their ends while flying under the radar.

    Journal of Moral Theology, Vol. 10, No. 1 (2021): 46–72 An Augustinian Correction to a Faulty Option: The Politics of Salt and Light Anthony Crescio INCE ITS PUBLICATION IN 2017, Rod Dreher’s The Benedict Option: A Strategy for Christians in a Post-Christian Nation has given rise to a cottage industry, including a wide range of S publications on the subject (either in support of or against) and conferences across the country. To be sure, a Christian perspective fully supports many elements in Dreher’s thought, like his calls for homes to become places of spiritual learning and growth,1 that institu- tions of Christian education take seriously their role in Christian for- mation,2 and the Church undergo a ressourcement type of renewal in all facets of its life.3 However, it is in the last area of ecclesiology where Dreher’s option ultimately fails in several ways because he does not grasp the full import of the sacramental ontology. While he rightly advocates a need for recovering it, he falls short in implementing it.4 His is, put simply, a failure of the imagination which has disastrous consequences for his understanding of how the church ought to engage in the political sphere. In order to demonstrate this failure, I adopt Dreher’s ressourcement methodology5 by engaging Augustine of Hippo as the primary inter- locutor and proceeding by way of four main steps. First, I discuss three ways Dreher’s work represents a failure of imagination. With the sec- ond step, I lay out Augustine’s sacramental metaphysics and corre- sponding ecclesiology.

    Trump Judges: Even More Extreme Than Reagan and Bush Judges September 3, 2020 Executive Summary In June, President Donald Trump pledged to release a new short list of potential Supreme Court nominees by September 1, 2020, for his consideration should he be reelected in November. While Trump has not yet released such a list, it likely would include several people he has already picked for powerful lifetime seats on the federal courts of appeals. Trump appointees' records raise alarms about the extremism they would bring to the highest court in the United States – and the people he would put on the appellate bench if he is reelected to a second term. According to People For the American Way’s ongoing research, these judges (including those likely to be on Trump’s short list), have written or joined more than 100 opinions or dissents as of August 31 that are so far to the right that in nearly one out of every four cases we have reviewed, other Republican-appointed judges, including those on Trump’s previous Supreme Court short lists, have disagreed with them.1 Considering that every Republican president since Ronald Reagan has made a considerable effort to pick very conservative judges, the likelihood that Trump could elevate even more of his extreme judicial picks raises serious concerns. On issues including reproductive rights, voting rights, police violence, gun safety, consumer rights against corporations, and the environment, Trump judges have consistently sided with right-wing special interests over the American people – even measured against other Republican-appointed judges. Many of these cases concern majority rulings issued or joined by Trump judges.
