Botanist Sends Plant Seeds to ISS 21 June 2006 explains Kiss. The seed cassettes will be flown inside the European Modular Cultivation System (EMCS), an experiment facility for biological investigations under microgravity. A large (655 pound) incubator, EMCS provides control over atmosphere, lighting and humidity of growth chambers. Tropi will be the first experiment performed in the EMCS, which was developed by the European Space Agency. The experimental containers (EC) were developed by Kiss’ group and NASA, based on a design by project co-principal investigator Richard Edelmann, director of Miami’s electron microscopy facility. The facility at NASA Ames includes world-class ground based microgravity testing labs including the 2D Granite lab and the 3D Microgravity Testing Facility (MGTF) lab. Both labs provide unique and important testing capabilities increasing the reliability of what’s sent to the space station. The spacecraft launched from a Russian-leased manned-space facility in the frigid steppes of Kazakhstan at 6:12 p.m. (1212 GMT). It took off atop a towering Russian rocket and went into orbit about 15 minutes later. American Tom Marshburn, Russian Roman Romanenko and Canadian Chris Hadfield will travel for two days in the capsule, before docking with the mammoth space station where three other people are already on board. -
