A crash at Balclutha last week highlights a major shortage of St John volunteers in the South Otago town, concerned employees of the emergency services organ- isation say. New Zealand Police at Bal- clutha were called to a traffic acci- dent on the Essex - Yarmouth street intersection north of the town on Monday last week, at about 1240pm. However, as the Balclutha-based St John ambu- lance was in Dunedin on another call, Balclutha Volunteer Fire Brigade members were called as first responders. Balclutha St John station man- ager Stuart Holgate confirmed that no volunteers were available that day to attend the scene, which involved a 62-year-old Bal- clutha woman, who was driving a scooter along Essex St, when she collided with a car. The Balclutha woman received only minor injuries, and was transported by police car to Clutha Health First in Balclutha where she received treatment. Holgate said it highlighted a situation in which he was becom- ing increasingly uncomfortable. ‘‘We haven’t got the staff avail- able. The calls are increasing and the number of jobs are increasing. About 120 people attended the recent Balclutha Stock Car Club reunion, held at the South Otago Town and Country Club. Ex-members and their families came from as far away as the United States, Australia, and throughout Canterbury, Otago and Southland for the reunion, former Balclutha Stock Car Club member Michael Keach said.
