Local Produce Market for Storrington As part of the District Food & Drink Festival, Storrington Bakers & Makers are delighted to be organis- ing a local produce market at the Anchor Inn on Saturday 20th September. Showcasing anything and everything that can be found within a 15 mile radius of Storrington, there will be a wonderful selection of approximately 25 stallholders selling all things from wonderful artisan bread, locally reared meats and craft beers through to jewellery, skincare products and handmade keepsakes. On top of this we’re hoping to arrange face painting and crafting activities for the children and will be looking for local talent from the surrounding area to perform at the market. Several of the Storrington businesses will also be organising their own locally themed initiatives.

Opening to the public at 10.30am and running until 3.30pm come and celebrate our local talent by making this part of a Storrington shopping trip on Saturday 20th September. Contact: Rachel Swansborough 07477 524418 / [email protected]

YS 4 Your Storrington September 2014 • www.yourstorrington.co.uk Storrington Horticultural Society’s Summer Show to celebrate their 150 year anniversary Update We knew it would be a challenge to replicate the first flower show in Storrington of 1864 but with a dedicated committee and a lot of hard work, the result was stunning.

The village hall is much smaller than the original ‘ Meeting House’ venue so it took a full day to recreate the Victorian setting. The hall was decorated throughout with bunting, flags and beautiful displays of flowers which would have been in existence in 1864 The entries on the day exceeded all expectations with exhibits not only of flowers and vegetables but of nosegays and posies, handicrafts and entries by children which included a collec- tion of snail shells, different grasses and embroided hankerchiefs.

People flocked in when the doors opened and continued to do so all the afternoon being welcomed by the com- mittee all of whom were in costume. In the adjoining room people enjoyed tea and many varieties of home made cakes while listening to the country style music played by a local group.

Everyone said how much they enjoyed the afternoon and all of us agreed that the effort was well worth it. A big thankyou to all for helping to make it a great celebration for Storrington’s Horticultural Society. Exciting new look on the way for Impulse Leisure Chanctonbury

Work recommences on Sullington Warren this month after the summer break where volunteers are invited to join us in the control of gorse that threatens to invade the various paths.

The gorse is an attractive plant that more or less flowers throughout the year and provides impregnable sites for nesting birds and the like but can become quite invasive in an area like the ‘Warren if not kept in check.

The heather in certain areas also needs attention after the beetle attack last year that has left its mark. Hopefully the millions of heather seeds that have been scattered over the years will come to life after a bit of encouragement. The Sandgate Park volunteers have been working hard throughout the year by removing unwanted saplings from the heather area and pushing back the wild rhododendron bushes. If you feel like joining in this well worth activity with the ‘Society, where the camaraderie and healthy exercise in the open air cannot help but do you good, then please give Jacinta a call or simply come along as we will only be too pleased to see you.
