Commonly referred to as ‘power houses’, the primary function of properties such as Chatsworth in Derbyshire is understood as the consolidation and reproduction of aristocratic power. In this narrative of upper-class supremacy, the communities that lived on these estates are conceptually divided in binary terms of upstairs and downstairs, master and servant, landlord and tenant, the powerful and the powerless. This thesis problematises the concept of absolute power on the country estate by drawing on the work of sociologists such as Pierre Boudieu and Anthony Giddens, to ask how power might be approached in more nuanced terms. By defining power as an individual’s capacity to effect change, in however small a way, it accesses new perspectives and suggests how fresh relevance can be drawn from archival material. This thesis finds that far from being insular and isolated, Chatsworth was a microcosm of English society in which daily interactions played out across a diverse community. It therefore speaks to wider issues of class and gender tensions, and individual agency within institutional structures in nineteenth-century Britain. This thesis understands the symbolic power of the landowning family as part of the sociocultural context, rather than the substance, of social relations on the country estate. It is interested in the experiences of servants, staff and tenants not as facilitators of an upper-class lifestyle, but as individuals with their own social and material aspirations and agency. The chapters examine all areas of the estate, from the village to the household, in order to chart a holistic narrative of this dynamic country house community and its residents during a time of significant local and national change. 3 Acknowledgements My experience as part of the ‘From Servants to Staff’ project has been a privilege, and I have many people to thank for making the last four years so rewarding and enjoyable. Despite extensive improvements to the villages, some individuals had been accused of immoral and illegal activities. This letter about the behaviour in ‘our’ villages did not come from a family member or upper-class friend of the Duke, but from head gardener Joseph Paxton.

The township contains 2255A. 3R. 25P. of land, and in 1851 had 60 houses and 346 inhabitants, of whom 160 were males and 186 females; rateable value £2598 2s. 6d. His Grace the Duke of Devonshire is sole owner. The Church, dedicated to St. Peter, is situated in the centre of the village on elevated ground, and is approached by a flight of steps. It is a venerable stone edifice, with nave, chancel. side aisles, and square tower containing 4 bells. It was given at an early period by Fulcher, ancestor of the Shirleys, to the monastery of Rochester, in Staffordshire. In the chancel is a very elegant monument to the first Earl of Devonshire, which is composed of several figures the size of life sculptured in relief, and of the most elaborate workmanship. A table monument has two recumbent figures, one clothed in the dress of the times, the other representing a skeleton. “ There is something,” says Mr. Rhodes, “strikingly impressive in this representation of a man who appears to have just passed from time into eternity, with all the habiliments of life about him, and the bare ribbed image of Death, which lies at his side, awfully intimating the transition that must soon be made.     The Crystal Palace The Crystal Palace was a cast-iron and plate-glass structure originally The Crystal Palace built in Hyde Park, London, to house the Great Exhibition of 1851. More than 14,000 exhibitors from around the world gathered in its 990,000-square-foot (92,000 m2) exhibition space to display examples of technology developed in the Industrial Revolution. Designed by Joseph Paxton, the Great Exhibition building was 1,851 feet (564 m) long, with an interior height of 128 feet (39 m).[1] The invention of the cast plate glass method in 1848 made possible the production of large sheets of cheap but strong glass, and its use in the Crystal Palace created a structure with the greatest area of glass ever seen in a building and astonished visitors with its clear walls and ceilings that did not require interior lights.     RURAL DISCONTENT IN DERBYSHIRE 1830·1850 Alan Frank Jones Submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of History University of Sheffield January 2004 ii Alan Frank Jones RURAL DISCONTENT IN DERBYSlllRE 1830-1850 ABSTRACT Social protest, especially in agricultural regions, has occupie~ and caused considerable debate among, historians for many years. This thesis seeks to add to this debate, by looking at various forms of protest in Derbyshire between 1830 and 1850. This thesis examines three aspects of criminal activity: poaching, arson and animal maiming. It contends that none of these crimes can simply be categorised as acts of protest. In conjunction with an investigation of these three crimes, acts of protest such as strikes and episodes of reluctance to conform are also discussed. It argues that the motives behind various criminal activities and anti-authority behaviour were varied and complex. Arson and animal maiming were rarely co-ordinated, mostly they were individual attacks. However, on a few occasions both arson and animal maiming were directed against certain people. In the instances of poaching, there were more proven cases of gang participation than in either arson or animal maiming, with groups of men raiding game preserves. However, the great majority of raids were individual undertakings. What is more, poaching was carried out on a greater scale throughout the county than either arson or animal maiming. This thesis seeks to put these activities into the context of economic and social change in Derbyshire between 1830 and 1850. It maintains that there was a breaking down of the old social order.

HOUSE PLAN - Ground Floor William, 1st Duke of Devonshire built the Painted Hall between 1689 and 1694, the only original feature is the painted decoration on the walls and ceiling. Whilst still Earl of Devonshire he chose to flatter the monarch by decorating the hall with scenes from the life of Julius Caesar, he was elevated to Duke in the year the room was completed. A house has been standing here since the 1550s. It was built for Bess of Hardwick and Sir William Cavendish. Together they established the Cavendish family line from which the earls and dukes of Devonshire are descended. Bess persuaded Cavendish to buy the Chatsworth Estate in 1549. Something to Share... The inscription above the fire was placed by the 6th Duke on completion of his renovation of this room in 1840. There is a translation underneath. He was educated at New College, Oxford, and then entered politics. He was a Whig MP for Lostwithiel (1721- 1724), Grampound (1724-1727), and Hungtingdonshire (1727-1729), until his father’s death sent him to the House of Lords as Duke of Devonshire in 1729. Other offices held by the 3rd Duke included: Lord Steward of the Household (1723-1737 and 1745-1749); Privy Counsellor (from 1731); Lord Privy Seal (1731-1733); and Lord Lieutenant of Ireland (1737-1744). He was appointed a Knight of the Garter in 1733. In the same year Devonshire House, the London residence of the Dukes of Devonshire, was destroyed by fire, and the 3rd Duke commissioned the architect and designer William Kent to rebuild and furnish the house in the Palladian style. In 1718, the 3rd Duke married Catherine Hoskins (c.1700-1777), the daughter of a City businessman. They had seven children: Lady Caroline; William, later 4th Duke of Devonshire; Lord George Augustus; Lady Elizabeth; Field Marshal Lord Frederick; Lord John; and Lady Rachel. The Duke and Duchess had a temporary separation in 1748-9 due to the Duchess’s disapproval of the bride chosen by their son and heir, William, Marquess of Hartington.

With emphasis not just on their heritage and conservation but their potential as well, public parks could contribute not only to the social and recreational life of our urban areas, but also to the enhancement of environmental sustainability and the enrichment of the biodiversity of urban areas. A new design approach would be desirable for the management of our historical green spaces and to encourage a wider range of people to return to them. is paper comments on park use studies, contemporary park use investigations and student design works for parks in the future, using Paxton’s methods/approach/ideas for inspiration in the development of our historic city parks. And examines to what extent Paxton’s design ideas are applicable in the 21st century.
