  • The Beauceron
    The Beauceron The Beauceron, also known as Berger de Beauce and Bas Rouge, is the largest of the French sheepdogs and was developed solely in France with no foreign crosses. The Beauceron is closely related to the longhaired Briard or Berger de Brie. The first mention of a dog which matches the Beauceron’s description is found in a manuscript dated 1587. In 1809 Abbé Rozier wrote an article on French herding dogs. It was he who first described the differences in type and used the terms Berger de la Brie for long coated dogs and Berger de la Beauce for short coated dogs. The name Beauceron was used for the first time by Pierre Megnin in his 1888 book on war dogs and the first Berger de Beauce was registered with the Societe Central Canine in September 1893. The French Club Les Amis du Beauceron (CAB), was founded in 1922 by Pierre Megnin and he together with Emmanuel Boulet developed the original breed standard for the Beauceron. The CAB has since guided the development of the breed in its native France, always keeping a watchful eye on the preservation of the breed’s herding and working ability. During the early part of the 19th century large flocks of sheep were common and the Beauceron was indispensable for the shepherds of France; two dogs were sufficient to tend to flocks of 200 to 300 head of sheep. Sheep production experienced a sharp decline during the later half of the 19th century and by the second half of the 20th century was only a phantom of its past.

    YOU BE THE JUDGE By Robert Cole From Dogs in Canada, December 1988 THE AFGHAN HOUND Three of these six Afghan Hounds are real life Group winners; in fact, two are Best in Show winners. These three serve to illustrate certain characteristics which set the breed apart. They also serve to illustrate three personal type preferences. You can, but it is not necessary that you correctly identify which three are the real life winners. The other three are graphic departures based on the real life Afghans. Two represent departures from the official CKC description and one represents a departure from depicted reality towards the worded ideal. Combined with reality, these three also help formulate an image of perceived ideal. You be the judge. Let’s pretend they are all real life Afghan Hounds and this is their first show. They are competing in the Open Dog class. To minimize distractions I have given them all a short, closer saddle (a traditional breed characteristic) over beige without any white (white markings especially on the head are undesirable). Select a first place, a second place, a third place and a fourth place. FIRST PLACE Based on a breed standard which calls for: “Height at the shoulders to equal the distance from the chest to the buttocks,” I would have to go with Dog A. This Afghan Hound’s height to length in profile must be close to ideal, however, it is not one of the BIS or Group winners. Dog A is one of the imaginary examples. Dog A is actually real life Dog C with a piece taken out of the centre of his body equal to the width of the back of the hand illustrated supporting his tail.

Some of the new skills that you can learn in Responsibility the 4-H Companion Animal project are listed on the left. Check your favorites and then work with your 4-H leaders and parents to make a 4-H project plan of what you want to do and learn this year. Cats use many of their body parts to communicate with us. The ears, eyes, head, whiskers, tail and paws are used by cats to express themselves. They also use their "voices" to tell us if they are happy or mad. Study the actions below. Circle the happy face or mad face to show how the feline is feeling. The cat is purring. The cat has moved his/her ears forward and up. The whiskers appear to be bristled. The cat’s ears are fl attened back against its head. The cat “chirps.” The cat hisses. The cat’s tail is bushed out. The cat is thumping his/her tail. The cat is kneeding his or her paws.
