Shortly after graduating from Queens College, Hamlisch produced his first of more than 40 motion picture musical scores. During his incomparable and illustrious career, Hamlisch was well-known for his brilliance and musical versatility whose achievements encompassed musical theatre, film, television, pop, and symphonic music. He eventually became just one of two people to ever win an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony, and Pulitzer Prize. In his later years, Hamlisch became an ambassador for music and a champion for the next generation of composers, traveling the country and giving talks at schools. • The Most Admired* What Do Clint Eastwood, Jimmy
The Most Admired* What do Clint Eastwood, Jimmy Carter, and Warren Buffett have in common? No, this isn’t a setup for a pop culture joke, but rather a partial list of the most admired Americans over age 75. Provided with the names of 23 major personalities in this age bracket and asked to select the two they most admire, Americans compile a list that is at once diverse and homogenous; topping the list are two actors, two former presidents, a man of the cloth, and a financial wizard turned philanthropist. All remarkably accomplished, but all male. Clint Eastwood ranks highest overall, with 23% rating him as their most admired public figure over age 75; among men that proportion rises to 30%, and he reaches 33% among Republicans despite his unusual 2012 GOP convention appearance, making him that group’s second highest choice. Morgan Freeman runs a close second with 21% overall, but he is the clear favorite among both African Americans (40%) and Millennials (33%). Jimmy Carter finishes third overall with 19%, but he tops Democrats’ list (33%). Similarly, George H.W. Bush is number one among Republicans (36%), and he finishes fourth overall with 17%. Rounding out the most admired list in double digits are Billy Graham (16%) and Warren Buffett (13%). Buffett’s popularity lands him in second place among college-educated adults and affluent Americans. Billy Graham is relatively well loved among those over age 50. The three most admired women cross the ideological spectrum—former First Lady Nancy Reagan (9%) on the right, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg (7%) on the left, and TV newswoman Barbara Walters (9%) in the middle.

AA: Upon graduation, what post-secondary path did you take and why? Will: Upon graduating from Timber Creek Regional High School in 2007, I decided to attend Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. After completing their “5- Week Summer Program” in the Summer of 2005, I knew that there was something about this institution that uniquely suited my needs, my passion, and my dreams. I was always interested in traditional and contemporary music, as well as the ever-evolving technology that was used in its creation. Berklee truly felt like the only place where I could fully immerse myself in the study of music and music technology, while being surrounded by thousands of other scholars who were passionate about music or the music industry.

  • The Aesthetics of Hate Music
The Aesthetics of Hate Music By Keith Kahn-Harris Introduction The expression of hatred in music is, for many people, something intrinsically worrisome. From Nazi skinhead music to homophobic reggae, hate music seems to demand close watching at least and direct censorship at most. This is perfectly understandable given contemporary concerns about hate speech and in many ways the desire not to let hate-filled music pass without comment is a laudable one. However, I want to argue that the terms of the debate about hate and music are all too frequently rooted in certain, very questionable, ideas about musical aesthetics and that as a consequence some of the complexities surrounding issues regarding hatred and music tend to be ignored. In particular I wish to question the tacit assumption behind much writing on music and hate that it is a prioria problem. That is, that hatred and music simply do not go together and when they do come together the consequences can only be worrying. In fact, this assumption is historically specific and open to question and contestation, with important consequences for our understanding of music and hate The legitimacy of hatred In western societies at least, the development in the nineteenth century of a particular musical aesthetic has had far-reaching consequences (Chanan 1994). That is, the resurrection of the Platonic idea that music should ideally represent a form of transcendental perfection. In an impure world of lust, conflict and hatred, music should ideally represent the world as it ought to be, a world that is whole, perfect, free of messy bodily imperfections and antagonism.

  • Become a Smarter Thinker
Inquiries: Pamela Wallin, Box 581, Wadena, Saskatchewan, S0A 4J0 | [email protected] | 306-338-9045 BECOME A SMARTER THINKER “If you look at the three most important things in life – it’s like a triangle: the top is values - personal values, spiritual values, religious values; then you have health; the third is thinking. People spend a lot of time on health but how often do you hear someone say “I’m interested in becoming a better thinker?” Edward de Bono Thinking smarter, unlike staying stupid or keeping an open mind, is really about thinking in a different way. This idea has captivated me for years. How do we think? What’s the difference between mind and brain? So I’ve put the questions, time and gain, to artists, Nobel Prize Winners, high tech gurus and to the world’s leading thinker on thinking. Dr.de Bono has written more than fifty books, he teaches thinking to Nobel Prize winners and he discovered the concept called lateral thinking which he explains this way: “You can’t dig a hole in a different place by digging the same hole deeper.” As for becoming a smarter thinker: “It’s like a car – you can have a powerful engine, good suspension – that’s the potential of the car. An intelligent brain also has a lot of potential – the neurons work faster. But the way you drive the car makes all the difference. So does the way you use your brain – and that’s the thinking skill.” He was so smart I just wanted to hug him or at the very least, hope that the prediction of another brainiac would come true.
