Ruth Prawer Jhabvala's Adapted Screenplays
Absorbing the Worlds of Others: Ruth Prawer Jhabvala’s Adapted Screenplays By Laura Fryer Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements of a PhD degree at De Montfort University, Leicester. Funded by Midlands 3 Cities and the Arts and Humanities Research Council. June 2020 i Abstract Despite being a prolific and well-decorated adapter and screenwriter, the screenplays of Ruth Prawer Jhabvala are largely overlooked in adaptation studies. This is likely, in part, because her life and career are characterised by the paradox of being an outsider on the inside: whether that be as a European writing in and about India, as a novelist in film or as a woman in industry. The aims of this thesis are threefold: to explore the reasons behind her neglect in criticism, to uncover her contributions to the film adaptations she worked on and to draw together the fields of screenwriting and adaptation studies. Surveying both existing academic studies in film history, screenwriting and adaptation in Chapter 1 -- as well as publicity materials in Chapter 2 -- reveals that screenwriting in general is on the periphery of considerations of film authorship. In Chapter 2, I employ Sandra Gilbert’s and Susan Gubar’s notions of ‘the madwoman in the attic’ and ‘the angel in the house’ to portrayals of screenwriters, arguing that Jhabvala purposely cultivates an impression of herself as the latter -- a submissive screenwriter, of no threat to patriarchal or directorial power -- to protect herself from any negative attention as the former. However, the archival materials examined in Chapter 3 which include screenplay drafts, reveal her to have made significant contributions to problem-solving, characterisation and tone. -

Suddenly the power goes out; no one knows why. No electricity, no gasoline. Their solar power system isn’t working. Over the following days, the radio reports a thousand theories: technical breakdowns, terrorism, disease and uncontrolled violence across the continent. Then, one day, the radio stops broadcasting. Absolute silence. Step by ominous step, everything that Nell, a would-be academic, and Eva, a hard working contemporary dancer, have come to rely on is stripped away: parental protection, information, food, safety, friends, lovers, music -- all gone. They are faced with a world where rumor is the only guide, trust is a scarce commodity, gas is king and loneliness is excruciating. To battle starvation, invasion and despair, Nell and Eva fall deeper into a primitive life that tests their endurance and bond. Ultimately, the sisters must work together to survive and learn to discover what the earth will provide. -

Two women are about to find out. In the sophisticated and heartfelt comedy Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day, Academy Award winner Frances McDormand plays the film’s title role opposite Academy Award nominee Amy Adams (star of the blockbuster Enchanted). The cast also includes Golden Globe Award nominee Lee Pace (of the hit American series Pushing Daisies), Ciarán Hinds (There Will Be Blood), Shirley Henderson (the Harry Potter films), Mark Strong (Stardust), and screen newcomer Tom Payne. In 1939 London, Miss Guinevere Pettigrew (played by Ms. McDormand) is a middle-aged governess who finds herself once again unfairly dismissed from her job. Without so much as severance pay, Miss Pettigrew realizes that she must – for the first time in two decades – seize the day. This she does, by intercepting an employment assignment outside of her comfort level – as “social secretary.” Arriving at a penthouse apartment for the interview, Miss Pettigrew is catapulted into the glamorous world and dizzying social whirl of an American actress and singer, Delysia Lafosse (Ms. Adams). Within minutes, Miss Pettigrew finds herself swept into a heady high-society milieu – and, within hours, living it up. -

Laika @ 10: Meet the ‘Laikans’ Variety Staff
Laika @ 10: Meet the ‘Laikans’ Variety Staff COURTESY OF LAIKA ANIMATION STUDIO DECEMBER 15, 2015 | 06:00AM PT Four of the artists behind Laika's unique look Chris Butler (pictured far left) Writer & Head of Story, ‘Kubo and the Two Strings’ Chris Butler still has a drawing he made of an elephant when he was a 2-year-old in Liverpool. “My parents were astounded because I drew the legs in perspective,” laughs the Laika story guru, who started out in 2D animation, only to be seduced by stop-motion while working on Tim Burton’s “Corpse Bride.” “That was a big learning experience for me because it made me think like a filmmaker for the first time. It wasn’t so much whatever I can draw; it was, ‘Where can we put the camera?’ ” He went on to co-direct Laika’s 2012 “ParaNorman,” based on an original script — a supernaturally tinged, small-town empathy fable he cooked up while working as the storyboard supervisor on “Coraline.” His next script for Laika is also an original: “Kubo and the Two Strings,” which incorporates his love for mythic pics like “Clash of the Titans.” “It seemed like here is an opportunity to have these grand epic battles with giant monsters,” he says. Chris is represented by attorney Rob Szymanski at Eclipse Law. — Peter Debruge Deborah Cook (pictured second from left) Costume Designer Deborah Cook says it was a “happy accident” that she wound up creating costumes for stop motion. As a sculpture student in London she created upholstered art pieces with wood and metal armatures.
