SL Benfica have not met Olympique de Marseille since the semi-finals of the 1989/90 European Champion Clubs' Cup, and will hope the result of that tie augurs well for their UEFA Europa League round of 16 meeting. Previous meetings • In that encounter, Sven-Göran Eriksson's Benfica beat Gérard Gili's Marseille on away goals, following a 2-1 away defeat and a 1-0 home win. • The teams for the second leg in Lisbon on 18 April 1990 were: Benfica: Silvino, José Carlos, Samuel, Veloso, Aldair, Thern (Vata, 53), Vítor Paneira, Hernâni, Lima (Pacheco, 53), Valdo, Magnusson. Marseille: Castaneda, Amoros, Di Meco (Diallo, 87), Sauzée, Mozer, Germain, Deschamps, Tigana, Papin, Francescoli, Waddle (Vercruysse, 77). • Current Marseille coach Didier Deschamps played in both legs. • Benfica went on to lose the final 1-0 to AC Milan in Vienna, Frank Rijkaard scoring the only goal. Match background • Benfica's record in 16 European games against French opposition reads W7 D4 L5 (W5 D3 L0 at home). • Since meeting Portuguese opponents for the first time in that semi-final against Benfica, Marseille have twice been pooled with FC Porto in the UEFA Champions League group stage. Their record in six matches against Portuguese sides reads W1 D1 L4 (W0 D0 L3 in ). They have not won in their last five meetings with Portuguese Liga opponents. • Benfica have won all five of their European home outings this season, with a 4-0 triumph over Hertha BSC Berlin in the round of 32 bringing their Estádio do Sport Lisboa e Benfica aggregate scoreline up to 17-1 for 2009/10. They are thus averaging well over three goals in every home game. • Marseille are unbeaten in their last three away missions – two wins and a draw – since losing 3-0 at Real Madrid CF in this season's UEFA Champions League group stage. Team facts • The winners of the final two editions of the UEFA Cup (FC Zenit St. Petersburg in 2007/08 and FC Shakhtar Donetsk in 2008/09) both beat Marseille in the knockout phase en route to their final successes. • Marseille midfielder Lucho González is returning to Portugal for the first time since he left Porto in the summer. The Argentinian was a popular player at the Estádio do Dragão, earning the nickname 'El Comandante' (The Commandant) for his influence on team-mates. • Benfica forward Weldon played with Marseille's at FC Sochaux-Montbéliard in the 2005/06 season. • Benfica's Spanish midfielder Javi García could find himself up against team-mates from his days at Real Madrid: he played alongside Fernando Morientes in the 2004/05 campaign and served with Gabriel Heinze during the 2008/09 season.

• Argentinian defender Heinze, who will miss both legs due to a leg injury, spent part of the 1998/99 season at Portuguese outfit Sporting Clube de Portugal. • César Peixoto took on Marseille with Porto, featuring in a 3-2 UEFA Champions League group-stage win in France on 22 October 2003. • Benfica's Óscar Cardozo is the UEFA Europa League's second most prolific scorer this season with six goals. Fernando Llorente of eliminated Athletic Club boasts the same total, while Werder Bremen's leads the pack on eight. • Benfica's Ángel Di María has produced more assists than any player since the start of the group stage, setting up a total of six strikes. • The tie concludes at the Stade Vélodrome on 18 March. The draw for the quarter-finals will be staged the following day.

A fifth-placed Liga finish prompted Benfica to lure him back to Lisbon in summer 2009.

Olympique de Marseille: Didier Deschamps Date of birth: 15 October 1968 Nationality: French Playing career: FC Nantes, Olympique de Marseille (twice), FC Girondins de Bordeaux, Juventus, Chelsea FC, Valencia CF Coaching career: AS Monaco FC, Juventus, Olympique de Marseille • A product of Nantes' highly-rated youth system, Deschamps had trophy success with Marseille as a defensive midfielder, winning the league in 1990 and 1992 and captaining them to UEFA Champions League success in 1993. • Joined Juve in 1994 and went on to win the UEFA Champions League again in 1996, adding three Serie A titles, a Coppa Italia and a European/South American Cup. Left in 1999 for Chelsea, staying one season and winning the FA Cup, before ending his career with a year in Valencia, watching from the bench as they lost the 2001 UEFA Champions League final to FC Bayern München. • Captained France to victory on home soil in 1998 FIFA World Cup and at UEFA EURO 2000™, retiring that year with 103 caps. • Started coaching career in 2001 with Monaco, winning the League Cup in 2003 and reaching the UEFA Champions League final a year later, going down to José Mourinho's FC Porto. Resigned in September 2005 and joined his old club Juventus, then in Serie B, the following June. Resigned after securing promotion back to Serie A in May 2007. • Appointed Marseille coach in May 2009, replacing Erik Gerets on a two-year contract.

The UEFA Cup evolved from the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, and was first contested as the UEFA Cup in 1971/72. This season the UEFA Cup has been reborn as the UEFA Europa League. The new name brings major changes to the competition, which has a new 48-team group stage with centralised marketing of broadcast rights, a presenting sponsor - Spanish car manufacturer SEAT - and an official matchball in addition to centralised sponsorship from the knockout stage and a new logo and visual identity. • Disciplinary information: As a rule, a player who is sent off is suspended for the next match in a UEFA club competition. The Control and Disciplinary Body is entitled to augment this punishment. In the case of repeated cautions, from the group stage a player is suspended for one match after three cautions in three different matches, as well as following any subsequent odd-numbered caution (fifth, seventh, ninth, etc). Single yellow cards and pending suspensions are always carried forward either to the next stage of the competition or to another club competition in the current season. • Locally-trained players rule: In February 2005, UEFA announced the 'A' list that teams submit for UEFA club competitions will continue to be limited to 25 players, and from the 2008/09 season at least eight places are reserved for players trained by the club's own football academy of which half can be players trained by other clubs from within the same association of the said club. The 'B' list also continues to exist – involving an unlimited number of Under-21 players who have been at the club for any uninterrupted period of two years since their 15th birthday. A club-trained player is defined as a player who has been registered for a minimum of three seasons with the club between the age of 15 and 21, whereas an association-trained player is one who has been registered for at least three seasons by the club or by other clubs affiliated to the same association between the age of 15 and 21. • Away goals rule: For matches played under the cup (knockout) system, the team which scores the greater aggregate of goals in the two matches qualifies for the next round. If the two teams involved in a tie score the same number of goals over the two legs, the team which scores more away goals qualifies for the next stage. If this procedure does not produce a result, i.e, if the two teams score the same number of goals at home and away, extra time of two periods of 15 minutes shall be played at the end of the second leg. If during extra time, both teams score the same number of goals, away goals count double (i.e. the visiting club qualifies). If no goals are scored during extra time, penalty kicks determine which team qualifies. • Player registration: UEFA regulations state that for all UEFA Europa League matches from the start of the round of 32, a club may register a maximum of three new eligible players within their squad of 25 for the remaining matches in the current competition. One player from the above quota of three who has played UEFA club competition matches for another competing club in the current season may exceptionally be registered, provided that the player has not been fielded by another club in the UEFA Europa League this season or by a club that has transferred from the UEFA Champions League to the UEFA Europa League following the group stage. • Assistant referees experiment: The 144 UEFA Europa League group-stage games were overseen by six match officials, in an experiment endorsed by the International Football Association Board (IFAB), with two additional assistant referees taking up positions alongside each goal. The additional assistant referees provided two extra pairs of eyes to monitor the game, informing the referee of incidents that he may otherwise have missed. • Disclaimer: Although UEFA has taken all reasonable care that the information contained within this document is accurate at the time of publication, no representation or guarantee (including liability towards third parties), expressed or implied, is made as to its accuracy, reliability or completeness.
