My dear parishioners and friends,

“Peace be with you!” II

We continue our meditation on the Eucharist answering the question: “What does the word Transubstantiation mean ? This word refers to the miraculous change of the whole substance of the bread and wine during the Eucharist into the whole substance of the Body and Blood of Christ. This change the Holy Catholic Church has fittingly called transubstantiation. The said: “The underlying essence of the bread and wine are believed to be changed, while they retain only the appearance, taste, odor, and texture of bread and wine… Under the consecrated species of bread and wine Christ himself, living and glorious, is present in a true, real, and substantial manner: his Body and his Blood, with his Soul and his Divinity” (Council of Trent: DS 1640; 1651).

During the Eucharist Jesus gives Himself to us, not in a symbolic way, but as real flesh and blood. Referring to the article of last weekend, I know that many people, even today, find it difficult believing that it is really the Flesh of Jesus and His Blood that we eat and drink. I can understand our difficulty in believing in the Real Presence of Jesus in the Mass. We don’t see any change in the appearance of bread and wine. There is no difference in the taste. The appearance and taste do not change, but the substance – that which makes it what it is – has changed.

The survey mentioned last week was a confirmation of what had long been known: there is a grave crisis in Eucharistic faith among many Catholics. Can we believe that God can perform miracles every day, making it possible for bread and wine to become the Body and Blood of Jesus? Indeed we can and we must!

To be continued…
