Where other scholars, both Romanticist and otherwise, have analyzed the afterlives of Romanticism in a teleological straight path from life to afterlife, my dissertation turns this path into a round-trip. By connecting the trajectory of life and afterlife in a circuit, I argue that William Wordsworth’s appearances in a variety of genres and locales—from political tracts to memoirs, from New England to the Amazon—do not just produce a reception history. Rather, they uncover the ambivalent Englishness of Wordsworth’s own writing. The dissertation opens with a primal scene: the common childhood experience, especially in the colonies of the British empire, of memorizing and reciting Wordsworth’s “I wandered lonely as a cloud.” In Jamaica Kincaid’s Lucy (1990), this experience inspires the title ii character’s immediate hatred for daffodils. But in chapter one I argue that rather than repudiating Wordsworth’s poetry, Kincaid in My Garden (Book): (1999) shares Wordsworth’s struggle in his Guide to the Lakes (1835) to express the relationship between local stasis and colonial movement through the contested and artificial space of the garden. In chapter two I examine J. M. Coetzee’s Disgrace (1999) and contest the critical assumption that it uses Wordsworth’s Prelude (1805) merely to indicate the irrelevance of what Coetzee calls in White Writing “the quintessentially European posture of reader vis-à-vis environment.” In chapter three I examine the abolitionist afterlife of Wordsworth in the political writings of antebellum activist Lydia Maria Child, who musters Wordsworth’s Excursion (1814) in support of her comprehensive anti-slavery agenda— an agenda that Wordsworth seldom considered. In my concluding chapter I suggest that Wordsworth’s representativeness, his ability to stand for moral, geographical, and national spheres beyond those which he actually inhabited in his writing, has in part a strange and paradoxical source: it has been constructed since the 1790s by the Wordsworth family. Both then and now, the Wordsworth family labors reveal that the poet’s preeminence is a result of his representativeness, a quality that requires a familial infrastructure ready to subsume itself under the banner of Wordsworth. Alison Hickey taught me to love Wordsworth, but she ran a classroom where openly disliking Wordsworth was an equally valid response, and I’ve been interested in the diverse reactions that Wordsworth inspires ever since. At UCLA, Barbara Packer floated the idea that it might be fun to write about Lydia Maria Child’s literary epigraphs, and once I got started Saree Makdisi added that it might take a whole dissertation to do the topic justice. I am grateful to them both, for the excitement, pragmatism, and confidence they offered along the way. In particular, I doubt I would have focused on Wordsworth were it not for a series of well-timed emails from Saree, telling me to trust my passions and write on whatever I wanted. His support of this project has been constant, and I have felt it deeply. The arguments of this dissertation have developed out of many conversations with Jonathan Grossman and his dry-erase board. He took my zaniest ideas seriously, and inspired me to do the same. Talking with him became one of the most enjoyable parts of writing a dissertation. Liz DeLoughrey’s seminar on postcolonial ecocriticism altered my approach to literature, and her careful readings of my drafts have shown me the path toward becoming a better postcolonial scholar. Michael Meranze asked the question that got me through four years of writing: who do you want this new Wordsworth to be? And in a pinch Michael North offered generous advice on a project he had learned about just two days earlier. At all levels, the members of the English department at UCLA provided intellectual and emotional support far beyond my expectations. I remember with excitement conversations with Ian Newman, Sina Rahmani, and Mike Nicholson. Glenn Brewer gave me some of my most valuable Wordsworth references. Will Clark, Justine Pizzo, and Katherine Isokawa are dream colleagues, but they are even better friends. Their love built a community in Los Angeles that I am lucky to carry with me. When my father went back to school to get a B.A. in English, I was ten years old. For many formative years he modeled what it looked like for an adult to engage and grapple with new ideas and passions.     CHAPTER ONE BEFORE 1880, THROUGH EXCUSES ONLY She is in the swim, but not of it. —Journalist magazine In 1890, only 4 percent of American journalists were women, and percentages in other writing fields were even lower.Those few who made a serious com- mitment to writing found their course severely constrained—by their educa- tion, family responsibilities, social codes, and isolation from other writers. Because of these limited freedoms and connections, American women in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries wrote by relying on some form of justifi- cation or rationalization, which varied with the decades, and they usually wrote professionally for only part of their adulthood. Cast in the insubstantial role of Non-Writer, a subset of the care-giving Woman, these writers were meant to address only women readers on narrowly defined women’s topics such as home- making while the genres and pronouncements of male Writers were shaping American intellectual culture. Although their choices were few, for women working within a patriarchal system without supportive networks or groups, these excuses and restrictive definitions did provide some space for writing. DURING THE COLONIAL PERIOD In the colonial period, women’s labor was frequently needed, in towns and certainly on the frontier, and it provided their means of securing a living when 1 2 A GROUP OF THEIR OWN left without father or husband. Some better educated single women and wid- ows worked in journalism—writing, editing, printing, and distributing news- papers while also taking on contract printing jobs. The book earns this distinction through the detailed and voluminous depiction of violence among marauding groups of men in the Texas–Mexico borderlands around 1849. While McCarthy’s other books reveal a similarly dark fascination with the fate of wanderers and misfortunates1 and are equally virtuosic in their performance of language, what sets Blood Meridian apart is the visceral and unstinting narration of scenes of brutality, the theme of blood captured in the book’s title.

Her paternal grandfather, a weaver by trade, had been in the fighting around Concord and Lexington in 1775, and is said to have offed 5 of the enemy before being himself offed. Her “Grandfather’s House” about which she wrote her Thanksgiving poem was on South Street in Medford, Massachusetts and supposedly is this one near the Mystic River: 2. Granted, most of us had other things to think about in 2020. Nevertheless, the oversight was startling for me, a Massachusetts-born-and-bred historian of early America for whom the discovery, in a college history class, that 1620 wasn’t the beginning of American history was a memorable shock. Today, though, the Pilgrims and the Puritans who followed them to Massachusetts don’t seem as significant as they used to in popular historical memory. Over the past year, the latest front in the culture wars has been dominated by a contest between 1619 and 1776 as the origin points of American history—with the Pilgrims receding into a distant background.[1] For New Englanders in the nineteenth century, the Pilgrim and Puritan origins of the United States would be nearly impossible to forget, even (or especially) in a time of national crisis. Gradert focuses on a particular group of nineteenth-century New Englanders—those who were active in, or at least sympathetic to, the movement against slavery—to examine how their perceptions of Puritan roots shaped their antislavery consciousness.

While the Africanist presence, or lack thereof, helped white authors express the venture for a democratic freedom, the Nativist presence has helped—and continues to help—white authors articulate an American identity which is romantic and distinctly their own, separate from Europe. A number of texts published in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries portray Native Americans in a paradoxical way: the figure is simultaneously the quintessential villain, savage and untrustworthy, and a romantic object of play, resistant to civilization and therefore a figure to be possessed and emulated. At the core of this paradoxical representation is Mark Twain's The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876). The novel's villain, Injun Joe, is the epitome of evil, yet the Native American is still the object of Tom's imagination and infatuation. Even while Injun Joe is conveniently left to starve and die in an isolated setting, literally blocked from the rest of the civilization.

Coetzee’s Disgrace This article investigates how J.M. Coetzee’s “Disgrace” (1999) – portrayed as a postcolonial and postmodern fictional event – embodies, problematises and subverts the vision of the pastoral farm novel tradition by transcending traditional configurations of space and place. The novel offers a rather bleak apocalyptic vision of gender roles, racial relationships and family relations in post-apartheid South Africa and expresses the socio-political tensions pertaining to the South African landscape in terms of personal relationships. As a fictional reworking of the farm novel, “Disgrace” draws on the tradition’s anxieties about the rights of (white) ownership, but within a post-apartheid context. As such, “Disgrace” challenges the pastoral farm novel’s “dream topo- graphy” (Coetzee, 1988:6) of the family farm ruled by the patriarch – a topography inscribed – with the help of the invisible labour of black hands – as a legacy of power and ownership to be inherited and cultivated in perpetuity. Accordingly, the concept “farm” is portrayed as a contested and liminal space inscribed with a history of violence and dispossession – a dystopia. This article therefore conceptualises “Disgrace” as an antipastoral farm novel that reconfigures the concept “farm” – within the context of the South African reality – by subverting, inverting and parodying the structures of space and place postulated by the pastoral farm novel.
