Wilson DANCERS Nancy Hand, Patricia M. King, Robin Erin Reynolds, Diane Stoerger RODGERS & HART - A UNIQUE PARTNERSHIP Richard Rodgers was exposed to music at such and early age that by the time he was six, he had taught himself to play the piano with both hands. His parents and grandparents took him every Saturday to a matinee downtown or at the 125th St. Theater and thus began his dedication to the "musical world of glamour and beauty" he had never known existed. After writing scores for two high school productions, he was encouraged by Phillip Leavitt to contact Lorenz Hart, a Columbia graduate, who could quote Shakespeare by the page, was a passionate theater goer, loved good music and who had high hopes of becoming a writer. They met in 1918 and the creative union was immidiate. Hart admired Rodgers' easy gift for pleasi ng melody and Rodgers admi red the refinement and good taste of Hart's lyrics. Their collaboration lasted from 1918 to 1943 and produced 31 stage musicals and 10 motion picture scores. Of their first 17shows, 7were major successes, 10 were failures. Of their final 10 shows, 8 of the 10 were highly successful with 7 smash hits coming in succession. Lorenz Hart revolutionized lyric writing; he took what was once a functional commodity for a melody and charged it with wit, imagination and charm. Rodgers & Hart were leaders in thei r field, not followers. Every show had its own idea, plan, strategy and execution. Rodgers was reserved, methodical, responsible and professional. Hart, on the other hand, was erratic, irresponsible, careless and moody. They grew apart gradually during the late 30's when it became obvious that Hart was a deeply disturbed person. When Rodgers confronted his partner with the professional problems caused by his alcoholism and irresponsible behavior, Hart just said, "I've never really understood why you've put up with me all these years." Then Larry Hart walked out, Rodgers cried and it was over. Larry Hart died in 1943, just months after the opening of Oklahoma". FAHRENHEIT 451 by Ray Bradbury This one, with gratitude, is for DON CONGDON. FAHRENHEIT 451: The temperature at which book-paper catches fire and burns PART I: THE HEARTH AND THE SALAMANDER IT WAS A PLEASURE TO BURN. IT was a special pleasure to see things eaten, to see things blackened and changed. With the brass nozzle in his fists, with this great python spitting its venomous kerosene upon the world, the blood pounded in his head, and his hands were the hands of some amazing conductor playing all the symphonies of blazing and burning to bring down the tatters and charcoal ruins of history. With his symbolic helmet numbered 451 on his stolid head, and his eyes all orange flame with the thought of what came next, he flicked the igniter and the house jumped up in a gorging fire that burned the evening sky red and yellow and black. He strode in a swarm of fireflies. He wanted above all, like the old joke, to shove a marshmallow on a stick in the furnace, while the flapping pigeon- winged books died on the porch and lawn of the house. While the books went up in sparkling whirls and blew away on a wind turned dark with burning. Montag grinned the fierce grin of all men singed and driven back by flame. He knew that when he returned to the firehouse, he might wink at himself, a minstrel man, Does% burntcorked, in the mirror. Later, going to sleep, he would feel the fiery smile still gripped by his Montag% face muscles, in the dark.

Hart, Lorenz (1895-1943) Lorenz Hart (standing, by Raymond-Jean Frontain right) with Richard Rodgers in 1936. Encyclopedia Copyright © 2015, glbtq, Inc. Library of Congress Prints and Photographs Entry Copyright © 2002, glbtq, Inc. Division. Reprinted from http://www.glbtq.com Barely five feet tall, balding early, and possessing a disproportionately large head, Larry Hart was the first to disparage his own attractiveness. His jokes, however, masked a deeply-rooted inability to accept the possibility of romantic happiness or sexual gratification. Hart impulsively proposed marriage to several women friends, none of whom thought his offer serious. And when he allowed himself to act upon his desire for other men, he seems to have had difficulty performing sexually. (Biographer Frederick Nolan quotes one unidentified male partner's shock at discovering Hart cowering in the bedroom closet after sex, suggesting that the songwriter was unable actively to pursue homosexual pleasure without being overcome by guilt.) The result of such emotional imbroglio is that, despite having written lyrics as witty as any sung on the Broadway stage before or since, Hart is best remembered for his songs of unfulfilled desire and failed romance. Born Lorenz Milton Hart on May 2, 1895, to an immigrant Jewish family, Hart learned from his entrepreneur father that self-assertion allows survival. Never without a business venture, many of which were dishonest, Hart's father provided Larry with a lasting model for the cycles of impulsive free-spending and resulting impecuniosity that characterized Hart's own life. Hart entertained both friends and strangers lavishly, often living far beyond his means, but with a (sometimes unfounded) optimism that something would turn up.
