About Jekka's Herb Farm Jekka's Herb Farm was born from a passion. Jekka and Mac McVicar first started planting organic herbs in 1984, on a small patch at their home in Bristol. A passion that outgrew their garden resulted in the move to Alveston in 1987, at which time the farm was growing 26 varieties of herbs; this has now increased to over 650 varieties, each one expertly hand raised and benefiting from years of experience in growing high quality organic herbs.

Our reputation has gone from strength to strength. From 1993 to 2009 we have achieved 62 RHS Gold medals exhibiting herbs at flower shows around the country, including 14 Gold’s at RHS Chelsea Flower Show and two consecutive Tudor Rose Awards, in 2007 and 2008, for the best floral exhibit at the RHS Hampton Court flower show. Our 2009 Chelsea exhibit was also awarded the RHS Lawrence Medal, for the best floral exhibit shown to the RHS during that year. Jekka is President of the Friends of Bristol Botanic Garden, President of the West of Herb Group and a member of the RHS Herb Group. In 2016, Jekka was made an Honorary Member of the RHS Fruit, Vegetable & Herb Committee and an RHS Ambassador. She appears frequently on national radio to advise governments, chefs and members of the public on the cultivation and use of herbs. For the purpose of enhanced education on the subject of herbs, Jekka and her team have set up the country’s first Herbetum, where members of the public can see, smell & taste her national herb collections The largest collection of Culinary Herbs in the UK. We are located in the South Gloucestershire countryside, north of the M4/M5 interchange. The farm is open to the public on our 'Open days', check our calendar for the dates. 3) Trip to 2 local gardens at Brockweir. Barn House Garden and Greenfields. Both NGS

Barn House Garden

The garden at Barn House is located on a secluded hillside above the beautiful Wye Valley. Surrounded by meadows and woodland, it’s been an inspiring place to create a garden. The result is bold plantings of ornamental grasses and other resilient flowering perennials. The acre garden is divided into two, with the house sitting at the bottom of what was a rocky slope. Storm drainage was installed in 2006. In the process 100 tonnes of red sandstone were excavated. The biggest challenge has been how to prepare areas for planting. On the other hand, the site is south facing and catches the valley winds which makes it ideal for growing ornamental grasses.

Since we moved here, in 2006, we’ve propagated large numbers of plants from seed or by division. This has been both a rewarding experience and an affordable way to stock the garden’s mass plantings. The back gardenThis was the easiest place to start as it was already divided into smaller and more manageable areas. It also had the best soil, a rich if heavy clay that was prone to become waterlogged. Address : Barn House, Brockweir Common, Chepstow, NP16 7PH Phone: 01291 680041 Email: [email protected] ALSO to Greenfields, a neighbours garden who will open for us at the same time. limited car parking so please car share where possible. Meet at West Dean Centre for a 1.30 departure or meet at Brockwier. Please let me know if you intend to come on this trip. Usual NGS charge, tea and cake extra.

Welcome to Greenfields Greenfields is a 1.5 acre, plant person’s gem of a garden set in the village of Brockweir, on the Gloucestershire side of the beautiful Wye Valley. Greenfields has many mature trees and numerous unusual plants and shrubs, all carefully planted to create discrete gardens within a garden. Greenfields is the passion and work of ‘head gardener’ Jackie Healy who has combined a long interest in the propagation of plants alongside a strong interest in the form and colour and scents of plants to complete a sculptural living composition. The garden is designed with “all season interest” in mind with different areas being a joy to experience throughout the year.
