THE CONDUCTOR Issue 11 http://ncr.nps.gov/conductorissue11.htm JULY 2003, No. 11 The William Still Underground Railroad (UGRR) Foundation hosted the first annual National UGRR Conference and Family Reunion Festival, June 27 to 29, at the Loews Philadelphia Hotel. The event was also supported by the Harriet Tubman Historical Society. Descendants came from as far west as Seattle, WA, as far north as Canada, and as far south as Miami, FL. Many who attended brought narratives, artifacts, and cherished photos of people who participated in the UGRR. "The weekend was a huge success, and we are already planning for next year," stated Eve Elder-Mayes, Director of Marketing and Programming for the William Still UGRR Foundation. The three-day festivities were kicked off by unveiling a replica of a statue of the famous businessman, abolitionist, and writer, William Still, sculpted by Philip Sumptor. A campaign was launched to raise funds for the 6-foot statue and to seek it a permanent home in Philadelphia. Famfest also included workshops, re-enactments, a book fair, and UGRR exhibits from across the country. During performances at the Loews Hotel and the African-American History Museum, Chicago-based actress Kemba Johnson-Webb portrayed Harriet Tubman and Sojourner Truth, and Kim and Reggie Harris performed UGRR songs in a soulful manner. UGRR workshops were led by educators and historians from across North America. ZSun-nee Matema of the Washington Curtis-Lee Enslaved Remembrance Society, led a workshop on American Indian contributions to the UGRR. -

Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Byway Delaware Chapter 3.0 Intrinsic Resource Assessment The following Intrinsic Resource Assessment chapter outlines the intrinsic resources found along the corridor. The National Scenic Byway Program defines an intrinsic resource as the cultural, historical, archeological, recreational, natural or scenic qualities or values along a roadway that are necessary for designation as a Scenic Byway. Intrinsic resources are features considered significant, exceptional and distinctive by a community and are recognized and expressed by that community in its comprehensive plan to be of local, regional, statewide or national significance and worthy of preservation and management (60 FR 26759). Nationally significant resources are those that tend to draw travelers or visitors from regions throughout the United States. National Scenic Byway CMP Point #2 An assessment of the intrinsic qualities and their context (the areas surrounding the intrinsic resources). The Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Byway offers travelers a significant amount of Historical and Cultural resources; therefore, this CMP is focused mainly on these resource categories. The additional resource categories are not ignored in this CMP; they are however, not at the same level of significance or concentration along the corridor as the Historical and Cultural resources. The resources represented in the following chapter provide direct relationships to the corridor story and are therefore presented in this chapter. A map of the entire corridor with all of the intrinsic resources displayed can be found on Figure 6. Figures 7 through 10 provide detailed maps of the four (4) corridors segments, with the intrinsic resources highlighted. This Intrinsic Resource Assessment is organized in a manner that presents the Primary (or most significant resources) first, followed by the Secondary resources. -

Cultural Assets of NovA scotiA African Nova scotian tourism Guide 2 Come visit the birthplace of Canada’s Black community. Situated on the east coast of this beautiful country, Nova Scotia is home to approximately 20,000 residents of African descent. Our presence in this province traces back to the 1600s, and we were recorded as being present in the provincial capital during its founding in 1749. Come walk the lands that were settled by African Americans who came to the Maritimes—as enslaved labour for the New England Planters in the 1760s, Black Loyalists between 1782 and 1784, Jamaican Maroons who were exiled from their home lands in 1796, Black refugees of the War of 1812, and Caribbean immigrants to Cape Breton in the 1890s. The descendants of these groups are recognized as the indigenous African Nova Scotian population. We came to this land as enslaved and free persons: labourers, sailors, farmers, merchants, skilled craftspersons, weavers, coopers, basket-makers, and more. We brought with us the remnants of our cultural identities as we put down roots in our new home and over time, we forged the two together and created our own unique cultural identity. Today, some 300 years later, there are festivals and gatherings throughout the year that acknowledge and celebrate the vibrant, rich African Nova Scotian culture. MARY ANN SHADD CARY: A WRITER WHO SHAPED HISTORY Kikachukwu Otiono Colonel By Secondary School, Ottawa, ON In Canadian history, there is little mention of the influential writers of Afro- FIRST PLACE: Caribbean ancestry who have significantly contributed to shaping our country’s $5,000 diverse heritage and identity. Even sparser in discussion are Black Canadian women who have challenged how we perceive gender, fiction and race. Mary Ann Shadd Cary was one of these women, for she broke down insurmountable barriers for female writers of colour in North America. For young, black female writers, Shadd and other great writers are role models as pioneers in the craft, brave women who wielded their pens like swords; they cut through the throes of discrimination and oppression with defiance and boldness in their written works. Mary Ann Shadd Cary was born in Delaware in 1853 to abolitionist parents and was educated by Quakers in Pennsylvania. Although she was born an American, her contributions to Canadian society led to her recognition as a Person of National Historical Significance in Canada in 1994. Her journey to Canada began in 1850 when the Fugitive Slave Act was passed in the United States, requiring officials and citizens of all states to capture slaves and return them to their masters. Seeking refuge and freedom from what many abolitionists nicknamed the “Bloodhound Law,” Shadd and her family fled to Canada. But Mary Ann Shadd Cary did not let blatant racism quench her thirst for change and equality. Her dedication to the Black community in Canada led her to establish The Provincial Freeman in 1853.
