    genealogy Article Vox España and Alternative für Deutschland: Propagating the Crisis of National Identity Robert Gould Institute of European, Eurasian and Russian Studies, Carleton University, Ottawa, ON K1S 5B6, Canada; [email protected] Received: 19 August 2019; Accepted: 25 November 2019; Published: 29 November 2019 Abstract: This paper contains a comparative analysis of the presentation of the national identity of Spain and Germany by the far-right populist parties Vox España and Alternative für Deutschland. It shows how each party views national identity as being in a serious crisis arising from the betrayal by old-line parties which has led to the increased influence of the EU, the consequent reduction of national sovereignty, a deleterious impact on their own and on European culture, and a harmful influence on the family. The parties repudiate many of the provisions of the EU treaties. They are equally opposed to the presence of Islam in Christian Europe, viewing it as a menace to values shared by all European nations. These analyses lead to an examination of the performance of crisis by means of deliberate provocation and the use of electronic media. It shows how these parties from very different parts of Europe share remarkably close positions and use the technological achievements of the twenty-first century to attack the late-twentieth-century political and social achievements of the European Union in order to replace them with the nineteenth-century idea of the distinct ethno-cultural nation fully sovereign in its own nation-state. Uncertainty as to the fate of Europe may demotivate voters and help disinformation campaigns often run by foreign powers hostile to the European project or sponsored by clandestine third parties. Whilst many of these fears are often seen as exaggerated, it is difficult to dismiss the impact of Brexit; for the first time since its inception, a major state in a process of leaving the EU. Synopsis: Populism studies have rapidly burgeoned but nevertheless systematic cross-national evidence about this phenomenon has lagged far behind. How can populism be measured in ways which are consistent, valid, and reliable? To address this issue, Part I outlines the minimalist concept of populism used in the study.     LSE European Politics and Policy (EUROPP) Blog: Madrid’s regional election: How we got here, what happened, and why it matters Page 1 of 4 Madrid’s regional election: How we got here, what happened, and why it matters On 4 May, the Popular Party, led by Isabel Díaz Ayuso, doubled their share of seats in a snap regional election in Madrid. Stuart J. Turnbull-Dugarte and José Rama react to the result, which also prompted the resignation of Pablo Iglesias, the leader of Podemos. Despite Madrid’s persistently high infection and death rates, just over 3.5 million Madrileños opted to head to the polls on 4 May in one of the most polarising electoral contests in Spain’s richest and most influential region for years. The success of the right cannot be underestimated. The Popular Party (PP), led by lock-down sceptic Isabel Díaz Ayuso, doubled their representation in the region and, in tandem with Spain’s new populist radical right-wing party, VOX, Madrid’s right-wing bloc now enjoys a comfortable legislative majority. The catalyst for Madrid’s snap election was legislative manoeuvring that took place in one of Spain’s other regional governments, the region of Murcia, which had been governed by a coalition of the centre-right PP and the self- styled liberal party, Ciudadanos. This came to an abrupt and unexpected end when Ciudadanos presented a no- confidence motion against their leading coalition partner with the help of the Spanish Socialist Party (PSOE).

    MARKETS May 17, 2021 Madrid’s Election—Thoughts and Investment Considerations By Dean French This month’s regional election in Madrid attracted a reasonable amount of attention, which provides an opportunity for us to share our thoughts, to explain both why we think the national impact is limited and the reasons why our investment view remains intact. Background At the 2019 regional election in Madrid, the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE) won the largest share of the vote, but a left-of-centre grouping with Más Madrid (More Madrid) and Podemos fell short of a majority. This led to Isabel Díaz Ayuso of the People’s Party (PP) forming a right-of-centre coalition with the Ciudadanos (Citizens) party, with support from Vox. A similar PP-Citizens coalition existed in the region of Murcia, but there in March of this year, the Citizens party, conspiring with the PSOE party, called for a vote of no confidence against PP in an (ultimately unsuccessful) attempt to remove them from power. Against the threat of a similar maneuver, and with polls showing a shift in her favour, Ayuso called for a snap election in Madrid, which was held on May 4. The Results Ayuso’s party more than doubled its tally to 65 seats. While this remains four short of an absolute majority, the Vox party pledged to facilitate Ayuso’s return to power. In contrast, support for both PSOE and Citizens collapsed, with the latter even removed from the regional assembly. Podemos party founder and leader Pablo Iglesias, who had stepped down as Deputy Prime Minister in order to run against Ayuso, modestly increased Podemos’ share of the votes, but the result saw him announce his withdrawal from politics after a polarizing campaign.

Vox became the first party to the right of the conservative PP to win seats in a regional election in 2018 and in general elections in April and November of 2019. Vox is currently the third largest political party in the Spanish parliament, bringing an end to Spanish exceptionalism. This thesis addresses the rise of Vox through a conceptual framework of political opportunity structure. The framework allows for multiple explanations to account for Vox’s sudden breakthrough.

    A Defining Statement of Modern Conservativism By Mr. Rich Lowry The greatest documents in American history never lose their ability to astonish. They deserve, and repay, careful study, and inevitably have contemporary resonances no matter how long ago they were written or uttered. There’s no doubt that Ronald Reagan’s “A Time for Choosing” belongs in the top ranks of American speeches. It is among the most significant political speeches ever given by a non- officeholder and non-presidential candidate. It heralded the beginning of the political career of a man who would go on to be a successful two-term president, and is an extraordinarily powerful and cogent expression of a deeply held worldview. The speech is a definitional statement of modern conservatism. Reagan’s core arguments in the speech about the deleterious effects of taxes, deficit spending, and debt defined the Republican agenda for two generations. He gave us phrases still quoted fondly by conservatives, including “the trouble with our liberal friends is not that they are ignorant, but that they know so much that isn't so,” and “a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this Earth.” It is amazing how well much of it stands up, despite some anachronisms (for instance, the time devoted to agricultural policy), and it still speaks to top conservative concerns. On the other hand, the weaknesses of the speech in retrospect point to areas where conservatives should re- examine their assumptions or freshen up their agenda and appeal. First, let’s consider what holds up, indeed what could be—and is—routinely said by conservative politicians and opinion-makers now.
