The Civilians at Gettysburg, 1863

Bloom EMERITUS, GETTYSBURG COLLEGE "WE NEVER EXPECTED A BATTLE": THE CIVILIANS AT GETTYSBURG, 1863 M/uch printer's ink has been expended in describing and analyzing M the military aspects of the Battle of Gettysburg. The earliest examples of this genre were newspaper accounts filed from the battle- field during and shortly after the fighting. Soon, there followed more lengthy and detailed treatment beginning with Michael Jacobs' account written a few months after the battle. The most recent book-length contribution to the story is Harry W. Pfanz's exhaustive study of the second day's fighting.' Michael Jacobs, it is true, devoted considerable space to the impact of the battle upon the civilian population caught in its path. But, the greater proportion of his story, like those which followed, focused attention on tactical decisions reached by generals and the movements and valor of the troops. A picture of the plight of the inhabitants of Gettysburg and Adams County and their reactions to their peril has been more often left to novelists and other fiction writers.2 In his recent book, Witness to Gettysburg, Richard Wheeler aims to tell his story "in terms both historical and human, as largely as possible in the words of the participants, both military and civilian, both male and female." 3 His emphasis, however, is on eyewitness accounts of military action as seen by soldiers who were participants. Those residing at the time in Gettysburg and the vicinity, unlike those in other northern (and most southern) towns, saw the face of armed conflict at first hand. -

Not only does it signify that I have completed my project but also that I have not traveled the weary path toward completion alone. The irsF t Battle of Gettysburg: April 22, 1861 Abstract The fears of invasion voiced by the residents of south-central Pennsylvania prior to the Gettysburg Campaign are often the subject of ridicule in books and articles written on the battle. But to appreciate the events that occurred during the summer of 1863, it is necessary to understand how the citizens were affected by the constant rumors of invasion during the first two years of the war. And although there were many such scares prior to the battle, nothing reached the level of anxiety that was felt during the first few days of the war. On Monday morning, April 15, 1861, following the surrender of Fort Sumter, Abraham Lincoln issued a proclamation calling for 75,000 volunteers from the loyal states to suppress the Rebellion so as to "maintain the honor, the integrity, and existence of our national Union." Persephone in the River Phlegethon; or, the Women at Gettysburg By Brenda Ayres Presented at the Liberty University 12 th Annual Civil War Seminar Gettysburg March 289, 2008 The heroine in my paper is Persephone. In Greek mythology, the story of Persephone (per séffenee) is a fable that attempts to explain why the earth experiences winter. The myth goes like this. Zeus (the king of the gods who ruled from Mount Olympus) fell in love with Demeter (dih- MEE-tur) or Mother-Earth, or the goddess of grain and fertility, also the goddess that preserves marriage and sacred law. From their union came Persephone. As her daughter grew up, Demeter protected her from the lust and influence of other gods, and thus she developed into a beautiful, unspoiled, and fresh young lady, the very embodiment of spring. -

A Tour of Gettysburg's Visual Battle aD mage Abstract A little-known aspect of the Battle of Gettysburg is the story behind the Civil War battle ad mage still present m some of the town's buildings. During the first three days of July 1863, cannons fired over and into Gettysburg, and as a result some of the homes were inadvertently struck by the shells. As a battlefield guide, the author has driven by these structures everyday for the past few years, and a highlight of any tour is a stop in front of the Sheads house on Buford Avenue, where one can point up to an artillery shell embedded just to the left of its tta ic window. The loud eO hs and Aahs that emanate from visitors are more than ample evidence of the fascination experienced when coming face to face with battle ad mage caused more than 130 years earlier. -

Fall Campaign 38 October 2015 About Our October Speaker….Kurt Schweighauser We welcome Kurt Schweighauser: Kurt is a retired science teacher who resides in Lansdale, Pa. Kurt taught in Ambler for the Wissahickon School District & Philadelphia for the Philadelphia School District. He also taught in Pennsauken in New Jersey and finished his career teaching science students in Las Vegas, Nevada. He went west to see if the students were any different and discovered they were not. He enjoyed every day he spent in the classroom. Kurt loves to tell stories. Kurt started researching the U.S.S. Wissahickon in 1998 and has almost finished. Kurt has a daughter 28, who has both her B.S. and M.S. from Penn State. Kurt’s daughter resides in Cleveland. Philadelphia Gunboats The John Lynn Shipyard, located in the Southwark section of Philadelphia, in 1859 built the screw steamer "Habana" for a steam ship company that ran between New Orleans and Havana, Cuba. The Habana was converted at the start of the Civil War by the Confederates into the commerce raider CSS Sumter. In 1861 the Lynn shipyard completed the U.S.S. Wissahickon. This shipyard has the distinction of supplying vessels to both sides of the conflict. 1 Brigade Call Civil War Round Table of Eastern, PA, Inc. Warren Beach The attendance at the September meeting was disappointing. The program was great. Terry Latschar did a first person story of Tillie Pierce, a young girl present at the battle of Gettysburg, Many of her comments were directly from the book that Tillie Pierce wrote later in life. -

NATIONAL PARK SERVICE GETTYSBURG NATIONAL MILITARY PARK EISENHOWER NATIONAL HISTORJC SITE GETTYSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA 17325 GETTYSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA 17325 Dear Teacher, Gettysburg National Military Park is pleased to provide you and your students with our student program materials on "Impact of War: The Slyder Family Farm." Hopefully it will enrich your studies of the Civil War, providing your students with insights on the effect of this war (and all wars) on civilian populations. Targeted at students in grades 5 through 8, this program includes pre-visit preparation in the classroom, an on-site, two-hour program conducted by a park ranger, and post-visit follow-up. These lessons were designed to coordinate with the Pennsylvania Department of Education Academic Standards for History, with special attention to the four major descriptors used in each chronological category: Human Impact; Historical Evidence; Continuity and Change; and Conflict and Compromise. They address the following standards, to be achieved by Grade 9: 8.1 Historical Analysis and Skills Development • Analyze chronological thinking (time lines, continuity and change, context for events); • Analyze and interpret historical comprehension (visual data presented in historical evidence); • Analyze and interpret historical research (primary and secondary sources, conclusions). 8.2 Pennsylvania History • Interpret and analyze the interaction of cultural, economic, geographical, political and social relations in Pennsylvania history from 1860 to 1875. - Identify and analyze the importance of historical evidence (including historic places, such as Gettysburg); - Analyze continuity and change in Pennsylvania (including settlement patterns, impact of wars); - Analyze conflict and cooperation impacting Pennsylvania (including military conflict).
