This shows how close the power density of the players is. “The Kaiser” Ralf Souquet was always trailing with one or two racks to “Napoleon” Marcus Chamat. But somehow the Swedish could not enlarge the advantage. To the opposite, Souquet was always able to come back which lead to the score of 8:8. It was Chamat to break the balls. He was completely unlucky since all balls were spread wide open, the 1-ball was on but no ball was pocketed. He left an open table to Souquet who used this chance to gain the first lead in the entire match: 9:8. In the end, Makkonen turned out to be the luckier of the two, winning…9:8! The match between Manuel Gama and Alexander Kazakis went similar. The experienced Gama always trailed by one or two racks to the young gun from Greece. In the end, Kazakis had the better outcome winning over Gama with… 9:8! Thomas Mehtala already had a comfortable 6:3 lead over Scotsman Jayson Shaw when Shaw decided to fight back and keep a foot in the door. He ran rack after rack and the match went to a hill-hill situation. Then, Shaw scratched while he attempted to play a safety shot. But Mehtala was not able to benefit from that, making another error. That gave Shaw the opportunity to snatch the rack and the match and win with… 9:8! Bob Jewett Combinations and Throw Some surprising insights into the world of "throw." In my column last April, I covered some of the details of throw. Here are two related and surprising experiments for you to try. As a reminder, a ball is said to be "thrown" when its path is not directly away from the spot where another ball contacts it. This deviation can be due to spin on the cue ball, or simply from the motion of the striking ball across the struck ball on a cut shot. Most beginners will shoot the shot in Diagram 1 wrong. The two object balls are frozen together and pointed about six inches away from the pocket. A novice will attempt to "cut" the second ball by playing to side A of the balls, perhaps expecting the first ball to move to the right before pushing the second ball towards the pocket. Of course, we all know that you have to hit the shot on side B, and let the friction between the balls drag the second ball towards the pocket. But how does the shot change if the balls aren't touching? With some separation, as in Diagram 2, there will be two effects, the throw from the sur- face friction, and the cut because the first ball does move to the side before it hits the second ball. Which effect will dominate? If the balls are separated by a hair's breadth, the shot hasn't changed much and you would expect nearly the same result as for frozen balls.

Living Legends Challenge ike Sigel and Earl Strickland, without a doubt, are “living legends”. Although both players are Hall -of-Famers, Earl has been competing and practicing regularly while Mike has only practiced for this contest. As we all know, both Earl Mand Mike like to talk to anyone who will listen and that’s what they did. Both players were mic’d and were free to express themselves without limitations. The variety of six disciplines: 8-Ball, 9-Ball, 10-Ball, Straight Pool, Banks, and One- Pocket made each player a favorite in several disciplines. Earl competes and practices regularly while Mike tried to get ready for this challenge match and it showed as Earl dominated the 8-Ball match. The 10-Ball match started out similarly, but a Strickland skid on game ball changed things including a swelling conﬁdence from Sigel. It ended up a squeaker as Mike tied it up at 7-7 yet Earl closed it out at 8-7. Again, the player’s mic’d made it a blast. Straight Pool was the game that all thought Mike had his best chance at turning the tables on Earl.
