Minor Thesis– ENT-80424 Report no. 010.27 MSc Plant Science Program Laboratory of Entomology Wageningen University December, 2010 Abstract Plants possess a broad spectrum of defense mechanisms against herbivore attack. The black mustard Brassica nigra, is able to display early defense mechanism against egg infestation by pierid butterflies. This plant shows induced direct defense through hypersensitive response (HR), which kills the eggs as well as indirect defense by the emission of egg-induced plant volatiles that attract egg parasitoids such as Trichogramma wasp. In this study, I investigate whether B. nigra plants infested by the small cabbage white butterfly (Pieris rapae) or the cabbage moth (Mamestra brassicae) express both kind of defense strategies, and whether plants expressing HR still attract Trichgramma wasps in the laboratory and in nature. Tests in the y-tube olfactometer showed that volatiles of plants infested with P. rapae eggs 24h after egg deposition were attractive to the egg parasitoid Trichogramma brassicae when tested against volatiles of uninfested plants. All tested P. rapae-infested plants expressed HR 24h after oviposition. In contrast, plants infested with M. brassicae eggs did not express HR. Volatiles of M. brassicae egg-infested plants were attractive to T. brassicae only when tested against clean air but not when tested against volatiles of uninfested plants. In nature, 77% of the P. rapae eggs collected from HR+ B. nigra plants died, whereby 37% because of Trichogramma parasitism. Eggs collected on HR- B. -

Many insect are related to this crop, compromising the quantity and quality of the fruit, representing a production problem. Vegetable diversification is one of the main elements that can be managed for suppressing undesirable insect populations in organic production, once that supports the presence of natural enemies. The basil Ocimum basilicum L. and the marigold Tagetes erecta L. are attractive and nutritious plants for parasitoids, being important candidates for diversified crops. This study evaluated the parasitoids attracted by the association of basil and marigold to organic sweet pepper crop. The experiment comprised three treatments: a) sweet pepper monoculture; b) sweet pepper and basil intercropping; c) sweet pepper and marigold intercropping. -

Srivastava, Rajeev Gupta, Ramasamy Perumal and Tesfaye T. Tesso Abstract Pearl millet [Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R. Br.; Syn. Cenchrus ameri- canus (L.) Morrone] is the sixth most important cereal in the world. Today, pearl millet is grown on more than 30 million ha mainly in West and Central Africa and the Indian sub-continent as a staple food for more than 90 million people in agri- culturally marginal areas. It is rich in proteins and minerals and has numerous health benefits such as being gluten-free and having slow-digesting starch. It is grown as a forage crop in temperate areas. It is drought and heat tolerant, and a climate-smart crop that can withstand unpredictable variability in climate. However, research on pearl millet improvement is lagging behind other major cereals mainly due to limited investment in terms of man and money power. So far breeding achievements include the development of cytoplasmic male sterility (CMS), maintenance counterparts (rf) system and nuclear fertility restoration genes (Rf) for hybrid breeding, dwarfing genes for reduced height, improved input responsive- ness, photoperiod neutrality for short growing season, and resistance to important diseases. Further improvement of pearl millet for genetic yield potential, stress tolerance, and nutritional quality traits would enhance food and nutrition security for people living in agriculturally dissolute environments. Application of molecular technology in the pearl millet breeding program has a promise in enhancing the selection efficiency while shortening the lengthy phenotypic selection process D. -

(email: [email protected]) Abstract In the present study effect of egg retention on walking behavior of females of Trichogramma chilonis (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae) was investigated under laboratory conditions by using a computer based, Abid’s trackmove software. Results revealed that 3 days old wasps showed significant increase in their walking activity for searching host eggs as compared to 1 day and 2 days old wasps respectively.
