TOURING NEWS 3 How I spent my Summer vacation

By: Mary Kennette

We departed the Husky July 23 at approximately 8:30 a.m. in two groups led by Bryce & Perry. We were in the latter, and Dwight rode sweep. The weather was perfect; clear skies, hot breeze, and a denim jacket was enough for the entire trip. Lots of trailers in our bike convoy with Mike & Linda, Michelle, Spencer & James, and Fred & Shirley as our 4-wheeled cabooses. Bryce’s group left 15 minutes before us, but being the efficient bikers that we were, we managed to catch up to them almost every stop. A couple hours into our ride, and just past the French River Trading Post, most of us saw a female moose staring at us from the side of the Highway. I’ve never seen one that close, and didn’t know they were called cows. We went by it too fast to get a picture. Lunch was at Jeremy’s Truck Stop near Nairn Centre, ON. Which reminds me, I used to date a guy from Nairn Centre…….. but that’s another article. Good food, although our waitress was a bit grumpy and didn’t succumb to Dwight’s charms. We ended our day early and were checked in at the Mohawk Motel in Massey, ON by 5 pm. Enough time to sit out in the afternoon sun and enjoy a couple beverages before dinner. I have a picture of Bryce that looks like he’s having a serious conversation with his hand. Hmmm……maybe he had more than a couple beverages. Dinner was at The Dragonfly Restaurant. Loretta had made reservations for the group, and we had the entire interior as ours. Unfortunately, one of the cooks had quit the previous day, so it took quite a while to get our dinners, but it certainly was worth it. The food was delicious and plentiful…..two of my prerequisites. Then Dianne, Dana & I sniffed around town and found an ice cream spot for dessert. Got up early the next day and kept on going. This was my first time crossing into the USA at the Sault, and I found Northern Michigan to be beautiful. When we met up with Bryce’s group for lunch, the restaurant couldn’t seat us, so we continued onto St. Ignace. Perry pulled into a lot that had lots of level, paved parking for bikes, and the bonus was the Driftwood Restaurant & Sports Pub. Delicious food once again; we thanked Perry for his excellent taste in dining establishments, but alas, no Vernor’s for Dwight……..yet. The Mackinac Bridge was longer than expected, and not as high, but you could feel the power of the air currents and imagine what a strong wind would do. I remember hearing way back that a Yugo was blown off the bridge in the ‘80’s and I could see that happening. We rode on the paved side of the bridge, but when you looked over and down, you could see the Straits below. I thought I’d get queasy, but I didn’t. Our ride continued under clouds now, but so far no rain, until we got into Petoskey. What a beautiful town…..historical homes with lots of gingerbread & trim, and big front porches with lots of wicker chairs overlooking the harbour. I wanted to be like Baby Bear and try them all out until I found one that was just right. The colours of the homes were vibrant and one could see the exteriors were well maintained. The rain really started to come down but it felt good soaking through my jacket. Twenty minutes later, we were out of it and pulling into the Boyne Mountain Resort. I haven’t travelled very much, and we haven’t taken a vacation in over ten years, but we certainly picked the right place to go and the right group to go with. The accommodations were clean and modern. We shared a townhouse with Mark & Michelle and their two boys. The boys claimed the loft as theirs and hung blankets over the railing. Everything was within walking distance around the resort; either by the path or cutting across the field. Thank goodness Bryce informed us the resort personnel had sprayed the field for snakes, so that was one less worry for me. During the week, we wore a path across that field. Some of our steps were more crooked than others, but we always found our way back. Or was it to? I can’t remember, and I was sober. After checking in and unpacking, Dana & I walked back over for opening night dinner. We were a few minutes late, so there wasn’t room at the group tables….no problem. We found spots and sat with Arlene & Don from Brighton, MI and Bob & Pam Beveridge of Iowa, the outgoing Family of the Year. Within a few minutes, we were laughing away, and I don’t know how many times we ran into them during the week. The 50/50 draws were held and it was “Oh Canada” from that point on for the entire week. Susan Ooms, a new member from our Chapter won the first draw; a gentleman from the Barrie chapter won the 2nd, and Rick Rysnik of Chapter K won the third. In short course, Canada made it known we were serious contenders for any and all events & prizes. Sunday night, Dana & I went into Petoskey to do a few groceries at Meijer’s. I found the prices to be comparable to those at home. Others were saying they went

4 OCTOBER 2011 to Walmart and found the prices to be a lot less than in Canada. We did however, find Vernor’s. I had given up pop recently and was over my Diet Coke cravings. TAKE PRIDE However, I was not going to pass up on Vernor’s. I grew up on this; when you IN YOUR RIDE . . . were sick to your stomach, that’s what you drank to settle it. The taste is like no other, and it was just as good as I remembered. Quality Parts and Accessories Monday was the first official day of Gold Rush. We went to the opening ceremony for your 1975 to 2012 Wing in the Matterhorn room. Canadian members took up almost the entire left side of the hall, and being Canadian, were very quiet and reserved………..NOT! We came to party and made it known to all. We survived an attack by the world famous Pirates of Illinois and were made to pay a ransom to Helping Hands or walk the plank. Not wanting to be fish food, we quickly complied, and were rewarded with a yellow badge to wear the rest of the week. I thought their idea was clever and imaginative; what a great way to have fun and do some good at the same time. Then the fun really started. This was the first time I played Dirty Bingo and it GL1800 LED Driving Lights - fits 2012 was so much fun. We laughed at everyone trying to get the nicest packages and watched them travel across the room multiple times. Dana ended up with the tackiest clock you have ever seen, and I got a box of Jiffy Muffin Mix. Overall for the week, I ended up with four of those mixes. My sister-in-law from Windsor claimed them when she came up to visit in August; says she loves them and buys them whenever she goes to the States. Hopefully, she’ll make muffins for me when I go to Windsor in September. That evening, we took the ski lift up the Mountain to the Summit Restaurant for GL1800 LED Driving Lights dinner. I found the lift to be very relaxing and could have ridden for hours. The view seemed like it went on forever, and we took the opportunity to get some pictures of the resort and each other. Standing there, Dana put his arms around me, kissed me and said the words I’ll never forget: “I miss our dogs”. He is so romantic. Unfortunately, the restaurant was too full; the wait too long, so we all went back down the mountain and got dinner at one of the many outdoor restaurants. Dana called home that night and our son told him the dogs were fine. A lot of our time was spent walking about checking out the vendors and enjoying GL1800 Windshield Vent Trim and Vents the resort. Dana really liked the mobile paint shop and the various designs the female artist created. We spent a lot of the evenings in the hot tub and pool; back and forth between the two. It was very relaxing for two people who don’t know how to relax. We enjoyed the drill team performance; watching the bikes create their patterns and hearing the one bike’s pegs scrape on the turns & leans. I was disappointed with the way the Human Logo was handled. For me, being my first and probably only Gold Rush that I will be able to attend, I wanted to see our group on the magazine cover and point out who was who. With the picture taken at night, we won’t be able to identify anyone, other than knowing I was in the “G”. I can say that was the only thing I would change about the entire week, so all in all, one complaint isn’t bad. That being said, if the picture hadn’t been taken when it was, we would not have had the opportunity to witness Kathy and Beth create their now world-famous “grass angels”. I guess it’s true……a silver lining to everything. 2012 GL1800 Accessories We went to the Pyjama Party to see Mark, but he didn’t get there til later, so we missed seeing him. I did see the pictures of him. It’s unfair he looks better in a negligee than most of the female members of Chapter K. But it is nice that the big guy from Nebraska took a shine to him. The Light Parade to Boyne, MI was another highlight. So many bikes and lights in progression; lots of honking and did you see how many people came out to watch the parade? I was very impressed the merchants of Boyne stayed open til midnight on a Tuesday to accommodate us. The four bands playing on the streets were enjoyable and watching Dottie jam on her harmonica with one group was neat. Dana enjoyed black raspberry ice cream from one of the little shoppes; he said it was like nothing he ever had before and ordered it again when he was For a free catalog, free gift and the name of your nearest dealer finished. He had ice cream three times that day. Call 1-800-821-9861 For the Tunnel of Trees to Mackinaw City ride, I rode with Dwight as his Web www.addonaccessories.net navigator. It was a beautiful ride; once again through Petoskey then onward to Email [email protected] TOURING NEWS 5 Harbor Springs and Cross Village with lunch in Mackinaw City. I enjoyed walking about town and going off onto side streets away from the tourist areas to view the architecture. I wish we would have had time to go to Fort Michilimackinac and the lighthouse, so that will have to be on another vacation. Oh, and a Goldwing passenger seat beats a VTX passenger seat hands down any day. I was in total comfort. On Thursday, Perry, Deborah, Paul, Loretta, Ted, Marvin, Dana & I went zip-lining. What a blast. I had never zipped before. It was on my bucket list, so now was as good a time as ever. I would do it again in a heartbeat. I tried like heck to get myself turned upside down but couldn’t. Dana, who is second cousin to a monkey, flipped and flopped any which way he wanted to. Our guides were excellent and super friendly, and on the second last zip, they turned me upside down and pushed me off. That alone was worth the experience. But what really got me was Marvin. He had difficulty too in getting upside down, so the guides did the same thing to him. What a feel good to hear Marvin, upside down and on his way across, exclaim “I did it….I did it!” with such obvious delight. We were all a bunch of kids. I think the highlight for a bunch of us was our skit…….”If I Were Not Upon My Bike”. Under the musical accompaniment of Marvin, bicycle horn by Becky and direction by Judy, a number of us performed, with the aid of numerous Butter Shots prior, a not-so-Disney version of their cruise line skit. To say it went over well would be an understatement, and to be asked to perform again for closing ceremonies was a compliment. One of our members said she heard a woman telling her husband to cover his eyes because she had heard it was “sinful”. We all had a good laugh at that one, and had a ball doing it. Afterward, we all went to the Trophy Room outdoor patio for pizza, and broke out into “Oh Canada” and the US National Anthem. Some passersby probably thought we had had too much to drink. But the truth is we hadn’t, we were just having a lot of fun. Dana also enjoyed Toasted Coconut Ice cream from the little shop at the resort. On our last evening, after closing ceremonies, a group went into Petoskey via shuttle bus to the casino. Dana & I didn’t feel like going. We had yet to enjoy a fresh perch dinner, so along with Dianne, we found a little roadhouse type restaurant up on the highway and enjoyed fish & chips. After a busy week, it was a good way to wind down. Later on, it was back to the hot tub and pool. As with all good things, it must come to an end. Friday morning found us all packed up and everything loaded onto the bikes. I only bought T-shirts for us and we had to reconfigure the trailer and bags. Good thing I didn’t go to the quilt store and buy metres of fabric! Once again, setting off into excellent weather, we started for home. In Mackinaw City, we stopped for fuel and that is where Dana forgot he had pulled his kickstand up and dropped the bike & trailer. He rolled clear and wasn’t hurt thanks to his leather gear. The batwing on his bike had scrapes and chip on the left side, but no other damage. Mark donated band aids from his first aid kit and patched the bike that evening at the motel. (Note to self: do not let Mark do body work on bike if he offers). That night, at the Pinewood Motor Inn in Espanola, we once again enjoyed each other’s company for our final dinner as the traveling group. After dinner, we were treated to the vocal talents of Tim Lilly, Dwight’s brother-in-law and now friend to many of us. We all joined in for John Denver’s “Country Roads”. What a powerful voice Tim has. I asked Dana right then if he ever thought he’d be sitting in Espanola, ON on a Friday night singing country songs in a restaurant with a group of friends and he said never, but he wouldn’t choose to be anywhere else. Gold Rush 2011 turned out to be the best thing to happen for Dana & me in years. The opportunity to travel with a great bunch of people…… get to know the ones we didn’t know; get to know some others better and relax & enjoy good times with good friends. As most of you know, we both tend to be workaholics, and to finally take the time to commit to Gold Rush was a big decision on our part. It was a good decision. Respectfully submitted, in friendship Mary Kennette

6 OCTOBER 2011 2011-2012 GWTA Family of the Year JR and Karen Green

Hello once again to all our wonderful GWTA family….what a beautiful time of the year…..fall. This morning as daybreak came I had the most beautiful view of our colorful maple tree located directly in front of our house. Such a gorgeous site…the colors are so bright, a true indication that fall is upon us now. We had a rather hard freeze about a week ago & now everything is ablaze with such beautiful fall colors. This is one of my favorite times of the year for a ride on “Beaute”, our Gold Wing as the trees & everything are so colorful, and it makes for a very spectacular ride. Our chapter took a ride up thru the Loess Hills the first week in October & stopped for lunch in Pisgah, Iowa at the “Old Home Café”. Then we rode on over to Small’s Apple Orchard by Mondamin, Ia. for some apple pie ala mode. This is a traditional fall ride for us as it’s such a beautiful time of the year here in Iowa. Many of the surrounding chapters in Ia. & Ne. have also been out doing some apple pie runs this fall. We need to do all the riding we can while we can since “Jack Frost” has already paid us a visit…..Ol’ Man Winter will be sneaking upon us soon. But alas fall will pass as will winter & we will once again be into our fantastic riding season once again…..something for all of us to look forward to. Time has already been passing us by very quickly….seems like we just home from Gold Rush & yet in a few days we will be into November. Being chosen for the GWTA FOY for both Jr & myself was one of the most beautiful titles ever bestowed upon us. No wait…..I should back up to when we were chosen by our Chapter L members as that is where our journey began. We promised all our chapter members that we would do our very best to uphold & try to bring home some more titles as that was quite an honor for us. But it didn’t end there because before long we were chosen as the Iowa state FOY & then just when we thought life couldn’t get any better we went to Region C Rally & were chosen as the Region C FOY. That night at the camper I thought the tears would never stop…what a beautiful, wonderful, fabulous honor that had been bestowed upon us by all the dear & wonderful friends in Region C. So many of our chapter members (we have been accepted as honorary members of the beloved Ne. Chapter Z) were there at Storm Lake & the applause, hugs & congratulations were beyond any words I could ever choose to express them. We felt so very, very blessed! The end of the trail was not to stop there though as we traveled with our dear friends Darrell & Judy Peters to Boyne Mt., Michigan for the GWTA Gold Rush where we were then chosen as the national FOY…..we are so honored & our family of bikers just keeps growing in leaps & bounds. Our Region C plaque adorns the TV. stand so that we look at it daily & remember all the beautiful friends & family who have honored us with it. Thank you to each & every one of you for giving us such a wonderful ride down the road to being GWTA FOY for 2011-2012. Our farmers here in Iowa are busy harvesting the crops out of the fields…so if you’re out for a fall ride please do be very careful of all the farm machinery on the roads…..they are “SLOW MOVING VEHICLES”. Another problem we always have here about this time of the year are the deer….now that the fields are being harvested & the hunters are also out in the fields ….the deer are really on the move this time of the year. Another problem that has really grown here is the increasing number of those pesky wild turkeys….we have so very many of them that one must be very careful also when out riding as some of the toms are very large birds. We had a friend who had one fly out from the side of the road & smash into his windshield…..he finally ended up in the ditch with only a few minor problems to the wing & bruises to him. He said he didn’t even see it until it was airborne & crashed into him. So beware of not only deer & turkeys but also of any critters that might be crossing the road while you are out riding. I would like to offer another piece of advice to anyone & everyone who goes off riding by themselves…….please do let someone know what direction or what route you will be taking. No one ever plans on having an accident but unfortunately they do happen & if you are unable to get back home on your own …..it is important that someone has an idea of where to look for you. I would never want to have to lie in a ditch somewhere for gosh knows how long before someone finally spotted me & called for help. So please ride safe & let someone know where you are going or ride with a friend. It could mean the difference between “life & death”. It won’t be long before us ladies will be thinking of cooking the turkey & all the trimmings. Then when we get done with it will be time to decorate the house for the holidays. My favorite time of the year…….Christmas! It seems to get more hectic each year but so worth all the effort & hard work we pour into it. We are so blessed as all the children are all here close so they all come home for Christmas Eve for a wonderful gathering. One of my sons always says …..“Mom if you put all that stuff ( he calls it stuff) up your going to have to take it all down & it’s going to be cold out”. Oh! How well I know that! But it is so worth it as so many people enjoy all the lights & decorations out in the yard. We even have an inflatable Santa on a trike with his 3 reindeer in his sidecar out in the front yard. The grandchildren and neighbor kids love it! We would like to close wishing you & yours a beautiful holiday season filled with much love, happiness and family to surround you. Let us all remember to be thankful at Thanksgiving time for all the wonderful friends & family that we all have that are near & dear to us. Also for the “awesome” GWTA bike family that we have grown to love & cherish so dearly. Please also remember to keep Christ in your hearts when it comes time for Christmas as he is “the reason for the season”. We would also like to wish all of you a very Happy & Blessed New Year in 2012. See you down the road somewhere soon…..Jr & Karen

Firstly, our next Chapter meeting will be at the „Golden Corral‟ on San Mateo Thursday 20th October, 2011 Come early, enjoy a buffet meal, socialize and then be ready for a nice 6 p.m. meeting with friends and family.

Chapter Q celebrated it‟s Coming out. (Graduation Party) over the weekend of 16th/18th September, 2011 with support from friends arriving in from California, our Region Director (Steve Andrus) and in company with our famous Don Coons (Rider Educator. National), then support from Arizona, Chapter F and then our more close friends in chapter A . Alamogordo , a full weekend of riding and fun was then established with many friends. We enjoyed meeting and greeting members at our host hotel on the Friday p.m. and then savored many a different Ice- Cream at the Shriners facility (Ballut Abyad) until tummies were full and as the clock ticked on, and tired eyes started to show, we made a most unusual decision on leaving the Ice-Cream (WHY when more ice-cream is available) for another time and pleasure as we all retired for a night of rest before the Saturday festivities began. But an evening celebrating with many friends and of course sharing all of those interesting stories of our yesterday.s and then tomorrow‟s. Saturday morning was awakened with the registration at the Host Hotel of members for our Poker Run out to Madrid, where members were met by our Event Riders (Jan and Jeff Bernard) who ensured that ample and cool water was available to all along with smiles and impartiality on allocating the second set of cards. Meanwhile preparations were being made at our Sponsor Motorcycle Store in Albuquerque, The Accessory Pit, for a cook-out and ride games, along with some fun jigsaw kids games that turned out to be real fun watching and of course, participating. Prizes were given for the Poker run. Although our weather continued in good riding style, we did experience a nice sample of a monsoon blast that kind of damped our ideas on ride games (purely on the safety ground). It really did RAIN and wind that had our members holding onto pop-ups to prevent them blowing away. But that is New Mexico. Even with this unfortunate hiccup, we all enjoyed the day and events, and yes, it was fun. The Saturday evening entertainment continued with our evening meal at the Golden Corral where members enjoyed a variety of. eat as much as you can buffet meal, and then made bids on many baskets. that Chapter Q members had made. A splendid array of interesting baskets and then a reverse RAFFLE which was hosted by our friend .John Gilsdorf. from Alamogordo. That was so much fun and everyone in the room appreciated and enjoyed that performance especially when our final winner was Don Coons. Well done Don and our thanks to John for his expertise in this raffle. As members said their farewell to each other and then retired for another night of relaxation we started to make our arrangements for escorting members returning back to Arizona and then to the city limits of Sky City (Acoma) and if never visited, a must to mark on your. must do list. Sunday evening, Rita and I along with Ted and Kathy Bates/Don Coons/Steve Andrus attended a fund-raising dinner (4- course Italian) for the Albuquerque. Ride for Kids. Where once again, Don seemed to continue with his luck on winning something. As the evening wore on, Rita and I ensured that both Don and Steve returned back to the host Hotel for a night of rest before their trip back to California and Oregon. And NO, we did not tuck them up for the night !! On Sunday morning, Rita and I, bid our farewells to visiting members from Alamogordo and as we departed the host hotel with our friends from Arizona and enjoyed the company of Ralph Andrus/Don Coons/Ted & Kathy Bates/Jim Jeffress/Alberta Chase for our onward ride to Sky City. We said our farewells to the Arizona members as we turned and continued with our ride to Acoma City where we eventually rested and admired all that place has to offer, before our ride back to Albuquerque. All-in-all, a good weekend for our Chapter Q (Desert Riders) induction into GWTA and visit with many friends that we all wish to maintain and develop with further comrarderie. Rita and I thank all who participated and will enjoy meeting and greeting with you all soon, God Bless and Ride Safe.

Our special thanks to all Chapter Q members that participated and assisted over that weekend. Special thanks to Jan and Jeff Bernard for all that they did on registration for the event and also their continued support in the Poker Run, also Ted and Kathy Bates/Bob Jacobs/Jan Bernard for wonderful photographs. Many too many to display in this newsletter and 12 OCTOBER 2011 will work with Mark Davis to ensure that they are all listed on our Chapter Website. Rita and I also wish to say a special thank you to all members and their wives who supported our Saturday evening Raffle with baskets that were truly amazing. Prizes donated by members along with those gift cards from the Accessory Pit were awesome and we all fully appreciate your involvement with Chapter Q. We Thank you all.

Since our last meeting in September, we regretfully acknowledge that Dennis and Beverly Elliott have resigned as Assistant Chapter Q Directors due to personal reasons. Know that all of us will wish Dennis/Beverly and family good fortune and health with the knowledge that we are all there for them as and if whenever needed. Know that they will continue to ride with and alongside us for many a year. Take care guys, smile, laugh often and know that you are amongst friends. On that sad note, we offered the position of Assistant Chapter Directors open to all members and after a discussion, Jan and Jeff Bernard were nominated by Dennis Elliott and unanimously accepted by members present. Jan and Jeff Bernard after deliberation, accepted this position, and are now operational Assistant Chapter Directors of GWTA Chapter Q – Desert Riders. Welcome onboard to both Jeff and Jan. No other staff positions were volunteered by members Alan & Rita - Chapter Q Directors

Hello, we are Jeff and Jan B Bernard your Chapter “Q” Assistant Directors.

We have lived in Tijeras, NM for 15 years and before we moved to NM we lived in El Paso, TX for 45 years. YEPPERS, we are TEXANS living in beautiful NM. We have a wonderful son, daughter-in-law and grandson whom we adore. They live in Troy, Michigan. We never see enough of them!!! Jeff works for TRANE in commercial sales. He has been working in heating and cooling for 30 years on both sides of the coin-service and sales. Jan is retired from Allstate Insurance Co. after 23 years in claims. In 2003 Jan decided that they should both be riding their own bikes and so the story goes...... Jeff has a GL1800 white bike and I have a real cool GL1500 (must be seen) Trike along with a neat dog carrier so that my special dog can also enjoy rides with me. She loves to ride. Over the years, Jeff and I have covered many miles enjoying rides with friends and colleagues and look forward to riding with many more friends within GWTA and of course, chapter Q (Desert Riders).

We are very happy to accept Chapter “Q”s Assistant Directors position. We are heavy in heart to see Dennis and Beverly step down though. Thank you both for a job well done!

Please let Alan, Rita, Jeff and myself know just what you, the members, want for your Chapter”Q”.

We want to thank each members for their hard work in making our Chapter “Q”s “graduation party” such a wonderful success and so much fun! Your generosity in giving your time and basket donations has not gone without appreciation and notice. Here‟s to continued fun, friendship and safe riding!!!!!!!!!!! Jeff and Jan

An Ounce Of Prevention Is Worth A Pound Of Cure

Written by: Biker Chad

As our winter is fast approaching, cold northern Climates need to consider some winterization tips. Everyone can benefit from the following information so that you can be ready to roll when spring comes around next year.

Every spring my bike shop was flooded with costly repairs that could have easily been prevented with a little winterization. Who can afford to waste money on unnecessary repairs these days? I will cover the two most common spring repairs we did in this article, along with some things I do before parking my bike for the winter.

The most common problem we fixed each spring was dead batteries. Without putting your battery on a charger thru the winter it may not work at all in spring. Even if it does you have shortened the life of it drastically. You can not just put your bike’s battery on any old charger or even a trickle charger; it must be a smart charger. A smart charger will turn itself off when the battery is fully charged and then keep it charged without damaging the battery by overcharging. These chargers run around $30.00 at any bike shop. They usually come with a connector that you can leave hooked up to your battery all the time, so all you have to do is plug the charger in and forget it. So lets review, $30.00 for a good charger paid by you once, or $70.00 – $100.00 for a new battery paid by you every spring? Sounds like a no-brainer when you look at it that way, doesn’t it?

TOURING NEWS 17 The second most common repair we did every spring, was carburetor rebuilds and fuel injector replacements. When you park your bike all winter with untreated gas in the tank, you are asking for trouble. Within a few weeks gasoline will break down and gum up the fuel system if it is not treated, and the new reformulated gas is even worse at gumming up carburetors and fuel injectors. This leads to some expensive rebuilds at the garage.

So before you park your bike, fill your gas tank to keep internal condensation of water to a minimum over the winter, and add a fuel stabilizer. Follow the directions on the stabilizer bottle to get the correct mix ratio, slosh the tank around to mix the fuel / stabilizer mix. With the stabilizer properly mixed you will need to run the bike to get the stabilizer into the whole fuel system.

If you have a fuel injected bike, start the bike and run it until the engine gets to normal operating temperature (or longer) as this will get the stabilizer all the way through the injectors.

On a carbureted bike (if you have a choke, you have a carburetor) start the bike, run it till it gets to operating temperature (or longer), and then turn the fuel supply to off leaving it run until the engines dies. Now you have successfully taken care of the fuel system for the winter. So again lets review. Spend $10.00 for a bottle of fuel stabilizer, or a few hundred dollars at the garage to rebuild carbs or to change injectors. It’s your call.

Other things I routinely do:

• I stuff steel wool or a shop rags into the end of my mufflers to keep moisture and rodents out of the exhaust, removing them before I start it in spring of course.

• I keep my bike on a bike jack taking the weight off of the tires and suspension, as it will prolong the life of them.

• I always change my engine oil before I park my bike for the winter, and again right after my first spring ride.

• A good thorough wash & dry followed by a detailed waxing of the paint and chrome, will keep the finishes looking good for a long time.

• Last but not least, all that cleaning will be meaningless without a proper breathable bike cover to keep the dust off.

It sounds like a lot to do, but by the time spring rolls around you will be ready to ride. Instead of listening to everyone else ride by your house, as you wait for the repair shop to call. If any one needs any winterization products, smart battery chargers, etc please feel free to contact us at the Road Guardians compound as we can provide almost any motorcycle product you might need. Whether visiting us in person or on the web, we are here for you. If you have any question on this or any of my articles you may e-mail me anytime at [email protected]. Thank you and ride safe.
