Year 4 Home Learning w.c. 04.05.20 Topic ‘Fantastic Mr Fox’ – Science: Living Things

If you are able to read the book ‘Fantastic Mr. Fox’, we highly recommend it! There are lots of different animals in the book. Your science task is to Investigate which animals like to live underground and move around by digging. Which animals live above ground? Which animals only live in water? Can you sort these animals into groups? You can use the internet to research but also have a look in either the garden or the park if you are out for some exercise. DT: Puppets

Can you make your own puppets of the characters in the story? You can use any resources you have at home. Watch this video which gives more information about the puppets in the film adaptation: https://youtu.be/Q5pQvytHIEE Art: Drawing

Your challenge is to draw the seating arrangement for the feast scene. Which animals and family members came along? Where did they sit? PE: Dance

Plan, choreograph and perform a dance for Mr Fox to perform when he arrives at Boggis's Chicken House Number One. Have a look on the Just Dance YouTube page for inspiration: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UChIjW4BWKLqpojTrS_tX0mg. There is a wide range of songs for you to dance to on the page.

Topic: Geography

Look on a local map to find the location of farms and woods in your area. Can you write a description of our local area? What kind of an area is it: rural or urban? How do you know this?

English ‘’ – Roald Dahl This week, we will be focussing on the book ‘Matilda’. Many of you already know the story, and, hopefully, some of you have read the book so are familiar with the characters, the general story line and some of the events. Don’t worry if you aren’t. If you want, you are welcome to listen to the whole story on YouTube. If not, just listen to the chapter relevant to the learning set. 1) Character Descriptions

Read chapter 2 (if you have the book), or listen to ‘Mr Wormwood, the Great Car Dealer’: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hTi_vYJFBkY While you are listening or reading, make a vocabulary bank by writing a list of all the adjectives used to describe in the chapter. You will need the lists later as they will help you think of and write more creative sentences. Draw a picture of Matilda, her mother, her father and brother. Write sentences to go with your pictures using the adjectives from earlier, or use a thesaurus to gather more to describe each character. 2) Acrostic Poem

Read chapter 3 (if you have the book), or listen to ‘The Hat and the Superglue’: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Eghvw8gxrc Why did Matilda play this trick on her dad? Did you see a different side to Matilda? What is an acrostic poem? Listen to this tutorial on acrostic poems: https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/z4mmn39/articles/ztdvw6f. Try writing an acrostic poem about Matilda or one of her family members. Try to use some rhyming words if you can and make it true to the character you are writing it about. 3) Recall an Event

Read chapter 4 (if you have the book), or listen to ‘The Ghost’: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U1DJN9h3NDY Make a brainstorm. In the middle write: ‘Why was Matilda angry?’, and then round the edge write the reasons in note form. Now, make a list of ways in which Matilda could carry out revenge on her dad. If you can, discuss with someone in your house ways in which you can release anger in a realistic way. Have you ever been angry? How did you deal with it? Writing: recall an event when you were angry. What made you angry? How did you react to being angry? If you dealt with it in a negative way, how would you deal with anger now? Write a short descriptive piece or present your learning as a diary entry. 4) Newspaper Article

Read chapter 8 ‘The Trunchbull’ and chapter 9 ‘The Parents’. If you haven’t got a copy of the book, listen to:.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=26XiUkpNM1s and: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BHL1lne1h1o Look at some examples of newspaper artices. Write a newspaper article about the shocking actions of Miss Trunchbull. Try planning your newspaper report before you write it. When writing your newspaper report think about: making your headline short and snappy; in the first sentence sum up what the story is about; write your report in the third person and the past tense; split your newspaper report up into paragraphs to help the reader clearly understand the information; if you use quotes to make your report more interesting, don't forget to use speech marks; use a photo with a caption to give the reader more information; fill your newspaper report with both facts and opinions; facts give the reader all of the information they need by using the 5Ws 5) Cartoon Strip

Read chapter 11 ‘Bruce Bogtrotter and the Cake’: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IO-U4Fet_Tk Miss Trunchbull was a horrible headteacher and gave mean punishments. Bruce Bogtrotter’s punishment was no exception. Can you create a cartoon strip to show what happened to Bruce? Use speech and thought bubbles, and also put a narrative or explanation underneath. Maths White Rose Maths Summer Term 1 Week 2 – Decimals https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-4/ 1) Round Decimals

Watch the ‘Lesson 1 – Round Decimals’ video. Complete the ‘Flashback 4’ first. Today’s focus is rounding decimals. You’ve looked at rounding whole numbers, so can use the same rounding ‘rules’ but apply them to decimals. Next, complete the learning: https://wrm-13b48.kxcdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/homelearning/year-4/Lesson-5-Y4-Summer-Block-1-WO5-Round-decimals-2020.pdf Then, check your answers using the answer sheet. You can answer the questions in your home learning exercise book, or you can print the sheet out if you have access to a printer at home. 2) Halves and Quarters

Watch the ‘Lesson 2 – Halves and quarters’ video. Complete the ‘Flashback 4’. How quickly can you do them? Use the 100 grid to help you understand what halves and quarters are as decimals. Complete the learning after you have watched the video: https://wrm-13b48.kxcdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/homelearning/year-4/Lesson-2-Y4-Summer-Block-1-WO6-Halves-and-quarters-2020.pdf Use the answer sheet to check your answers. 3) Pounds and Pence

Today’s lesson focuses on using decimals when dealing with money. First, watch lesson 3 video ‘Pounds and pence’. When you have watched the video, please complete the activity: https://wrm-13b48.kxcdn.com/wp- content/uploads/2020/homelearning/year-4/Lesson-3-Y4-Summer-Block-2-WO1-Pounds-and-pence-2020.pdf Remember: when counting money, start with the coins with the biggest value first. Make sure you explain in detail and use mathematical language to explain your reasoning. 4) Ordering Money

Watch the ‘Lesson 4 – Ordering money’ video. Remember to always count up money using the biggest value first. Also, in order to compare money, it must all be converted into either pounds or pence. Complete the learning: https://wrm-13b48.kxcdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/homelearning/year-4/Lesson-4-Y4-Summer-Block-2-WO2-Ordering-money-2020.pdf. Use the answer sheet to check how well you did. 5) Maths Challenge

https://wrm-13b48.kxcdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Family-Challenge-Friday-1st.pdf Questions 1-5 are targeted at Year 4, but see how many you can do. Can you work with your family to solve them all?
