  • Wayward Sons: Modern Mythology in Supernatural
Siggard 1 Alison Siggard BYU English Symposium 20 March 2014 Wayward Sons: Modern Mythology in Supernatural “The core notion behind Supernatural was to make a series about urban legends. I think they’re this incredibly rich mythology about the United States,” show creator Eric Kripke said in an interview promoting the show’s two hundredth episode (“Supernatural” at 200”). Since 2005, the cult television show has grown to be something of an underground phenomenon, with legions of dedicated fans. The story of two brothers travelling the country in search of monsters, demons, and ghosts has taken viewers on a ten season long journey of emotional upheavals, social commentary, and dramatic storytelling. As explained by Kripke, the show is set in a world of mythology and urban legends. However, the use of and modification of these motifs leads to something different about Supernatural : it becomes a legend of its own, telling the tale of the Winchester brothers as heroes. Through its use of mythological and folkloric motifs and retellings, Supernatural creates its own mythology, reflecting old archetypes into an epic for a modern age. “Dad wants us to pick up where he left off”: Character Archetypes in Two Heroes’ Journeys Contrary to most heroic stories, the show focuses on two heroes, Sam and Dean Winchester. However, they are two very different types of heroes. Their stories start the same. Twenty-two years before the events of the show begin, the brothers’ mother, Mary, was killed in a mysterious fire in Sam’s nursery. Her death causes John Winchester, the boys’ father, to embark on a journey to discover what killed his wife and to get revenge.

  • Polymediated Narrative: the Case of the Supernatural Episode “Fan Fiction”
International Journal of Communication 10(2016), 748–765 1932–8036/20160005 Polymediated Narrative: The Case of the Supernatural Episode “Fan Fiction” ART HERBIG Indiana University–Purdue University Fort Wayne, USA ANDREW F. HERRMANN East Tennessee State University, USA Modern stories are the product of a recursive process influenced by elements of genre, outside content, medium, and more. These stories exist in a multitude of forms and are transmitted across multiple media. This article examines how those stories function as pieces of a broader narrative, as well as how that narrative acts as a world for the creation of stories. Through an examination of the polymediated nature of modern narratives, we explore the complicated nature of modern storytelling. Keywords: polymedia, narrative, rhetoric, fandom, television, story, convergence, transmedia, Supernatural, serialization, storytelling, mythology, popular, media, technology, audience, showrunner, discourse, myth, culture Whether one starts with the storyteller or the audience, or with ancient mythologies or new narratives, examining and working through stories is more art than science. Particularly in this media age, the definitions of terms such as content, consumption, and authorship are changing (Tyma, Herrmann, & Herbig, 2015). For instance, audiences are no longer assumed to be passive consumers of media. Academics, producers, and advertisers alike attempt to account for the ways they are blogging, Tweeting during broadcasts, Facebooking spoilers, writing fan/slash fiction, or being involved with participatory television talk shows dedicated to one particular series. These people are active participants, both consumers and producers simultaneously. On the other side, the producers, directors, and writers, traditionally thought of as the authors of our public texts, are now forced to interact and react to their audiences in ways that position them as much as interpreter as creator (McGee, 1990).

  • Supernatural' As a Masculine Narrative
NO CHICK FLICK MOMENTS: 'SUPERNATURAL' AS A MASCULINE NARRATIVE April R. Boggs A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS May 2009 Committee: Esther Clinton, Advisor Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor ii ABSTRACT Esther Clinton, Advisor This thesis examines the CW Network series Supernatural (hereafter SPN) as a revitalized masculine text. SPN as a masculine narrative is representative of 21st century conceptions of gender. Part of why it succeeds on the CW (a network aimed at 18 to 34-year-old women) is because it does not adhere to stringent binary thinking on gender. The show has only two main characters, brothers Sam and Dean Winchester, both of whom are meant to be all- American blue collar heroes. Though they are based in this traditional masculine image what sets the brothers apart is the way SPN has updated this very image to apply to contemporary mores. The first chapter examines the brothers’ roots in traditional heroic masculinity, applying a structuralist method of analysis to determine the heroic and narrative forms being used. Axel Olrik’s Epic Laws of Folk Narrative establish the dual-hero narrative tradition from which SPN is derived. Next, I dissect each brother’s individual narrative, utilizing Jan de Vries’ classical hero pattern for Sam and my own traits of the “new American folk hero” for Dean. Continuing in my effort to link the brothers to their traditional roots, I use examples from both folk and popular culture to show the progression of the two hero types in American culture.

  • An Uncertain Poetics of the Intoxicated Narrative: Drugs, Detection, Denouement
AN UNCERTAIN POETICS OF THE INTOXICATED NARRATIVE: DRUGS, DETECTION, DENOUEMENT Sudipto Sanyal A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY August 2013 Committee: Ellen Berry, Advisor Philip Andrew Dickinson Graduate Faculty Representative Supriya Chaudhuri Donald Callen © 2013 Sudipto Sanyal All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Ellen Berry, Advisor This dissertation attempts to examine how certain modes of intoxication touch, affect, transform and underlie the movement of narrative, which has been for the longest time our primary mode of ordering reality. Operating somewhat speculatively, this study contends that that most, if not all, narratives either function in an intoxicated manner, or desire the operations of intoxication. The articulation and untangling of the “intoxicated narrative,” as I have termed it, is the central impulse of this dissertation, which aims at unravelling the constant need for and presence of intoxication that narratives carry in their very grain. To do this, I have examined what I tentatively call narratives of detection, i.e., narratives that unfold roughly in the manner of detective fiction, which I have posited as the dominant genre of modernity. These narratives – dating from the early 19th century to the early 21st – usually (though not always) include the figure of a detective or detective- substitute, operate causally and teleologically, and are apparently set within a framework of strict logic and rationality. At the same time, though, these narratives frequently destabilize, derail and subvert their own logical operations. I connect this derailment to the obscure presence of intoxication (in various forms) that inflects them constantly, because from its very inception, detective fiction appears to have had a subtext of intoxication coursing through its veins.

  • An Exploration on Popular Culture and TV Series Supernatural
Popping the Question: The Question of Popular Culture Issue 4 – Spring 2015 | www.diffractions.net Popping (it) Up: an Diana Gonçalves exploration on popular culture and TV series Universidade Católica Portuguesa | Research Center for Supernatural Communication and Culture Abstract | Supernatural is a TV series created in 2005 that draws inspiration from urban legends, folklore and mythological tales to tell the journey of two brothers who hunt monsters, ghosts and creatures from the underworld in an apocalyptic scenario. This article intends to explore Supernatural as a reflection of/on the present time, its main concerns and practices. First, it analyzes the show as part of a post-9/11 culture that is deeply affected by the events of 2001 and the underlying sense of terror. Even though the show privileges the horror genre as a framework to deal with 9/11-ensued fears and anxieties, it also brings into play many other genres that blur its categorization and reproduce today’s fast pace and fluidity. Second, the article looks at how the show integrates and has been integrated into contemporary pop culture. Supernatural is known for pushing the boundaries, communicating with other cultural products, self-referencing and interacting with the audience, thus fostering an active interchange between the show, pop culture products, different media, and viewers. The article therefore understands Supernatural as both a cultural manifestation and a manifestation of culture, a product that impacts popular culture and is, in turn, impacted by it. It investigates how the present social, cultural and political context in America has influenced the creation of the series and its plot, and how the use of popular culture references, which pop up regularly throughout the show and create a sublayer of meaning the viewer must decode and interpret, has become a distinctive characteristic of the show and a key factor for its success and durability.
