“Rhythm Is Gonna Get You”-- Gloria Estefan and the Miami Sound Machine (1987) Added to the National Registry: 2017 Essay by Ilan Stavans (guest post)* “Let It Loose” album cover 45rpm single Enrique Garcia Gloria Estefan’s “Rhythm Is Gonna Get You,” which represents the apex of Cuban influence on American R&B, also serves as a thermometer for Latino assimilation to the United States, especially in Miami, which was always Estefan’s base. The song came about shortly before her bus accident in 1990, as she was touring, an event that marked her profoundly, physically and creatively. As such, it represents her “early” style and approach, in comparison with a later period in which Estefan would invoke her Cuban roots and upbringing in more concrete fashion. Along with “Conga,” “Bad Boy,” “Get on Your Feet,” “Party Time,” and about half a dozen more, the song made Estefan internationally known. Performed together with Estefan’s group, Miami Sound Machine, founded by her husband Emilio Estefan, it is part of the immensely successful album “Let It Loose” (1987), which went multi-platinum. The song itself was Top 5 on the US Billboard Top 100. It came to define R&B and become a staple of the post-disco disco era because of its eminently danceable qualities. Indeed, most people associate it with an Americanized version of Latin twirl. Estefan is originally from Havana (she was born in 1957). She and her family—her father was a motor escort for dictator Fulgencio Batista’s wife—were part of a massive wave of mostly upper- and middle-class Cubans who moved to the United States in the 1960s, absconding Fidel Castro’s Communist regime.

  • Heritage Month
HARRIS BEACH RECOGNIZES NATIONAL HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH National Hispanic Heritage Month in the United States honors the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America. We’re participating at Harris Beach by spotlighting interesting Hispanic public figures, and facts about different countries, and testing your language skills. As our focus on National Hispanic Heritage Month continues, this week we focus on a figure from the world of sports: Roberto Clemente, who is known as much for his accomplishments as humanitarian as he is for his feats on the field of play. ROBERTO CLEMENTE Roberto Enrique Clemente Walker of Puerto Rico, born August 18, 1934, has the distinction of being the first Latin American and Caribbean player to be inducted in the National Baseball Hall of Fame. He played right field over 18 seasons for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Clemente’s untimely death established the precedent that, as an alternative to the five-year retirement period, a player who has been deceased for at least six months is eligible for entry into the Hall of Fame. Clemente was the youngest of 7 children and was raised in Barrio San Antón, Carolina, Puerto Rico. During his childhood, his father worked as foreman of sugar crops located in the municipality and, because the family’s resources were limited, Clemente worked alongside his father in the fields by loading and unloading trucks. Clemente was a track and field star and Olympic hopeful before deciding to turn his full attention to baseball. His interest in baseball showed itself early on in childhood with Clemente often times playing against neighboring barrios.

United States Court of Appeals For the First Circuit Nos. 12-2364, 12-2367 UNITED STATES, Appellee, v. WENDELL RIVERA-RUPERTO, a/k/a Arsenio Rivera, Defendant, Appellant. APPEALS FROM THE UNITED STATES DISTRICT COURT FOR THE DISTRICT OF PUERTO RICO [Hon. Juan M. Pérez-Giménez, U.S. District Judge] Before Torruella, Lipez, and Thompson, Circuit Judges. H. Manuel Hernández for appellant. Robert J. Heberle, Attorney, Public Integrity Section, Criminal Division, U.S. Department of Justice, with whom Francisco A. Besosa-Martínez, Assistant United States Attorney, Nelson Pérez-Sosa, Assistant United States Attorney, Chief, Appellate Division, and Rosa Emilia Rodríguez-Vélez, United States Attorney, were on brief, for appellee. January 13, 2017 THOMPSON, Circuit Judge. This case arises out of a now- familiar, large-scale FBI investigation known as "Operation Guard Shack," in which the FBI, in an effort to root out police corruption throughout Puerto Rico, orchestrated a series of staged drug deals over the course of several years.1 For his participation in six of these Operation Guard Shack drug deals, Defendant- Appellant Wendell Rivera-Ruperto stood two trials and was found guilty of various federal drug and firearms-related crimes. The convictions resulted in Rivera-Ruperto receiving a combined sentence of 161-years and 10-months' imprisonment. Although Rivera-Ruperto raises similar challenges in his appeals from the two separate trials, each trial was presided over by a different district judge. Thus, there are two cases on appeal, and we address the various challenges today in separate opinions.2 In this present appeal from the first trial, Rivera- Ruperto argues that the district court committed reversible errors when it: (1) denied his claim for ineffective assistance of counsel during the plea-bargaining stage; (2) failed to instruct the jury that it was required to find drug quantity beyond a reasonable 1 See, e.g., United States v.

  • “Standardization of Cultural Products in Latin Pop-Music”
“STANDARDIZATION OF CULTURAL PRODUCTS IN LATIN POP-MUSIC” RESEARCH PAPER PREPARED FOR THE 28TH ANNUAL ILASSA CONFERENCE ON LATIN AMERICA TO BE HELD AT THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT AUSTIN FROM FEBRUARY 7TH THROUGH FEBRUARY 9TH ISRAEL ALONSO CHAVEZ LATIN AMERICAN AND CARIBBEAN CENTER FLORIDA INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY MIAMI, FLORIDA [email protected] 2008 Introduction 2 This work represents the initial stage of a project whose seed germinated thanks in part to what seems to be an ongoing debate between two different approaches to music in the sociological field. The first approach puts much of its emphasis on the functional dimension of music. That is, on the social functions it performs, enables and enhances; but also on its economic functionality. The subservience of music to economic ends does not imply a loss in terms of creativity for the representatives of this perspective. The second perspective does not deny that music fulfills certain economic and social functions. Yet, unlike the former, the latter warns against the atrophy of creativity that can be brought about by the models implented by “the culture industries”, to use Theodor W. Adorno’s concept. My concern here lies with the question of whether the claims made by this important member of the Frankfurt school about the products of “the culture industries” can be substantiated with empirical evidence. I want to investigate whether popular music (Latin pop music in this case) is indeed, as Adorno says, just another standardized product fashioned after the formulas of “the culture industries”. This work, however, forms part of a broader preoccupation with the issue of musical style, what causes it and what makes it change.
