The vision is to work as a branding tool and be kept as a standard to help guide all future decisions regarding civic, social, residential, and business development in Downtown. Actions that work towards fulfilling the vision should be implemented and ones that do not should be abandoned. Downtown Prescott has clear potential for appeal to residents and visitors through its waterfront beauty and its heritage buildings. While the town conducts seasonal events like the St. Lawrence Shakespeare Festival, it does not provide a seamless experience that encourages and facilitates residents and visitors to go from an event to then visiting a retail store or dining downtown. Downtown Prescott needs to create this holistic experience to draw in and keep its visitors returning to the downtown core. 2.0 VISION Downtown Prescott will take the relaxed lifestyle and affordability that is provided and extend this into an environment where greater and lengthier visitation will occur and new residents will be attracted. -

REMAKING DOWNTOWN TORONTO: POLITICS, DEVELOPMENT, AND PUBLIC SPACE ON YONGE STREET, 1950-1980 DANIEL G. ROSS A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY GRADUATE PROGRAMME IN HISTORY YORK UNIVERSITY, TORONTO, ONTARIO MARCH 2017 © DANIEL G. ROSS, 2017 Abstract This study explores the history of Toronto’s iconic downtown Yonge Street and the people who contested its future, spanning a period from the 1950s through to 1980 when the street was seldom out of the news. Through detailed analysis of a range of primary sources, it explores how the uses and public meanings of this densely-built commercial strip changed over time, in interaction with the city transforming around it. What emerges is a street that, despite fears for its future, remained at the heart of urban life in Toronto, creating economic value as a retail centre; pushing the boundaries of taste and the law as a mass-entertainment destination; and drawing crowds as a meeting place, pedestrian corridor, and public space. Variously understood as an historic urban landscape and an embarrassing relic, a transportation route and a people place, a bastion of Main Street values and a haven for big-city crime and sleaze, from the 1950s through the 1970s Yonge was at the centre of efforts to improve or reinvent the central city in ways that would keep pace with, or even lead, urban change. This thesis traces the history of three interventions—a pedestrian mall, a clean-up campaign aimed at the sex industry, and a major redevelopment scheme—their successes and failures, and the larger debates they triggered. -

STAFF REPORT ACTION REQUIRED Pedestrian Zones – Gould Street/Victoria Street, and Willcocks Street Date: August 5, 2011 To: Toronto and East York Community Council Acting Director, Toronto and East York District, Transportation Services From: Director, Public Realm Section, Transportation Services Wards: Toronto Centre-Rosedale, Ward 27 and Trinity-Spadina, Ward 20 Reference p:\2011\ClusterB\tra\pr\te11003pr Number: SUMMARY This report is about a matter for which the Community Council has delegated authority from City Council to make a final decision. It is recommended that two pedestrian zones – one on Gould and Victoria Streets at Ryerson University, and one on Willcocks Street at the University of Toronto – be temporarily extended for an additional six months, to enable staff to report back on proposed permanent closures, with ongoing operation, maintenance and programming during the temporary extension at no cost to the taxpayer. RECOMMENDATIONS Transportation Services recommends that Toronto and East York Community Council: 1. Approve extending the temporary closure to vehicular traffic of Gould Street, between O'Keefe Lane and Bond Street, of Victoria Street, between Gould Street and a point approximately 64 metres south of Gould Street, and of Willcocks Street, between Huron Street and St. George Street, all as shown on Appendices A and B attached to the report dated August 5, 2011 from the Acting Director of Toronto East York District and the Director of the Public Realm Section, for a further period of six months commencing October 1, 2011. 2. Direct Transportation Services to report back to City Council through the Toronto and East York Community Council on the proposed permanent closure to vehicular Staff report for action on Extending Term of Pilot Pedestrian Zones 1 traffic of the pedestrian zones described in Recommendation 1 on Gould Street, Victoria Street and Willcocks Street, prior to the expiry of the six month extension period. -
