Homecomings: Poetic reformulations of dwelling in Jo Shapcott, Alice Oswald, and Lavinia Greenlaw Janne Stigen Drangsholt, University of Stavanger Abstract In the study The Last of England?, Randall Stevenson refers to the idea of landscape as “the mainstay of poetic imagination” (Stevenson 2004:3). With the rise of the postmodern idiom, our relationship to the “scapes” that surround us has become increasingly problematic and the idea of place is also increasingly deferred and dis- placed. This article examines the relationship between self and “scapes” in the poetries of Jo Shapcott, Alice Oswald and Lavinia Greenlaw, who are all concerned with various “scapes” and who present different, yet connected, strategies for negotiating our relationships to them. Keywords: shifting territories; place; contemporary poetry; postmodernity In The Last of England?, Randall Stevenson points to how the mid- century renunciation of empire was followed by changes that need to be understood primarily in terms of loss. Each of these losses are conceived as marking the last of a certain kind of England, he says, and while another England gradually emerged, this was an England less unified by tradition and more open in outlook, lifestyle, and culture, in short, a place characterised by factors that render it more difficult to define (cf. Stevenson 2004: 1-10). Along with these losses in terms of national character, Stevenson holds, the English landscape also seemed to be increasingly imperilled. While this landscape had traditionally been “the mainstay of poetic imagination” it now seemed in danger of disappearing, as signalled in Philip Larkin’s poem “Going, Going”, where he laments an “England gone, / The shadows, the meadows, the lanes” (Stevenson 2004: 3). -

Spotlight the Newsletter for English Faculty Alumni
Spotlight The newsletter for English Faculty Alumni July 2020 | Issue 6 This newsletter is coming from our newly virtual Faculty. We closed the doors to the St Cross building on 24 March 2020, and have since been finding new and creative ways to work with our students until we reopen in Michaelmas Term. Despite the tumultuous and unpredictable nature of life in a world with COVID- 19, we've managed to navigate new technologies which have enabled us to continue teaching and research from afar. Thanks to the support of TORCH (The Oxford Research Centre in the Humanities) we've even managed to host our first ever online Professor of Poetry lecture with Alice Oswald, plus take part in numerous other online events including: The Social Life of Books, Invalids on the Move, and Shakespeare and the Plague (hosted by the University as part of Oxford at Home). These are all still available to watch (click on the links to be taken to the recordings). We also participated in the University’s Online Open Days at the beginning of July with video recordings by staff and students and live Q&As. Members of the Faculty have secured funding for projects which offer a response to the repercussions of COVID-19: Professor Sally Shuttleworth for Contagion Cabaret, and Dr Stuart Lee for Lockdown 2020. We were also delighted to be recognised with an Athena Swan Bronze Award in May. The award recognises commitment to the advancement of gender equality in higher education and research institutions. Black Lives Matter has seen us look to our teaching, syllabi, and recruitment and retention of staff to see how we can positively effect change in our Faculty. -

Family Album is a portfolio of poems concerning the themes of genealogy, history and family. It also explores the use of devices such as voice, the visual, the body and place as an exploration of identity. Family Album includes family elegies, narrative poems and commissioned work. The dissertation represents the first study of length about black women's poetry in Britain. Dealing with a historical tradition dating back to the eighteenth century, this thesis focuses on a recent selection of black women poets since the late 1970s. -

We can look forward to much that is local and special. Michael Chaplin takes us on a trip along the river. Harry Pearson provides a personal view of twenty years of North East football. Chris Phipps re-lives the time when Newcastle was capital of cool – the years of The Tube. Live Theatre, a creative treasure that goes from strength to strength will be celebrated. There is a virtual tour of much- loved Whitby and delicate meditations on Lancashire beaches. As an avid listener to BBC radio, I am particularly looking forward to Radio Postcards – producer Sarah Blunt’s vivid sound pictures. Local historians look back to a time when the Tyne bustled with industry and further afield, Kate Adie views the First World War through the eyes of the women who struggled for admission into this world of men. Also in the mix we find crime with Ann Cleeves, Hazel Osmond and Mari Hannah, and master storyteller David Almond launches the festival in a new collaboration with Jack Arthurs. Yorkshire Poetry, 1954-2019: Language, Identity, Crisis
YORKSHIRE POETRY, 1954-2019: LANGUAGE, IDENTITY, CRISIS Kyra Leigh Piperides Jaques, BA (Hons) and MA, (Hull) PhD University of York English & Related Literature October 2019 This work was supported by the Arts & Humanities Research Council (grant number AH/L503848/1) through the White Rose College of the Arts & Humanities. ABSTRACT This thesis explores the writing of a large selection of twentieth- and twenty-first- century East and West Yorkshire poets, making a case for Yorkshire as a poetic place. The study begins with Philip Larkin and Ted Hughes, and concludes with Simon Armitage, Sean O’Brien and Matt Abbott’s contemporary responses to the EU Referendum. Aside from arguing the significance of Yorkshire poetry within the British literary landscape, it presents poetry as a central form for the region’s writers to represent their place, with a particular focus on Yorkshire’s languages, its identities and its crises. Among its original points of analysis, this thesis redefines the narrative position of Larkin and scrutinizes the linguistic choices of Hughes; at the same time, it identifies and explains the roots and parameters of a fascinating new subgenre that is emerging in contemporary West Yorkshire poetry. This study situates its poems in place whilst identifying the distinct physical and social geographies that exist, in different ways, throughout East and West Yorkshire poetry. Of course, it interrogates the overarching themes that unite the two regions too, with emphasis on the political and historic events that affected the region and its poets, alongside the recurring insistence of social class throughout many of the poems studied here. -
