Mrinmoy Pal University Of Kalyani, West Bengal 741235 Abstract: Dokra or Dhokra is one of the important ancient craft in India. Like other crafts it also being practiced in some districts of Bengal. One of such important village i.e.bikna village in Bankura district upholds this tradition from its ancient past. The craftsmen involved in this craft making process are now facing lots of problem to sustain their craftsmanship as well as their cultural identity. Family members of the village practiced these traditional metal sculpture processes by making figures of different things keeping in mind from its social concern. This technique was traced far as an ancient Chola Dynasty to make various Chola bronzes statues. First a figure was made of wax or other medium like dhuna .This was covered with clay and allow drying, a tiny hole was made on it. When it heated the molten brass replaced the original impression. Villagers involve in these craft making process, they neither have any agricultural land nor any other source of income. It becomes difficult to lead their lives depending totally on these product materials as they hardly get reliable prices and hold the demands throughout the year. A case study made on it tries to promote the product materials along with their socio-economic view point of lives and take an initiative to provide a better opportunity to strengthen their craftsmanship.

EMPOWERING THE DOKRA ARTISANS THROUGH THE ACCESSIBILITY OF FINANCIAL RESOURCES FOR SURVIVAL OF THEIR INDIGENOUS TECHNOLOGY – A STUDY OF WEST BENGAL, INDIA SRIPARNA GUHA 1, DR ARUN BANERJEE 2 & DR ANIRBAN MANDAL 3 1Research Scholar & Assistant Professor, Department of Managmeent, Brainware University, India 2Adjunct Professor, Department of Managmeent, Brainware University, India 3Associate Professor, Department of Management, Brainware University, India ABSTRACT Handicraft industries that continue to play an significant role in rural industries in the survival and development of rural people from developing countries, such as India. Indigenous enterprises that have a clear connection with indigenous territory depend predominantly on local capital and give the rural population employment. The art of casting with wax lost technology, also known as Dokra art, is an old art in India and seems to have existed since the OriginalArticle earliest days of settled culture in the subcontinent in an uninterrupted tradition. The ancient Dokra art craft of Dariapur village of Burdwan district and Bikana village of Bankura district of West Bengal (India) is not an exception of this concept. It is very difficult to maintain this ancient Dokra art and design on the market in a competitive environment today, with the fashion and luxury industry taking maximum share. But only the love and admiration of these craftsmen for their work make comparison with modern society possible. The paper attempts, by illustrating the numerous problems associated with this craft, to research the subsistence and socioeconomic conditions of Dokra workers from those two villages, with the aim of preserving their heritage in the future and concentrates on the accessibility of financial resources so that they can sustain a proper livelihood.

  • A Case Study of Bankura District, West Bengal, India
The International Journal Of Humanities & Social Studies (ISSN 2321 - 9203) www.theijhss.com THE INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF HUMANITIES & SOCIAL STUDIES Current Status of Dokra Craft in Bikna: A Case Study of Bankura District, West Bengal, India Payel Kundu Guest Lecturer, Department of Geography Bankura Zilla Saradamani Mahila Mahavidyapith & Bankura Sammilani College, West Bengal, India Abstract: Handcraft industries play an important role in the livelihood and economy of rural people of the developing countries like India. The ancient craft ‘dokra’ of Bikna village is not an exception of this concept. Dokra metal casting is one of the oldest traditional techniques of metal casting in India. In recent year, the products of Dokra artisans are in great demand in domestic and foreign market because of its medieval simplicity enhancing folk motifs and forceful form. But in today’s globalised world where fashion and luxury industries take maximum share in trading market, it is so difficult for sustenance of dokra art and craft in the market. But only their love and respect to their occupation make it possible to run parallel with modern society. Despite its high demand in international market and wide geographical importance, the dokra artisans of bikna are facing a lot of problems. So, the proposed research study is a modest attempt to provide an account of dokra craft in Bankura and socio-economic condition of Bikna village. In this paper, various problems relating with this art has been assessed and an attempt regarding solution of problems has been also suggested. Keywords: Handcraft industry, ‘Dokra Craft’, ‘Lost Wax Proce ss’, ‘Kain kuya Mal’, ‘Learned by being’, socio-economic condition.

Journal of Economics and Development Studies June 2014, Vol. 2, No. 2, pp. 233-245 ISSN: 2334-2382 (Print), 2334-2390 (Online) Copyright © The Author(s). 2014. All Rights Reserved. Published by American Research Institute for Policy Development Economics of Eco-friendly Terracotta Products in Bankura District of West Bengal Dr. Bikash Kumar Ghosh1 Abstract Bankura district of West Bengal has great potential for expansion of activity in medium small scale & cottage industry. The structure of the cluster (production unit) of terracotta is very unique, highly concentrated and most of the units work single handedly with the help of all family members including young boys and girls. The study reveals that net economic returns of terracotta production are markedly high for the marginal workers during the current year of study and labour cost works out to be the major contribution. But due to shrinkage of the market, presence of market middleman and some important constraints the income of the households are not regular and economic conditions are very low in the present economic perspective. There should be more encouragement from the Government or from the State Craft’s council to promote the Craft at National Level. More Exhibitions and Sales outlet should be done so that common people get to know more about the Terracotta Craft. Also a good Network should be build at National Level to bring out the Terracotta crafts to the tourists. The Craftsmen should be given exposition to the outer world so that they know what people like and what they should add more to their crafts.

High School, East Medinipur, W.B., India Abstract Dokra metal casting is one of the oldest traditional techniques of metal casting in India. The word Dokra was used to specify a group of craftsmen of traveling type, scattered over Andhra Pradesh, Orissa, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, and West Bengal and were identified by their beautifully fashioned and ornamented metal goods. The craftsmen have later on established in some areas of Bankura, Bardwan, and Midnapur districts of West Bengal parting their nomadic nature. Of all craftsmen in West Bengal, these metal smiths are generally most mistreated as social outcasts. In current years, this eternal tradition of wonderfully fashioned, decorated and handcrafted goods of Dokra artisans are in immense command in domestic and foreign marketplace because of its primitive plainness and enthralling folk motifs. This is despite the fact that the demand for their products is very high including in international markets, the dokra artisans of Bikna and Dariapur are facing a lot of problems. To highlight the basic problems of dokra crafts and artisans is the theme of this article. Key Words: Dokra craft, The Cire Perdue Technique.
