Johannes Vermeer's Head of a Young Girl, Carl Fabritius' Goldfinch, Frans Hals' Laughing Boy and three masterworks by Rembrandt will be on view, as will paintings by Jan Steen, Jan van Goyen, Jacob van Ruisdael, Gerard ter Borch and other masters from this unsurpassed period of Dutch art. Itinerary: After opening at the National Gallery, the exhibition will travel to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (October 6, 1982 - January 30, 1983); the Art Institute of Chicago (February 26, 1983 - May 29, 1983); and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (June 30, 1983 - September 11, 1983). A Brief History
Set in the middle of a 1,500 acre estate surrounded by stunningly beautiful parkland on the River Boyne, Slane Castle is a superb & unique venue for your wedding. A Brief History Slane Castle celebrated its bicentennial year in 1985, an occasion that was marked by the official opening of the Castle to the public. The Castle as you see it today was reconstructed under the direction of William Burton Conyngham, & his nephew the first Marquess Conyngham, who inherited the Slane Estate from his uncle General Henry Conyngham on his death in 1796. This reconstruction commenced in 1785, & is principally the work of James Gandon, James Wyatt & Francis Johnston. Francis Johnston, one of Ireland’s most distinguished architects, is responsible for the dramatic gothic gates on the Mill Hill in Slane. The present head of the Conyngham family is the eighth Marquess Conyngham, known formerly as Henry, the Earl of Mount Charles. Lord Henry is proudly continuing an active association between the Conynghams & Slane Castle dating back to the beginning of the eighteenth century. Throughout the centuries, Slane Castle has entertained a variety of guests from historical figures including King George IV – for whom the Ballroom was originally designed – to modern legends like U2, the Red Hot Chilli Peppers & The Rolling Stones. Indeed, it has become famed worldwide as the original Rock ‘n Roll castle. Allaert van Everdingen (Alkmaar 1621 - Amsterdam 1675) Month of August (Virgo): The Harvest brush and grey and brown wash 11.1 x 12.8 cm (4⅜ x 5 in) The Month of August (Virgo): The Harvest has an extended and fascinating provenance. Sold as part of a complete set of the twelve months in 1694 to the famed Amsterdam writer and translator Sybrand I Feitama (1620-1701), it was passed down through the literary Feitama family who were avid collectors of seventeenth-century Dutch works on paper.¹ The present work was separated from the other months after their 1758 sale and most likely stayed in private collections until 1936 when it appeared in Christie’s London saleroom as part of the Henry Oppenheimer sale. Allaert van Everdingen was an exceptional draughtsman who was particularly skilled at making sets of drawings depicting, with appropriate images and activities, the twelve months of the year.² This tradition was rooted in medieval manuscript illumination, but became increasingly popular in the context of paintings, drawings and prints in the sixteenth century.³ In the seventeenth century, the popularity of such themed sets of images began to wane, and van Everdingen’s devotion to the concept was strikingly unusual. He seems to have made at least eleven sets of drawings of the months, not as one might have imagined, as designs for prints, but as artistic creations in their own right. Six of these sets remain intact, while Davies (see lit.) has reconstructed the others, on the basis of their stylistic and physical characteristics, and clues from the early provenance of the drawings. -

Press release Amsterdam Museum 25 February 2015 Rare cityscape by Jacob van Ruisdael of Budapest on loan at the Portrait Gallery of the Golden Age exhibition For a period of one year commencing on the 27th of February, the Portrait Gallery of the Golden Age exhibition will be enriched with a rare cityscape by Jacob van Ruisdael (1628-1682) from the Szépmüvészeti Múzeum (Museum of Fine Arts) in Budapest: View of the Binnenamstel in Amsterdam. The canvas shows Amsterdam in approximately 1655, shortly before Amstelhof was built, the property in which the Hermitage Amsterdam is currently situated. The painting is now back in the city where it was created, for the first time since 1800. With this temporary addition, visitors to the Portrait Gallery of the Golden Age can experience how the city looked around 350 years ago seen from the place where they will end up after their visit. There are only a few known cityscapes by Jacob van Ruisdael. Usually, with this perhaps most "Dutch" landscape painter, the city would at best figure in the background, as in his views of Haarlem, Alkmaar, Egmond and Bentheim. Only in Amsterdam, where he is documented as being a resident from 1657, did he stray a few times within the city walls. It has only recently been established properly and precisely which spot in which year is depicted on the painting. Curator of paintings, sketches and prints Norbert Middelkoop from the Amsterdam Museum described it last year in an entry for the catalogue on the occasion of the Rembrandt and the Dutch Golden Age exhibition in the Szépmüvészeti Múzeum in Budapest. -

PLUNKETT The one remains —the many change and pass' (Shelley) 1: ROOTS THE SUFFOLKINSTITUTE of Archaeology and History had its birth 150 years ago, in the spring of 1848, under the title of The Bury and West Suffolk Archaeological Institute. It is among the earliest of the County Societies, preceded only by Northamptonshire and Lincolnshire (1844), Norfolk (1846), and the Cambrian, Bedfordshire, Sussex and Buckinghamshire Societies (1847), and contemporary with those of Lancashire and Cheshire. Others, equally successful, followed, and it is a testimony to the social and intellectual timeliness of these foundations that most still flourish and produce Proceedingsdespite a century and a half of changing approaches to the historical and antiquarian materials for the study of which they were created. The immediate impetus to this movement was the formation in December 1843 of the British ArchaeologicalAssociationfor the Encouragementand Preservationof Researchesinto the Arts ancl Monumentsof theEarly and MiddleAges, which in March 1844 produced the first number of the ArchaeologicalJ ournal.The first published members' list, of 1845, shows the members grouped according to the counties in which they lived, indicating the intention that the Association should gather information from, and disseminate discourses into, the counties through a national forum. The thirty-six founding members from Suffolk form an interesting group from a varied social spectrum, including the collector Edward Acton (Grundisburgh), Francis Capper Brooke (Ufford), John Chevallier Cobbold, Sir Thomas Gery Cullum of Hawstead, David Elisha Davy, William Stevenson Fitch, the Ipswich artists Fred Russel and Wat Hagreen, Professor Henslow, Alfred Suckling, Samuel Tyrnms, John Wodderspoon, the Woodbridge geologist William Whincopp, Richard Almack, and the Revd John Mitford (editor of Gentleman'sMagazine). -
