Agricultural Development Systems: Egypt Project University of California Davis, Ca 95616 INTRODUCTION

This bibliography began as a list of materials purchased (or xeroxed) for the Cairo office of ADS/Egypt, and a parallel collection for the Agricultural Economics Library at the University of California, Davis, relating mainly to agricultural economics, which soon broadened to include nutrition, migration, and a host of other topics in the social-science literature. It did not seem easy to draw a line to say that certain materials were irrelevant to the concerns of people dealing with agricultural policy. This sturdy rationale, combined with my compulsive bibliomania, has led to this large collection of titles. The bibliography will be useful to a wider audience than that for which it was originally intended, the particpants in ADS/Egypt research activities.

The principal sort of material absent is Ph.D. theses. Some few are included, but these are principally ones which have been cited in the literature. The excuse for not citing more is of course that for the most part they have appeared in the published literature if their caliber is high. In addition, they are adequately indexed, for the United States in Dissertation Abstracts and for the United Kingdom in Peter Sluglett's newly available Theses on Islam, the and North-West Africa, 1880-1978,Accepted by Universities in the United Kingdom and Ireland (London: Mansell, 1983), which devotes pages 55 to 68 to these on Egypt, arranged by broad subject.

I have included English-language material only. Writers in French and German seem to generate little of genuine use which is not available in translation. (I'll look hard for such material for the next edition.) There is much material in Arabic which it would be useful to cite, but the library at Davis does not stock materials in Arabic, and it seemed unwise to list materials which I could not see, nor for that matter make intelligible, since, as the Census of Pakistan puts it in one of its categories, I "read Arabic without understanding." John Waterbury's recent book, The Egypt of Nasser and Sadat lists many sources in Arabic, but gives titles in English only, which makes the bibliographic utility of the references slight, although not actually negative. Happy hunting.

A word about what "recent" means in the title. This bibliography tries to be complete on social science for the last few years, say back to 1979, and goes back to the end of the Nasser era with attenuated coverage, although the intent is ultimately (in a later edition) to be complete back to that point. I have ignored history proper nearly entirely, although economic history is here. Perhaps a later edition will rectify that defect, too.

One particular category of materials is worth special note. I have listed all the materials produced by contractors to U.S. A.I.I1 which have found their way into ARDA, the A.I.D. Research and Development Abstracts. One can get either paper copies or micro-fiche copies of the items listed in ARDA, by writing AID/DIHF/ARDA, 7222 47th St., Chevy Chase MD 20815 or dealing with U.S. A.I.D. missions abroad. Each such entry in this bibliography carries the relevant order number (of the form PN-AAG-717) and the location in ARDA of the abstract. The U.C. Davis library has microfiche copy of all materials listed in ARDA beginning with Volume 8, No. 1 (1980), and will continue to acquire future materials.

Most of the materials listed here are available in the libraries of the University of California at Davis. With some few rarer items, I have indicated Most of the materials listed here are available in the libraries of the University of California at Davis. With some few rarer items, I have indicated their presence here by the use of Davis's standard interlibrary-loan symbol at the end of the entry: CUA. The Agricultural Economics Library has some of the more fugitive materials, and xeroxes of many articles from journals not available at Davis. Some such materials here bear the symbol CUA/AE. Such materials appear in the card catalog of the Agricultural Economics Library, but not in the card catalog of the main library.

Many people have contributed to gathering these materials. My research assistants have endured much tedium: James M. Hunter, Lawrence Moss, Dennis King, and Robert West. John Rowntree has frequently been helpful, as has Alan Richards. Kathy Fisk cheerfully typed the manuscript.

In view of the fact that I plan a future edition, it would be helpful if users would report items I have missed or errors of other sorts. I am available c/o Economics Department, University of California, Davis CA 95616. LIST OF HEADINGS
