2020 Louisiana Softball Softball SOFTBALL 2020 LOUISIANA SOFTBALL HISTORY AND RECORDS BOOK RAGIN’ CAJUNS IN THE WOMEN’S COLLEGE WORLD SERIES 1993 – Third Place ASA Hall of Fame Stadium Oklahoma City, Okla. 1993 May 28-31, 1993 The Cajuns advance to the Women’s College World Series for the first time in program history. UL finished third and captured a win over eventual-champion Arizona. 1995 1995 – Fifth Place The second appearance at the ASA Hall of Fame Stadium Women’s College World Series Oklahoma City, Okla. was highlighted by Cheryl May 25-28, 1995 Longeway’s no-hitter in the 1996 – Fifth Place Golden Park Stadium 1996 Columbus, Ga. For the second straight season the May 23-27, 1996 Ragin’ Cajuns advanced to the Women’s College World Series. This year’s WCWS was played in Columbus, Ga. 2003 – Seventh Place 2003 ASA Hall of Fame Stadium The Cajuns earn a berth to Oklahoma City Oklahoma City, Okla. for the first time under co-head coaches May 22-26, 2003 Stefni and Michael Lotief. This trip will be remembered for Danyele Gomez’s mammoth home run off of Texas’ Cat Osterman. 2008 The second trip to OKC under Stefni 2008 – Fifth Place and Michael Lotief’s guidance saw ASA Hall of Fame Stadium the Cajuns defeat No. 1 national Oklahoma City, Okla. seed Florida in the opener. May 29-June 4, 2008 2014 – Seventh Place 2014 ASA Hall of Fame Stadium Louisiana defeated traditional powers Texas Oklahoma City, Okla. (regional) and Arizona (super regional) at May 29-June 4, 2014 Lamson Park to garner the program’s sixth trip to the WCWS. It marked the first time since 1996 that the Cajuns clinched a trip to Oklahoma City on their home field. Ragin’ Cajuns All-American Quick Facts • Former Ragin’ Cajuns co-head coach Stefni (Whitton) Lotief was Louisiana’s first-ever All-American in 1989. She became the first, First Team All-American a year later (1990). • Louisiana had at least one All-American honoree for a program-record nine straight seasons from 1989- 97, then eight straight seasons from 1999-2006. The program has produced at least one selection in 27 of the last 31 seasons (1989-2019). • Louisiana has had 18 first-team selections. • The Ragin’ Cajuns had six players named All-Americans during the 1994 and 1995 seasons (program record). • Sixteen (16) times Louisiana has had multiple All- American selections in a single season. The Ragin’ Danyele Gomez Cajuns had at least two All-American selections each 2003 All-American season from 2011 through 2017. 2005 All-American 2006 First Team All-American Brooke Mitchell • Thirty-three (33) different student-athletes have 2004 First Team combined to give Louisiana its 54 All-America awards. All-American • In 2004, Brooke Mitchell (2002-05) joined Stefni Whitton (1987-90), Kyla Hall (1991-94) and Cheryl Longeway (1995-96) as the only pitchers in program history to be named first team All-Americans. • Fifteen (15) different student-athletes have garnered All-American honors twice or more in their career. Lynn Britton (1993-96) is the only one to attain All- American accolades four times. • Danyele Gomez (2003-06) and Lexie Elkins (2014-16) are the most recent student-athletes in Ragin’ Cajuns softball history to earn All-American status three times in a career. They join Lynn Britton (1993-96), Kyla Hall (1991-94), Stephanie DeFeo (1994-97) and Tiffany Clark (1997-00) in earning the distinction.     2011 RAGIN ’ CAJUNS SOFTBALL Brooke Mitchell 2010 Hall of Fame Inductee Brooke Mitchell was a pitcher for the Cajuns from 2002-05 and had arguably the best season ever by a Cajuns hurler in 2004. Mitchell was named First Team NFCA All-American as well as CoSIDA Academic All- American in that season. She was also Sun Belt Conference Pitcher of the Year and Most Outstanding Player while picking up Louisiana Pitcher of the Year honors. Mitchell went 45-5 in 2004, becoming just the 12th player in NCAA history to win at least 40 games. She posted a 0.82 ERA including a school and Sun Belt record 524 strikeouts. She threw five no-hitters and posted a complete-game shutout to eliminate No.1 Arizona in NCAA Regionals. Overall in her career, Mitchell was a four-time All-Sun Belt selection and three times an NFCA All-Region performer. She was also named CoSIDA Academic All-American on two different occasions. She is also the only player in Sun Belt history to win three Pitcher of the Year awards. She finished her career with a 119-27 record while posting a 1.09 ERA and 1,309 strikeouts.
