The Student Entrepreneurial Program (StEP) will present a panel discussion led by representatives from Washington University’s student-run businesses. The discussion will cover a number of topics, including the challenge of balancing school and business responsibilities, the knowledge and skills gained from running a business, and how prospective student-entrepreneurs can get involved with a business of their own. After the presentation, we will open the floor for questions from the audience.

Common Reading Program Recap and Discussion for Parents and Families

This year’s Common Reading selection Hate Why We Should Resist It with Free Speech, Not Censorship by Nadine Strossen discusses an issue at the heart of many campuses today. As students begin their academic journeys surrounded by individuals with opposing ideas, this book addresses the slippery slope of censorship and why many institutions prioritize maintaining free speech over eliminating hate speech. Discussion of this critical subject during students’ first days at the university will set them up for the many opportunities to engage in meaningful dialogue during their time here. A faculty member who participated in Common Reading Program discussions will provide parents and families with an inside view of what transpired during the discussions with students. Please join in the conversation even if you have not had the opportunity to read the book.

On a tour of Cherokee street, you’ll see an old movie theatre, a brewery atop the natural cave system that lies beneath, and lots (and lots!) of local art.

Financial Responsibility: Starting a Conversation with Your College Student

Now is a good time to start a conversation with your student about financial responsibility. For many students, the college experience provides an opportunity to be in charge of their finances for the first time. Conversations about budgeting, building good credit, and spending responsibly are fundamental to establishing sound financial habits. Amy Kweskin, Vice Chancellor for Finance and Chief Financial Officer, will speak about the important role parents play in helping their student develop financial responsibility.
