Dozens of students have joined together to AcADeMics AlliE gRASgREEN push the University to renew the contract of News Reporter the popular language professor When University senior Priscilla Ann Mendoza heard that Spanish Instructor Je- sus Sepúlveda’s contract would not be re- newed for the 2007-08 academic year, she sAVing was shocked. As a romance languages major, Mendoza took three classes from Sepúlveda and found the instructor to be “an enormous asset to the University community.” “He is a professor that’s changed my life,” she said. The situation raises questions about the University’s commitment to maintaining in- sePÚlVeDA stitutional diversity, a core element it has re- cently targeted for improvement. In protest, Mendoza and Spanish major Laura Stull organized the “Save Sepúlveda” campaign to communicate the instructor’s in- tellectual and academic contributions to the University community. “We want to give students a voice,” Men- doza said. “It’s hard for us to comprehend how they can make a decision like this with- out input from the students. The campaign was the most constructive way to voice our opinion and mobilize the students.” For Mendoza and Stull, the uniqueness of Sepúlveda’s talent lies in his international perspective and engaging teaching style. A celebrated Chilean poet, Sepúlveda be- lieves one of the most critical components of an intellectual education is a thoughtful learning process.

The University is not planning to renew Sepúlveda’s contract, and because of this dozens of students have joined to persuade the University to keep the professor of romance languages.

stUDent liFe Vigil pays respect to Virginia Tech victims and families

lAURA FONg Freelance Reporter In honor of the 33 lives lost during the Virginia Tech shooting on April 16, Uni- versity students and com- munity members held a candlelight vigil in the Erb Me- morial Union Amphitheater on Monday night. Tea lights dotted the pho- tographs of the 33 victims that lined the bottom step of the amphitheater. Attendees quietly lit can- dles and wrote their thoughts to the victims’ friends and families on white pieces of pa- per that would later be sent to Virginia Tech. University junior and fam- ily and human services major Jory Card organized the event through a Facebook group commemorating the victims of last week’s shooting. “These people are just like us — they could be your friends, your family,” Card said to the crowd of about 60 attendees. “This is a time to be quiet with your friends and ™ honor those who were lost.” AMbER MEES | Photographer Students Callie Parks and Erin Humphrey’s candles shine bright at a tribute for lost Virginia Tech students.
